1. Before I knew who Felt was, Hal Holbrook WAS Felt, his voice
coming from the shadows of a Washington, DC parking garage, urging Woodward to "follow the money."

15. I finally saw it about a year ago, LOL.
It was a terrific movie, I agree. Love learning the back story on history... Wish I'd seen it sooner... :-)

And a belated welcome to DU from me, too! We're glad to have you with us, iandhr! :toast:

2. Mark Felt was one of the few true heroes of our time.
He'd have been killed if his identity had been discovered back in the day.

I'd express the hope that we'll have more like him in the future, but I think the greater honor we could pay to his memory would be to make this a country where we no longer need people to do things like that.

3. He was a hero on Watergate but
there were some controversial aspects to what he did at FBI that resulted in him getting indicted.

4. True. Still, in those dark days of the early 70's, Felt may have saved us from fascism
And if it's a violation of Godwin's Law to say that, I don't freakin' care.

In this case, I think the good the man did far outweighed the bad.

SAN FRANCISCO – W. Mark Felt, the former FBI second-in-command who revealed himself as "Deep Throat" 30 years after he tipped off reporters to the Watergate scandal that toppled a president, has died. He was 95.

Felt died Thursday in Santa Rosa after suffering from congestive heart failure for several months, said family friend John D. O'Connor, who wrote the 2005 Vanity Fair article uncovering Felt's secret.

Godspeed, Mr Felt! You served your country well and it's just too bad that there aren't more like you running around today.

10. OMG! That's really too bad...
He did live a long life, but he's also a very important part of our history. Very sad and I echo your wishes... K&R. :-(

11. Does Woodward have any credibility after his dubious Plame "confession"?
I have major doubts that Felt was DT. Poppy was right there with means, motive & opportunity. Then Woodward goes to bat for Cheney.

I detect a pattern.

12. Just heard this on the radio
and popped in here to get the reaction...

R.I.P. to one of the most famous whistle-blowers of an era.

It's so surreal that with the deaths of people like Weyrich and now Felt, and the impending inauguration of Obama in 31 days, it literally feels like change is finally sweeping through - scouring out a 40+ year period of turmoil and ushering in a new way. Let's hope we can seize this time to move the country in a new, more positive and inclusive direction as we stand at the brink of the collapse of such a divisive period in history.

13. Mika on Morning Joe referred to him as "the infamous informant"
Felt was a real SOB for his role in Cointel-Pro (Reagan immediately pardoned him once in office) but he was far from "infamous" for his role in Watergate.

14. He was obviously murdered.
A 95 year old man doesn't suddenly drop dead.
