The DayTwo probable cases of swine flu have been identified in Connecticut, Gov. M. Jodi Rell announced this afternoon.
The two cases – both involving adults who reported recent travel in Mexico – were identified in Stratford and Southbury. Both of the affected individuals are recovering and neither required hospitalization. Rell said swab samples from the two people have been sent to the federal Centers for Disease Control for further testing.
Also today, the superintendent of schools in East Haddam ordered the three schools there closed after two members of a family that had recently traveled to Cancun, Mexico, became ill. A third, younger child also became sick. The illnesses have not yet been identified.
The schools will be closed for a thorough cleaning and then be reopened.
“This may be an overabundance of caution – but caution is the word of the day,” Rell said. “We are taking every action to identify and treat swine flu cases in Connecticut. This is likely to be a long-term effort, and this illness is likely to eventually touch every state in the nation in some way. But we continue to work closely with our federal partners and others states to aggressively slow the spread of swine flu in Connecticut. The bottom line is straightforward: We are prepared."
Second School District Cancelling Classes Over Swine Flu Scare Connecticut has two probable swine flu cases that have been sent to the federal Centers for Disease Control for testing, Gov. M. Jodi Rell said Tuesday.
One is an adult in Stratford and the other is an adult in Southbury, both of whom recently traveled to Mexico. Test results are expected late Wednesday.
Concerns about swine flu also closed East Haddam schools after two students, who are siblings, recently returned from a family trip to Mexico and became ill. The students attended school Monday but not Tuesday.
One student attends the elementary school and the other goes to the middle school, according to people at the school.
Superintendent Ellen Solek says the students are showing flu-like symptoms, but they have not been diagnosed with swine flu. Tests on those children are on the way to the state lab.
Classes are also cancelled in the Wethersfield School District Wednesday because of swine flu concerns. Schools will be closed so they can been cleaned. School officials have not yet said why.
