Obama effigy found on UK's campus

University of Kentucky police are investigating who hung an effigy believed to be Democrat Sen. Barack Obama from a tree on the Lexington campus Wednesday morning.

UK President Lee Todd, after a press conference Wednesday, said that UK police have notified federal authorities of the incident. Todd said a professor saw the effigy on the tree near the Rose Street parking garage across from the Mining and Minerals building this morning and called police. The professor then sent Todd an email notifying him of the incident.

2. While the situation is sad, I am also sad to say that in a way this is funny..
Not the fact of what happened, but the fact that the racist GOP is so scared of a loosing "white rule" in the White House. I overheard an idiot the other day in the grocery store line say that she had heard, and I quote "Did you know that OSAMA is planning on painting the White House black to honor his heritage". I let this !@$hole have it with both barrels to the point that she was crying when she left the grocery store, and everyone in line behind me was applauding me, and offering to buy my groceries. Honestly, where in the world do they come up with this C@#P????? :banghead:

4. I'm Disgusted
I cannot believe that anyone can condone this type of behavior. Whether it's Obama or Palin being hung in effigy, it shows how far we've come in our political debate. We no longer embrace honest, respectful debate. We no longer agree to disagree. This country has split in two and the gulf is widening. There seems to be no moderate voice out there any longer. We hear from the extremists almost exclusively. Is it the ratings-pumping value of hate and fear sound bites that convince the networks to only air the extremist viewpoints? I know a LOT of people who are sick to death of this kind of divisiveness.

And this is why I support Obama. His call to ALL Americans to come together is genuine. He was the first to denounce attacking Palin's family, stating that families are off-limits in campaigns. He could take the cheap shots, but he doesn't. He addresses the policies, records and actions of his political opponents, not their families, their race, their gender or their religion.

Obama has shown incredible grace, poise and intelligence during this campaign. When I think of Barak Obama at the helm of our Nation, I feel more pride and confidence in our future than I have in the last 8 years. I hope one day that we will be able to look back and realize that the era of partisan politics, or in-fighting for supremacy of one party over the good of the Nation was one of our darkest periods. We do not need an 'us-against-them' attitude in this country. Obama is right, there are patriots who supported the war in Iraq and patriots who opposed it. There are good, decent Americans in all areas of this country and no State, City, Township or Commonwealth that can claim to be 'The Heartland of America'. We are ALL of us, every one, Americans. Like a family, we have relatives we disagree with, we have our differences. But we need a President who will remind us that we are all one people, without concern for race, religion, gender, age, sexual orientation, economic status, or any other manner by which we measure one against another.

Barak is not the leading candidate in this race as far as I can see. He is the ONLY candidate.

9. It is being investigated by Federal Authorities
Thank God. This is so horrible, but this is my Alma Mater and I know that they have been working very hard on diversity, it is one of the main goals of the university right now. So not only has this little turd gotten himself into seriously hot water, but he gets the university labeled as just a southern, hick, hate-filled school. I am very angry! I know there are droves of Obama supporters on the UK campus, if the bumper stickers around campus are any indication.

This breaks my heart for the minority kids on campus. They must be wondering if the white guy in class next to them is really what he seems right now. The person who did this has hurt a lot of people.

Edited on Wed Oct-29-08 12:11 PM by CherokeeDem
I am a graduate of UK and live in Lexington and this is simply uncalled for. While KY may be a red state, where there are a lot of very conservative Democrats...UK has always had a very liberal bent. I mean during the Vietnam war when I was there, we had protests rallies...had William Kunstler and other radicals come to campus...we even had a building set on fire to protest the way police were treating the protesters (I had nothing to do with that!!!), that was done after the police teargassed a gathering at the Student Center that afternoon (yes...I did get teargassed...not fun).

My apologies to all for this behavior on UK's campus. It is simply horrid.

10. that's my opinion also
here on campus, I've never seen race as an issue. Granted, I'm not a student, but overall the campus and the community surrounding it are diverse and accepting....maybe I live in a bubble of wishful thinking but the incident shocked many here....

...family (the part not in Ca.) is in Kentucky. If there's one thing we Dems stand for it's to not stereotype and disrespect all for something done by a few.

It IS horrid behavior. And it's just one more reason...for me...why the country needs Barack Obama as President. It's time to educate and change this country...and we will. From one Cherokee Democrat to another. ;)

19. Well...I Am Extremely Embarassed...
Did you email the mayor of West Hollywood and urge he apologize to all for the behavior of the person who hung Governor Palin's effigy? Maybe you wrote an email to the city council in West Hollywood? Or protested somewhere to show how extremely embarassed you were to see a sitting governor have such a horrid display of violence?

Maybe it really is free speech and we should not be so embarassed? So tell me, CherokeeDem, what is it? Why are you vocal about one effigy and silent about the other?

29. Actually, I Heard About That but...
did not hear where it happened. Had I had a personal interest in the community I would have been vocal. As it was, I was, as thousands of others were, disgusted by it. Listen you peice of work, unlike some of your comrades, if a Democrat is against an injustice, we are against that injustice regardless of who is involved, even if it was the likes of you.
