Former KKK leader detained in Prague
Source: AP

PRAGUE (AP) -- Former Klan leader David Duke has been detained by police in the Czech Republic on suspicion of denying the Holocaust.

Duke went there at the invitation of neo-Nazis to promote the Czech translation of a book he wrote.

A police spokesman says the book includes a denial of the Holocaust.

The denial is a crime that is punishable by up to three years in Czech prisons.

8. David Dukes isn't in the United States
Countries affected so horribly by the Holocaust have a right to ban Holocaust denial. Equating the Holocaust with Global Warming is such a strawman. But, continue your strawly mocking, it's very cute.

15. Wasn't really trying to mock or be cute. Sorry if that was how I came across.
Edited on Fri Apr-24-09 04:51 PM by Dr Fate
I actually thought you were the one who was mocking, in advance, anyone who might dare to find disagreement with you or Europeans on the issue of free speech.

Sorry for the confusion in either event.

I was not equating the Holocaust with Global Warming- I was equating false, stupid, uninformed speech with false, stupid, uninformed speech. Nothing more, nothing less.

"Torture Denial" could have just as easily been my topical example.

Sure, Govts in Europe have the right to ban whatever they want- I still assumed that good people could disagree with banning certain ideas or certain speech-even when it is speech they don't like or that is flat out false.

Edited on Fri Apr-24-09 04:54 PM by Dr Fate
Then again, if WMD denial had been banned a few years back, I guess I would be in jail. At least in my case, I had the facts on my side.

I'm never comfortable with making speech or even wrong ideas a crime.

Here they are just idiots, but there, they are the seed by which the same horrors can be sown again. I cannot say I blame them, even though I disagree.

10. Conflict, Conflict -
Edited on Fri Apr-24-09 04:14 PM by haele
Couldn't happen to a nicer guy - being criminally stupid in a foriegn country.
However, I do get squeege about possible free speech violation, even in foreign countries. Not a big one for fatwas on thought crimes.
But then again, incitement speech is not free speech, and if he's doing the "heil hitler, what a great leader" number, that's no different than what Rush-bomb and his ilk are doing right now.
And that sort of speech carries a strong measure of criminal intent to incite along with it - and should be prosecuted, just as waving an unloaded gun and screaming "Don't you dare make me pay those outrageous fees!" outside a bank isn't free speech.

Haele

21. Our "free speech" isn't everyone's
Different countries see it different ways.

In the US, for example, the truth is a prime defense against libel. If I call someone a child molester and they are in fact a child molester, they can win a libel judgment against me.

In the UK, truth is not a defense against libel and you can lose a case, even if what you say is true.

I some countries, you can't make advertising claims that belittle your competitors -- which you're allowed to do in the US. In fact, in some countries, you can't even say that your product is "the best," because that implies criticism of competitors.

We are not the standard against which other people are to be measured.

A lot of countries looked at the way we do things and said "no thanks."

46. there is no conflict, he was told not to go to prague, this is a publicity stunt IMHO
duke makes a lot of $$$ going to foreign countries, posing as a senator from louisiana (which he never was), and getting funds from anti-semites (such as in syria) and from prominent neo-nazis (he had many neo-nazi supporters who kept him living in the style to which he was accustomed in russia during his time on the lam from the usa federal law)

duke is a thief who didn't pay state or federal income tax for 20 years on money he stole from supporters by spouting neo-nazi hate and then taking the money and gambling it like crazy in the casinos -- yet he ended up serving only a token sentence even though he spent three years on the run

you try not paying taxes for 20 years, you try getting garbage bags full of cash from your supporters at rallies, and then gambling that cash in public casinos where everyone sees you spending many thousands of dollars at a time -- you do that for 20 years, then when you're caught for tax evasion, you run out of the country and live in russia for 3 years and only come back when you've cut a very token short sentence deal in a min. security prison!!!!

