MONROE, La. (KNOE 8) - "Jena Six" defendant Mychal Bell was hospitalized Monday night after he reportedly shot himself in the chest with a .22 caliber pistol.

KNOE 8 News confirmed that Bell is hospitalized at LSU Conway Medical Center. A Monroe police supervisor says the wound is "not life threatening."

The shooting reportedly happened at the Monroe foster home where Bell has lived since his release from jail in connection with the 2006 beating of a white student at Jena High School.

The shooting happened after KNOE 8 News at Six aired details of Bell's Christmas Eve shoplifting arrest in a Monroe store.
