Threatening Death, US Military Kidnaps the elected President of Haiti
Edited on Mon Mar-01-04 11:58 AM by Broadslidin
This morning, during Pacifica Radio's Amy Goodman and

"Democracy Now" program,

U.S. Representative Maxine Waters reported from a phone call
received a few moments ago, President Jean-Bertrand Aristide
stated clearly, he had been kidnapped by US military forces
under a threat of death to both him and the Haitian People

http://www.democracynow.org

Representative Maxine Waters has asked that telephone calls
and e-mails be sent to senators and representatives asking
for the United Nations to step in and stop the US government
sponsored bloody coup d'etat be stopped.

Venezuela, Brazil, and all the South American sovereign nations
are viewing this US government intervention in Haiti
as a real threat to their elected governments.

I am sorry, after a quick glance, I did not see Eablair's posting.

2. Haiti coup
Sorry if this seems like a stupid question, but why?

What's the reason the US is (assuming they are, and I always assume the worst with this admininistration) overthrowing Aristide?

22. Could be US drug profiteering
Our looters (I mean, leaders) often profit off drugs, just as they do oil.

6. Aristide wasn't elected
not since 1990 at least. The 1995 and 2000 elections were roundly criticized by all international bodies as being extremely flawed to the point of being meaningless. Aristide relied on the support of the Chimeres - violent street gangs - for power, not on the ballot box.

19. Well according to Human Rights Watch.....
.....from this article,

But the initially positive reaction to the May 21 elections began to shift with news of the arrests of opposition candidates and supporters, and turned into a tide of criticism when Haitian officials refused to acknowledge that the Senate calculation method was incorrect. Focusing on the calculation issue, the United States, Canada, France, and the U.N. Security Council called on the Haitian government to revise the election results. The Caribbean Community (CARICOM) sent a high-level mediator to Haiti in early July, but to no effect.

The Senate calculation method was incorrect?
Yeah, thats a hell of a lot worse than stealing elections with touch screens or disenfranchising thousands of voters on purge lists.

I guess we need to invade Texas due to gerrymandering!

9. Obviously not, just look at Bush*, he was elected and........
......ummm, never mind! Bush* isn't just, wise or legitimately elected. He had no right to do this.

It doesn't matter how just and wise Aristide is, his administration is legitimate. What are you going to tell us next, he had aspirations of considering developing weapons of mass destruction program related activities in his rape rooms so he could gas his own people and become a threat to America?

10. No
But he did rig the 2000 election, and he kept his people in abject poverty while pocketing foreign Aid money.

16. Its good that you asked
Working hand in hand with Noriega on Haiti has been National Security Council envoy Otto Reich, who, like Noriega, is ardently opposed to Cuban leader Fidel Castro, say analysts such as Birns. Washington diplomats have seen Aristide as a leftist who is often fierce in his denunciations of the business class and slow to make recommended changes such as privatizing state-run industries.

"On a day-to-day basis, Roger Noriega (has been) making policy, but with a very strong role played by Otto Reich," Birns said.

I still maintain that Aristide was a bad ruler, but Otto Reich is nuts.