you would never get that deal, only this guy with his knowledge of where the bodies are buried (there are lots of hidden racists in this country) could get that deal

duke has just spent A LOT Of time in syria getting money from interests fundamentally opposed to american ideals of equality and fairness, esp. promoting the anti-jewish screed he has written, he is being paid to spread hate against our allies in israel and also spreading propaganda aga. our soldiers fighting in iraq -- you may not like the war in iraq but it crosses a line when you start making out the soldier on the ground there to be a war criminal at a time when they're under a hella lot of stress to begin with

he has gotten away with much too much, and he was even warned (according to what i just read, i've not seen the guy around these parts since his jail sentence) NOT to go to prague to promote his anti-semitic book -- he had EVERY chance to back away -- instead he prefers to grab the attention of his neo-nazi buddies and keep his worthless ass in the news -- he knew the law, he just didn't fucking care

sorry for the rant, but this "person" hardly qualifies as a human being and it just gets my goat that he was allowed to walk away with SO MUCH $$$ for spreading hate

propagandists and those who spread hate, yah, put them in prison, there is no reason to be promoting the views of hitler during a time of war

Edited on Fri Apr-24-09 05:04 PM by Dr Fate
In America, the only examples I know of are "obscene" speech, "fighting words" and speech that might cause the audience to act out in "imminent" violence- also, there are truth in advertising standards as well.

I have no idea what the standards are in Eastern Europe.

Hey, it's their country, I guess.

On Edit: I forgot defamation (slander & libel)and probably something else too

55. it's more than just something he says or writes, he takes MONEY from neo nazis
he meets with them, he takes their cash to continue promoting their crap, he gambles their cash, and at no time does he pay any taxes on it

i guarantee it, the prague authorities are not just dreaming that neo-nazis were going to attend his lecture, they were going to attend his lecture and GIVE THIS FUCKTARD MONEY and he was going to probably blow it in the nearest casino the minute he got off the plane

i'm sick of this shit, i've watched him too many times blowing a fucking fortune, he needs to learn what it's like to work for a living -- why do the rest of us who are honest have to pay taxes and he can fuck all do as he pleases?

he should not be allowed to profit and live high on the hog selling hate, when the rest of us are struggling

our federal authorities didn't have the gonads to charge and convict him for what he did, they got him on a token charge and a token sentence, so if he gets more of what is coming to him over there, fine it's only about 25 or 30 years too late if you ask me!

let me ask you this-- if YOU had been on the run from the feds for 3 years in russia taking money from neo-nazis, what deal would the FBI cut YOU to allow you to return to america and then to later continue to travel all over the world on an american passport? because i hate to tell you, you would NEVER, EVER get that deal

it's BECAUSE he is the face of hate that he has gotten away with so much over the years, there is a lot of hidden hate and racism in this country -- well, my guess is, there is NO ONE in the czech republic where he can say, "hey, if you arrest me, i'll tell that you were at my klan meeting" or "i'll say your daddy was a so-and-so in the klan with me"

ha!

44. You'd think he'd know enough to stay away from countries where they REMEMBER Nazism.
And especially from "the former Czechoslovakia".

They get a mite tetchy about swastikas in those parts.

two different ministers -- interior minister, and human rights and minorities minister spoke out prior to his arrival (per the news reports)

i know for a fact that he has received lots of cash from neo-nazis in eastern europe, for instance, years ago i was in a casino when he returned from a meeting with neo-nazis in russia and i guess all that russian neo-nazi $$$ was burning a hole in his pocket, because you never saw a guy fly in the door of the casino so fast

my guess is that the prague police are correct and he wasn't just there to give a speech, he was there to solicit donations from neo-nazis, keep in mind, this dude is over 50 and has never, ever held a job, he gets it all as "gifts" from other nazis (and in america of course he used to also get "campaign donations" which he stole and gambled away, from the usual dumb ass rednecks and racists) -- i have seen him gambling thousands, pretty good for a dude who has never bothered to hold a job

51. Given how violent those types are, why isn't Duke nervous
about it getting back to the would-be reichmarshals that he's gambling their donations away?

