'Neda' becomes rallying cry for Iranian protests
Source: CNN

"RIP NEDA, The World cries seeing your last breath, you didn't die in vain. We remember you."

That post on Twitter came from a man who identified himself as an American guitarist in Nashville, Tennessee.

Amid the hundreds of images and videos of Saturday's brutal crackdown on protesters in Iran that flooded the Internet, it was the graphic video showing the death of a young woman that touched a nerve among those following the events in Tehran for more than a week.

Like most of the information coming out of Tehran, it is impossible to verify her name, Neda, or the circumstances of her apparent death, captured close-up on a bystander's camera.

CNN ran a pixilated version of the video, which was posted on YouTube. It shows a woman in jeans and white sneakers collapsed on the street, as the person with the camera -- most likely from a cell phone -- runs toward her and focuses on her face.

1. Have been following this on CNN... Tragic. K&R.
They said that she's 16, and was watching the protests with her father when she was shot and killed. ;(

3. Shia Islam is a religion born in martyrdom
The Shias are formidable opponents when innocent blood is shed.

The Iranian government is in deep doo-doo.

RIP Neda and the other freedom fighters slain by Ahmadinejad forces.

5. Thanks for the information, my friend.
This has to be the iconic tragic story to come out of all this terrible violence. She was just a kid, and a bystander, standing there with her father, watching the protests. It couldn't be more tragic. ;(

25. In history it seems there is "one assasination bullet"
that changes the course of history

WWI
The proximate cause for the war was the June 28th, 1914 assassination of Archduke Franz Ferdinand of Austria, heir to the Austro-Hungarian throne, by a Serbian nationalist, Gavrilo Princip.

MLK
JFK
RFK

The assasination of this young woman may be just that.

Ahmadinejad and the religious rulers have made a castrophic mistake and there is no way they can step back in time.

RIP Neda and other freedom fighters!

4. LA Times: Footage of woman apparently shot in Tehran galvanizes opposition
A disturbing video showing a young woman purportedly shot in the streets of Tehran is becoming a rallying symbol for opponents of President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad.

It is one of many images and video posted on the Internet that seem to show the violence of today’s crackdown in the capital, where police and pro-government militiamen fired tear gas and water cannons at stone-throwing demonstrators protesting a disputed election.

It is not possible to verify the authenticity of these images, but they have been uploaded repeatedly on YouTube, Facebook and other sites.

A copy of the video was also emailed to The Times. It seems to show a woman lying in the street with blood spurting from her chest. A man leans over, trying to stop the bleeding with his hands.

The footage, which can be viewed on YouTube, is extremely graphic. The identity of the woman could not be independently confirmed. But she is referred to on Twitter as Neda.

"#Neda: You are the VOICE of the people. You are a call to FREEDOM.....rip," readd one of the many tweets about her apparent slaying.

CNN reports that pictures of the woman are appearing on posters in Tehran and she is being hailed as a martyr. The network broadcast an excerpt of the video with the face of the woman blurred out.

Iranian Americans also downloaded the video and used it to make posters, which were held up at a demonstration today outside the Federal Building in Westwood.

9. Still in my head this morning
30 seconds after I woke up, that video is still there. (video's since there's a second one from another cell phone)

It was horrific. She had to of been singled out because she was pretty woman. Not dressed a way a woman supposedly should. Thats all I can think. And yes wasn't a protester. But she is one now in spirit. Iran made a big mistake and it grew on the net. Local channel had a 2 second clip which I guess is alright because it shows she made it into the running clips, but if someone had just killed a woman like that, I'd rally behind and seek revenge and probably die for it.

10. Young woman with a camcorder
I think you're right, she was taken out because she was young and probably also because she was filming. If I remember right, she was standing with her father and filming some demo.
To put a stop to the documentation of what's happening must be a top priority for the regime, also by stopping them physically from filming/taking photos.

14. She was 'taken out' because she recorded events. Kristallnacht ( night of the broken cell phones)
Kristallnacht was leaked out and CNN chose that instead of her moment in history. Britain ran her death video but of course, it was so pixel scrambled its validity can easily be questioned

20. Sky News: Murdered Teen Gives Protesters Global Voice
2:46pm UK, Sunday June 21, 2009
Joe Braidwood, Sky News Online

Footage of a teenage girl dying on the street in Tehran has helped to rally anti-government protesters inside Iran and around the world.

Foreign media are banned from reporting on non-official events in Iran, where the state censors and regulates the information seen by its citizens and those abroad.

But a video clip showing a girl known as Neda, who is thought to have been no older than 16, bleeding to death while frantic attempts are made to save her life has been broadcast across the globe via the internet.

Reports from the country say the teenager had been watching Saturday's protests with her father when she was shot by Iran's militia.
