Rockets hit Israel from Lebanon

At least three rockets have been fired into northern Israel from Lebanon raising fears that the current Israeli offensive in Gaza may spill over.

Israel's army said it had returned fire into Lebanon. There are no details.

The exchange came as Israel reportedly launched 60 air strikes on the Gaza Strip overnight, targeting facilities used by the Hamas group.

The BBC's Mike Sergeant in Jerusalem says this is a very dangerous moment in Israel's conflict.

The fear in the past few days has been that the violence in Gaza could spread to northern Israel and the Lebanese border area, he said.

2. WaPo is reporting that Bush is arriving in Israel today
The rockets crashed down on a road in the western Galilee town of Shlomi, said police spokesman Mickey Rosenfeld, the day before President Bush is scheduled to arrive in Israel in an attempt to invigorate peace talks between Israeli and Palestinian leaders.

12. Are you sure that's current? I swear it reads like it is but it says 1/9/2008 on it.
I would much rather that it was the wrong story than that the Bush-beast really was slouching toward Bethlehem.

13. That indeed is last year
Edited on Thu Jan-08-09 02:55 AM by Alamuti Lotus
Although the details are practically the same as now... small number of rockets fall on a settlement in northern Palestine (Nahariya this time, Schlomi last year) after a series of deadly Israeli raids on Gaza -- easy mistake to make! I didn't catch that until just now myself. The only difference is that the idiot in chief is nowhere to be seen now.

23. Israel is likely trying to draw Iran into a broader conflict via Lebanon.
Apprently, bombing Palestinian women and children in schools is not enough. Hezbollah in South Lebanon are supported and supplied by Iran.

All of this before Obama is inaugurated and reason restored.

15. Could be - they're neither confirming nor denying
Hizbullah's television station Al-Manar reported the Katyusha attack at northern Israel, but did not attribute the fire to the Shia movement.

Israeli Military sources suspect the attack was carried out by a Palestinian organization and not by Hizbullah, in light of the type of rockets used.

In an interview with Al-Jazeera, a leader of the PFLP General Command in Lebanon, Anwar Raja, neither confirmed nor denied that his organization carried out the attack.

Hamas spokesman in Lebanon Ra’fat Murra denied that his movement was responsible for the rocket attack.

(sorry about the mangling of characters in the Hamas spokesman's name - incompatible codepages - what can you do?)

16. Rockets Fired From Lebanon Into Israel’s North
Rockets Fired From Lebanon Into Israel’s North
By STEVEN ERLANGER
Published: January 8, 2009
JERUSALEM — Israel’s conflict with Hamas in Gaza threatened to broaden on Thursday as at least three rockets were fired into the north of Israel from Lebanon.

The rockets, presumably launched in support of Hamas, could presage the opening of a second front. The Israeli Army, in a brief statement, said it “responded with fire against the source of the rockets,” which landed near the town of Nahariya. Two Israelis were slightly wounded, the police said.

Lebanese security sources told Reuters that they believed it was unlikely that the rockets were fired under instructions from the militant group Hezbollah. But there was no confirmation or denial from Hezbollah itself.

In 2006, after the kidnapping of an Israeli soldier just outside Gaza, a large Israeli operation there was overshadowed by Israeli’s massive response to an attack in the north by Hezbollah, which turned into what is known as the Second Lebanon War.

On Wednesday, Israel had said that it would send senior officials to talk with Egypt about halting the conflict in Gaza, but there were no immediate signs of a diplomatic breakthrough, and fighting between Israel and Hamas militants continued after a three-hour lull for humanitarian aid to be distributed.

24. I wish I could find the article but
last week I saw an article where some people in Lebanon close to the Israeli border found several rockets pointed toward Israel. They knew they didn't plant them and tried to disable them. They figured it was going to be used as a false flag operation. I wonder if these are the same rockets? I will have to look for that article.
