Carla Bruni and Dave Stewart to sing two duets at Mandela Day concert
Source: Times

Carla Bruni is to give her first public performance today since becoming the First Lady of France, as part of the worldwide 91st-birthday tribute to Nelson Mandela.

The former model will sing two duets with Dave Stewart, formerly of the Eurythmics, at a star-studded concert at Radio City Music Hall in New York. The two friends, who were working on a project together before she married Nicolas Sarkozy, the French President, plan to sing her composition Quelqu’un m’a dit (Someone told me) and Bob Dylan’s Blowin’ in the Wind.

The concert is the centrepiece of a global celebration of the achievements of South Africa’s first black president — an event that organisers hope to turn into an annual Mandela Day.

Other artists scheduled to perform include Stevie Wonder, Alicia Keys, Aretha Franklin, Queen Latifah, will.i.am (of The Black Eyed Peas), Wyclef Jean, Cyndi Lauper and the Soweto Gospel Choir

1. Mandela is a heroic leader, a true revolutionary and progressive.
His refusal to surrender to the fascist apartheid authorities or apologize for waging war against them is an example of how to conduct oneself. Those who fought with their voices, their hands, their guns, their knives, in the shantytowns and in the dungeons are all heroes!

2. My cousin got to meet him.
They had an essay contest for students, then took the winners to South Africa to meet with Mandela. My cousin was one of the winners.

A very proud moment for the family.

8. Especially if you understand that South Africa is her father's homeland.
Her parents would not have met if her father hadn't refused to take up arms against fellow South Africans. He went on the so-called "chicken run" but Britain was wise to it and he wasn't allowed to join relatives in England. The only other choice was to try his mother's first cousin, my mom. Which is how he came to be in New York.

9. That must of meant a great deal to her. Where would the world be without
the example of Nelson Mandela and the change of power in South Africa to the ANC. The T & R Commission is something that will change the world I believe. More conflicts will end that way. And all because of a man named Mandela.
