Sarah Palin fumbles on Fannie, Freddie
Edited on Mon Sep-08-08 12:32 PM by RamboLiberal
Source: Chicago Tribune

Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin stumbled this weekend when she commented on the federal takeover of mortgage giants Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac. The Huffington Post "helpfully" pointed out her mistake to anyone who missed it the first time around.

Speaking before voters in Colorado Springs, the Republican vice presidential nominee claimed that lending giants Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac had "gotten too big and too expensive to the taxpayers." The companies, as McClatchy reported, "aren't taxpayer funded but operate as private companies. The takeover may result in a taxpayer bailout during reorganization."

Economists and analysts pounced on the misstatement, saying it demonstrated a lack of understanding about one of the key economic issues likely to face the next administration.

"You would like to think that someone who is going to be vice president and conceivable president would know what Fannie and Freddie do," said Dean Baker, co-director of the Center for Economic and Policy Research. "These are huge institutions and they are absolutely central to our country's mortgage debt. To not have a clue what they do doesn't speak well for her, I'd say."

Added Andrew Jakabovics, an economic analysts for the progressive think tank, Center for American Progress: "It is somewhat nonsensical because up until yesterday there was sort of no public funding there. Even today they haven't drawn down any of the credit line they have given to Treasury. 'Gotten too big and too expensive' are two separate things. The too big has been a conservative mantra for a while and there is something to be said of that in that they hold about half of the mortgage guarantees that are out there. And in the last year they have been responsible for roughly 80 percent out there. The 'too expensive to tax payers,' I don't know where that comes from."

As Ed Schultz said, she doesn't know her ass from third base! Big fumble! But I haven't heard any MSM hop on this. But then the dumbass MSM probably don't know as well.

Bet Biden could give a whole dissertation on Freddie and Fannie and the problems.

Where none was intended.

The average Republican voter didn't give a damn that George Bush can't say "new-clee-er," didn't give a damn that he has, as my lower-middle class mom put it, "horrible grammar and English." They didn't care he was incompetent. All that mattered was that he got one over on Al Gore and then John Kerry, so they could get one over on average Democrats.

because I totally agree with you. For myself, I'm pretty angry these days, and with the ever-available temptation to get self-righteous, I have to constantly check myself. At work today I got pretty loud in trashing Palin and the types that either buy the GOP's phoniness or play along with it. Nearby was a self-professed independent who a few days ago that she kind of liked Palin's 'story.' That woman didn't look at me the rest of the workday. Whether she's an idiot or indifferent, I don't know, but I know that she is registered to vote and will. Just hope I didn't turn her off. CHECK!

Today, the elderly fellow tunning for our District came to my door. He wants my vote. I asked him who he was going to vote for. He said he didn't know and wanted to hear what they all had to say. I asked him if he was a Dem or Repub and of course as a hiding Repub more likely said "Independent". I said I wanted "his" vote. and "his promise" that my grandmother didn't flee Poland for nothing. I then told him what I knew and his eyes widened. He said "Why don't we hear any of this????? I am sure it will come out at some point". DUH. Just who is addressing this in Obama's Campaign? This is where they are out of touch. The media is not going to do it.

142. Thank you....
what you did is what we need. All of us need to talk it up. Don't let the media run this election.

I was getting out of my car today and there was one of those new VW bugs next to me. A young woman was getting out of it. I asked her how she liked her car and she said she loved it. I told her I had one of the originals back in the '60's and she said, "I'll bet it was cheap to run back then." She said something about it costing $50.00 to fill it up and I just said, "Well, remember that when you go to the polls in November and make sure you don't vote for another 4 years of it with McCain." She said, "You got that right."

She may have already been onboard, but I am going to open my big mouth to everyone until November.

144. But the masses listen to 'buzz'!
Edited on Mon Sep-08-08 07:52 PM by Tallison
That hard-to-define quality of media favor or disfavor that travels by, "Yeah, well, I heard..." It takes an accumulation of gaffes or small victories to generate this. While Palin's on a novelty high following her debut, the media is fickle and loves a plot twist.

Palin is so profoundly uninformed, no degree of preparation will save her from herself in the long run. Negative buzz WILL develop. The $24,000 question is whether it will take place before or after the election.

One day, some day, the media is going to CRUCIFY this woman's hubris.