I'm pretty sure they'd respond to misappropriation of funds in a fairly, shall we say, DIRECT manner.

Edited on Fri Apr-24-09 08:17 PM by pitohui
you get this w. any con artist, but the folks i know who have been to the rallies and david duke barbecues and have described the bags full of cash donations to me, are not the same people who to the casinos and watch him party down with those same bags full of cash (which didn't need to be described to me, as i have many times observed it myself)

a lot of rednecks are just stupid and never figured it out that their "donations" got thrown away, the rest i guess felt like idiots as it became obvious over the years that he was living as a rich man in mandeville (a rich area) yet never held any job or won any office since moving there, he is considered to be "tacky" and the local republicans were even looking for ways for blocking him having access to republican party funds -- they knew he would steal them under the guise of running for office

as far as the russians, i think they just never got a clue that the money went straight to casino magic, i used to wonder about that myself -- at some point, the fact that most neo-nazis probably can't easily travel to america has insulated duke from these guys finding out where the money actually went

he is a con artist first and foremost and although i find him repellent, he can apparently charm the right person

the only reason he went to jail at all, for any time, is his girlfriend finally had enough of him fucking around with all the other "good christian" neo-nazi supporters -- her testimony was finally enough to kick the fbi off their ass

i mean, every gambler in two states knew who he was and how high he gambled and how badly he played -- he was not one of your quiet, suffer in silence losers

67. Czech-mate, asshole!

I was in Prague last June. Wonderful city. As a Fundamentalist Atheist, I really appreciate the statistic that the Czech Republic is "the most atheistic country in Europe."

Some posters in here are right--the Czechs still have very bitter feelings about the Nazi occupation of their country from 1938-45. I can understand why they clamp down on neo-Nazis like Dave Dookey.

History Geeks may remember that Prague was ruled by a guy who even Adolf Hitler called "the man without a heart"--Reinhard Heydrich, leader of the 1942 Wannsee Conference which summarized Jewish populations around the world (even in the US) and discussed how to kill them.

Heydrich was arrogant enough to cruise around Prague in an open Mercedes convertible. His daily commute was interrupted one morning when a hand grenade joined him for the ride, courtesy of the Czech Underground.

Several Czechs told me about the famous statue of Jan Huss in Old Town Square. During the Nazi occupation it was covered with swastika banners. During the 1968 occupa..., er, the occasion when Moscow extended fraternal socialist greetings to Prague by riding into the city on tanks...the Communists draped the Huss statue in black cloth.

Those were the usual futile attempts to make people forget the power of the individual human mind. Huss, you may recall, almost kicked off the Protestant Reformation a century before Martin Luther. After being invited to a meeting with the Pope, under a guarantee of safe passage, Huss was naturally burned at the stake.

And if you visit Prague, do not miss the Museum of Communism. Located beside a gambling casino, and above a McDonald's. Just in case you wondered how that whole "historical inevitability" thing turned out...

we in America tolerate free speech, which I defended as a young man in the military. However, the dumb son of a bitch is in a foriegn country, no longer afforded the defense of the US constitution, which there does not seem to be much left after the Bush regime. Fuck the racist arrogant bastard, I hope he enjoys those big Czech cocks up his ass. You are defending an arrogant idiot rascist motherfucking jack ass who would love to shut down our freedoms here in America for his one sided beliefs. So he is getting a taste of his own medicine, if he had his way here this is the night mare we would all be living. Got a come back to that?

87. "...the ZIONISTS come after?"

So now it was the usual Mossad conspiracy.

But these clowns are always remarkably silent about a certain earlier conspiracy by a different foreign government:

At the outbreak of World War II, over 92,000 Jews lived in Prague, almost 20 percent of the city’s population. Prague was one of the largest Jewish communities in Europe.

At least two-thirds of the Jewish population of Prague perished in the Holocaust.
