Pedrigee recalls more dog food - dogs dying
Taipei - The United States dog food maker Pedigree expanded the recall of its product from Taiwan to nine other Asian countries on Thursday after Thailand and the Philippines also reported dogs dying from kidney failure.

The expanded recall comes one day after Pedigree inspectors found mildew on two kinds of ingredients for Pedigree dry dog food in its Thailand plant.

"We ordered the Thailand plant to stop production after we began to suspect that there might be a link between dogs' kidney failure and Pedigree dry food," its Taiwan distributor Eiffem Foods Taiwan said in a statement.

The voluntary recall applies to Pedigree dry dog food, Whiskas dry cat food Pedigree Dog's Delight Ringo, Pedigree Dog's Delight Tasty Bone and Pedigree Puppy Biscuit dog treats, all made in Thailand.

The products were sold in Taiwan, South Korea, Indonesia, the Philippines, Thailand, Singapore and Vietnam. Kitekat dry sold in Thailand and Malaysia as well as Cesar Duo sold in Taiwan and South Korea are also to be withdrawn, the statement said.

10. Is that picture of chimp photoshopped?
I need to know!

And yes, that is terrible about the dog food. I love dogs, even though I own cats (or, they own me).

6. Good point, I'd bet you're right
Wonder how safe that stuff really is?
It'll either wind up at Dollar Tree or Big Lots, or it'll get used for Chicken Mcnugget or Fish n' More breading.

for them. And if you eat healthy, give your pets plenty of your table scraps. I use Innova dry food most often and Diamond. My dogs are also partial to chicken gizzards, slightly cooked.

18. I hate to say this vegan,
Edited on Thu Mar-11-04 03:50 PM by FlaGranny
because I'm just like you, I try to feed my dog the best available, but did you know that in the wild, when an animal kills it's prey they nearly always go for the yucky parts? They go for the organs and intestines before the meat. I used to have a cat that loved rats, though, and that cat ate the head first. Then she'd keep eating til she got full and I'd find the hind end of the rat by the front door.

I'm feeding NutroMax, which claims it has no byproducts and it's preserved with vitamin E.

23. I tried mightily to keep that cat inside.
I got her at about 4 months old and I think she probably was raised outside. If anyone had the door open a crack she was out. I had a young boy, so the doors got opened a lot. I tried for a while to catch her and bring her back in, but she soon got wise to that and would just run off. I finally had to give up. She was a spayed female, so she didn't go far and we lived at the end of a dead end street. I had to have her put to sleep at age 17 (about 8 years) ago for liver trouble.

Maybe a little regulation never hurt anyone, eh? Just the opposite and it protects profits, too.

16. Pet lovers beware.
THERE ARE NO PET FOOD COMPANIES THAT CHECK FOR MICROBIOLOGIC DISEASE IN ANIMALS THAT GO INTO THEIR PET FOOD. THERE ARE NO STATE OR FEDERAL REQUIREMENTS REGARDING TESTS FOR ANIMALS USED IN PET FOOD. THE RESULT IS THAT ANIMALS IN ANY HEALTH CONDITION ARE USED IN ALL PREMIUM AND REGULAR BRANDS.

Virtually All Prescription, Premium and Regular Brand Pet Foods (may) contain diseased animals, by-products (heads, guts, and allowable amounts of feces), and saturated animal fat. AFFCO allows the use of these ingredients in all meat-based pet foods.

It is widely accepted that knowledge is a powerful tool for change.

If you are concerned about the health of your pets (and aren't we all?), you should check out www.petfoodshop.com. Dr. Eric Weisman has developed the Evolution brand of pet foods for dogs, cats and ferrets. This food is the most wholesome and safe available. Do your pets a favor and check it out.

(Sorry for the caps. I copied that caption from the web site and don't have time to change it now.)

My cats are 12 years old, very healthy and lovers of Evolution.

Seattle residents and web surfers can also find it at www.vegancats.com.

17. After reading Dr. Belfields
web site, we switched our dog to only human grade meats.
If you buy chicken on sale you can boil it up in about 70-90 minutes. Costs about the same as canned dog food. If you have some extra cash buy organic to avoid the antibiotics and hormones.
Here's one of Dr. Belfields article on commercial dog food.

19. Canada BANNED importing US dog foods last year -
.
.
.

and is currently trying to go through a "certification" process to determine how food is made . .

From an article:

After a case of mad cow disease was confirmed in the U.S. in December, the federal government in Canada instituted a ban on products made with parts from ruminant animals such as sheep, goats and cattle.

That ban includes pet food, which often contains nerve tissue from these animals, a kind of tissue that is thought to hold more risk of passing on bovine spongiform encephalopathy.

22. the lesson here is to let your pets eat the naturally-occurring vermin
not to worry, they won't go hungry . . .

Observation of free-ranging domestic cats shows that some individuals can kill over 1000 wild animals per year <7>, although smaller numbers are more typical. Some of the data on kills suggest that free-ranging cats living in small towns kill an average of 14 wild animals each per year. Rural cats kill many more wild animals than do urban, or suburban cats <8>. Several studies found that up to 90% of free-ranging rural cats' diet was wild animals, and less than 10% of rural cats killed no wild animals <9>. Recent research <10> suggests that rural free-ranging domestic cats in Wisconsin may be killing between 8 and 217 million birds each year. The most reasonable estimates indicate that 39 million birds are killed in the state each year. Nationwide, rural cats probably kill over a billion small mammals and hundreds of millions of birds each year.

you know, if they wouldn't have banned ddt, these critters would already be extinct and these valiant animal companions wouldn't have such a burden trying to rid our continent of these lesser life forms.

24. My dog gets Natural Life Senior
flaxseed, table grade poultry, and glucosamine.

Just wish it weren't so expensive. Dog's arthritis is much improved after 1 8lb. sack. Vet's dog food for seniors didn't help nearly as much.
