NBC rejects anti-abortion Super Bowl ad
Source: UPI

WASHINGTON, Jan. 30 (UPI) -- A Chicago-based Catholic organization says NBC-TV won't air an anti-abortion video during Sunday's Super Bowl that portrays President Obama as an unborn child.

The spot has had more than 700,000 hits on YouTube since CatholicVote.org, a subsidiary of Fidelis, ran it on its Web site, The Washington Times reported Friday.

Brian Burch, president of Fidelis, said NBC originally responded to the group's desire to run the spot with a proposal for a package costing $1.5 million to $1.8 million.

Burch says after his members pledged "significant dollars" for the project, NBC changed its mind.

Called "Imagine Spot 1," the ad opens with an ultrasound of a child in utero set to violin music.

1. Notice that NBC was originally strongly considering it.
Before you praise them for eventually seeing reason.

20. I don't know
Something about this whole bit doesn't sit right - I think it's the part where they talk about all the money they raised, based on airing this thing... It makes me wonder just how strong a commitment they had from NBC to begin with, and whether the *idea* of this was enough to hang a fundraising campaign on.

OMG! If Obama had been aborted, we wouldn't have a president right now!
It would be anarchy! Anarchy, I say!

2. If they did one with Bush as an embryo

3. Since the church is trying to force its dogma into civil law
it is absolutely begging to be taxed as a political organization.

It's time for them to get a visit from the tax man, the only person in the world who can possibly explain the difference between church and state to them.

4. I think they should run it
take 3 million bucks from these yahoos and run the ad. People should have to put up 50% of the cash before they can submit an ad for the Super Bowl, then we'd see who really has an ad for the game.

They had no plans to actually pay for the ad, just like PETA they were hoping to get a shitload of publicity and generate youtube hits.

It worked, just as they planned.

5. Those "congratulations, you just aborted J.S. Bach" kind of arguments drive me up the freaking wall.
My ideal argument would be: "This fetus will be born to an ambitious father and doting mother, and as a child will be a good student and deeply religious. He will grow up to inspire thousands and his name will be remembered for decades. Should his would-be mother have an abortion? NO? REALLY? Well, you just let Hitler be born!!!! BWAAHAHHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAAAAAAA!"

But I'm too grown up to get into that.

7. That argument was made years ago, by Paul Harvey, believe it or not.
Edited on Fri Jan-30-09 11:45 AM by Aristus
I used to read his collections of "The Rest of The Story" broadcasts, before I found out what a right-wing tool he is. This particular one, on abortion, did not seem to take sides. It simply offered two scenarios to the reader, as the potential abortionist. And concluded by stating the two historical personages if you proceeded with both abortions: Leonardo Da Vinci and Adolf Hitler. The language he used was actually abortion-neutral. He says "You would have denied the world Leonardo Da Vinci, and spared the world Adolf Hitler."

He must have been having a good day when he wrote that...

On edit: BTW, everything I've read about Hitler as a boy states that he was actually a poor student, and a bully, too.

11. EXACTLY
why not put as much effort into feeding hungry children. Plenty of homeless kids out there.

13. it's because they are Paulists and not Christians
that is the big difference between true christians who follow the teachings and words of Jesus and those who follow the bullying rhetoric of Paul.

Feed the hungry? Clothe the naked? Shelter the homeless? And ask for nothing in return from them--like forcing them to be indoctrinated into their narrow, intolerant mindset? There is no profit in doing that.

17. There needs to be more public education about the difference between those two.
The true Christians should do their utmost to step away from the Paulists and their teachings, and let the world know they are not the same thing..

14. Just what I was thinking
but this subset of Catholics is only about abortion and gay marriage, nothing more nothing less. This group is part of a larger movement in the US that is trying to recruit fundie evangelicals because they agree on abortion and gay marriage and kick everyone else out (e.g. long term Catholics from birth). New zealots are what they want, not long term moderates and liberals.

15. I always said PETA and the anti-abortion groups are basically the same
Turns out I was right. They both want their own view of morality pushed on everyone else and they both use the exact same tactics.

18. I vote for Fidelis to care for and pay for all unwanted children
All these anti-abortion groups are desperate to keep fetuses alive but then they care nothing about the life of it once it's born.

19. Why am I betting
that NBC never agreed to take it, but that this group used that potential as a platform for fundraising?

Think those bucks are going back to their donors? I don't.
