Mubarak warns of increased anti-US attacks in Iraq
CAIRO (AFP) - Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak (news - web sites) warned of increased armed attacks against coalition forces in Iraq (news - web sites) if the United States did not stabilize the situation and hand power over to Iraqis swiftly.

"If the Americans do not quickly redress the situation, there will be big problems, terrorist operations and gang wars will increase," Mubarak, an Arab leader close to the United States, told a meeting of students in Alexandria on Saturday.

"A timeline must be drawn up for a government and elections, otherwise the (chaotic) situation will persist in Iraq ... violence will increase," he said.

2. What an insightful fortuneteller

This pet dictator let those "coalition forces" through Egypt's Suez Canal in the first place, all of the posturing after the fact means nothing.

3. Excellent point
Mubarak is dependent on his military and his military is dependent on the American regime. Therefore he could not refuse Suez passage or his government could eventually fail from a loss of his own military's support.

Now he is on the horns of a dilemna. He must be seen to support the "Arab" cause or lose political legitimacy, yet at the same time he has no sovereignty. American attrition followed by an American standown, or withdrawal will undermine the stability of his own dictatorial regime. The neocons must facilitate Iraqi self determination quickly, abandon colonial objectives, declare victory and leave. This is of course isn't going to happen. The neocons are going to have it their way, they think, no matter how long it takes. They are going to fight to the last drop of someone else's blood. The undue protraction of the conflict and its colonial objectives undermine Mubaraks legitimacy and prestige in the Arab world day by day as he stands by and urges the Americans to impose order more decisively on an unwilling and uncooperative people.
