Obama Broke Money Record
Source: The Trail (Washington Post)

Sen. Barack Obama broke his monthly fundraising record of $55 million in August, sources said today, but the campaign remains tight lipped about its total haul.

The numbers aren't scheduled to be made public until Sept. 20, when the campaign files its August finance reports with the Federal Election Commission. But top fundraisers for the campaign wanted to downplay a report in today's New York Times suggesting Obama's vaunted money-raising team has been struggling to meet its goals.

Se. John McCain's campaign already released its August totals, announcing he raised $47 million -- by far his best fundraising month to date.

The real test of the campaign's decision to forgo public funds will come in October, top Obama fundraisers said today. That's when the campaign is banking on a surge in online donations, they said, noting that more than 2 million donors have given to the campaign, and most have the capacity to give more.

But the McCain camp has already made clear it plans to challenge any advantage Obama will have gained by forgoing federal funds. They will rely heavily on the Republican National Committee, which is expected to raise significantly more than its Democratic counterpart. The RNC's top fundraisers have said they hope to raise $100 million in September and October to help offset or even erase Obama's potential financial edge.

5. We don't know what Obama raised in August. In response to a concern troll type of article in the
NYT yesterday, the Obama camp simply said that August was their best month yet - which means it beat last February's record of $55 million.

9. Thank you! I will give about 100 (I make under 15 a year) to add to my 50 from last month.
I know how incredibly important this 4 years is, it's honestly 2x more important than 04 b/c there's so much bad ecological data... let alone economic hardship!

Will O be at risk of running out of money at the end, if donors are maxed out by then?

24. My hunch is no.
Many small donors like me will keep giving but won't come close to maxing out.

26. I am a small donor....
I'll be scrimping but I will be giving every payday til the election.

What does this say when a candidate can get this much via internet from middle class folks.

I know money is tight but if you don't have money give time. They need both.

12. Wait a minute!
I thought all was doom and gloom, Obama was tanking in the polls, the donations were gonna be down, he and Joe had to watch what they say at every given moment and all is lost.

At least, that's what I read on DU.

A while back Macbush website bloggers were getting points for posting repub talking points on our blogs. When it first started they kept posting on obama blog site. They want us to panic and worry.Don't let them get under you skin.

14. If Obama is so flush with cash, where the hell are his TV ads?
Edited on Tue Sep-09-08 11:33 PM by tom_paine
I have seen the McCain "take away the celebrity and what do you have?" ad almost a dozen times and not a single Obama ad, not even the old squishy ineffective kind.

If Obama has a significant cash advantage, you couldn't tell it from the PA TV commericals.

Looking at that, one would think the Obama campaign too impoverished to buy airtime...

22. Obama is running very good ads in Ohio--so keep those donations coming
Obama was running introductory ads a few months ago about him graduating and then helping unemployed steelworkers in the Chicago area.

The Obama campaign is now running radio ads about McCain's agenda to ban abortion in the cases of rape or incest. There have been TV ads about the recent subjects like how many homes does McCain have and mocking Phil Gramm who called Americans "whiney"