I'm not in government but by just reading the local paper I knew that Fannie and Freddie were private entities. Lets see her answer pertinent questions instead of pushing more MOOSEPOOP. (I got that great noun from an earlier poster, Chris Weigant.)

They're spinning the fact that she's not going off on her own to campaign because she's so popular McCain wants her around to draw crowds, instead of flies, which what he's been doing, but it probably has more to do with the fear of things like this happening.

Like they used to do when Ronnie RayGun went off message; 'John, stop him, he's talking!'

75. Why they MUST care...
I couldn't agree more!

However, the kicker the right is going to throw back is that their opposition: 'If smart people didn't speak down to "not so smart people" would we learn a thing or two?'

We learned from W that criticizing his (lack of) intellect only solidified his base. The base needs to be peeled off by pointing out her record: way-way-way-out of the mainstream on abortion; ethics questions; addiction to earmarks; in the pockets of big oil; and on and on: http://www.truthout.org/article/palin-faces-laundry-list-complications

Nothing that she said in the last weeks tells me how I can afford heating oil this winter or how my family can afford healthy food or adequate health insurance coverage or tells me how my neighbor won't lose his house any other pressing issues that effect the large majority of families in this country.

March 10, 2003

"What are Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac, and what do they do?"

Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac are "government-sponsored enterprises" (GSEs). This means that they are privately owned, but receive support from the Federal Government, and assume some public responsibilities.

The GSEs provide a secondary market in home mortgages, purchasing mortgages from the lenders who originate them. They hold some of these mortgages, and some are "securitized" -- sold in the form of securities which the GSEs guarantee.

The two GSEs today are among the largest corporations in the world.

What mortgages do the GSEs purchase?

"Conforming mortgages" as they are called consists of all home mortgages that meet the underwriting requirements of the agencies, and are no larger than the largest loan the GSEs are allowed by law to purchase. In 2003 the maximum was $322,700. It is raised every year in line with increases in home prices. The mortgages the GSEs can purchase account for roughly 80% of the conventional (non-FHA/VA) home loan market.

What kind of support do the GSEs receive from Government?

The major support consists of the credit lines with the US Treasury. This, along with their histories -- both were public institutions before they became privately owned -- mark them as having a special claim for Government assistance in the event they ever get into financial trouble. As a result, investors consider the notes they issue and the mortgage securities they guarantee almost as good as securities issued by the Federal Government itself.

Do the GSEs have competitors?

Not in the conforming loan market. Because of their Government backing, the GSEs can sell notes and securities at a lower yield than any strictly private secondary market firm. This gives them a monopoly -- or rather a duopoly, since there are two of them -- in the market in which they operate.

The GSEs do have emulators, however, in the non-conforming market. While the cast of players changes, at any one time there are usually 15 or more strictly private firms that purchase non-conforming loans and securitize them in much the same way as the GSEs.

"Why do two private firms receive Government support, while the others don’t?"

The Government did not select the two firms for special treatment. Both the GSEs began as Government entities, and the major objective in privatizing them (while retaining Government support) was to encourage development of a private secondary market. The other firms arose later, based on the GSE model, so that objective was achieved.

If the objective was achieved, why do the GSEs continue to receive special support?

The GSEs are unwilling to give it up, and they have become so powerful politically that they have managed to thwart the several attempts that have been made to take it away.

Do I have anything at stake in this issue?

If you are a potential borrower eligible for a conforming loan, your interest rate will probably be about 1/4% lower than it would be absent the GSEs. This reflects their relatively low funding costs, part of which is passed through to borrowers.

In addition, if you are a low or low-to-moderate income borrower, and/or reside in an underserved area, you might find a loan through a GSE. As part of their public responsibility, the GSEs commit to purchase specified numbers of such loans. How many would not be made without the GSEs, however, is not clear.

As a taxpayer, on the other hand, you have a cause for concern. The low borrowing costs of the GSEs is based on implicit Government backing for their $3+ trillion of debt and guarantees. If the GSEs ever have a financial disaster, the Government will have to bail them out and you and I will be on the hook for the cost.

"Is anybody regulating the GSEs to prevent such a disaster?"

A few years ago Congress gave that responsibility to the Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD). Very few informed observers believe that HUD is up to the task.

"Is there a way to eliminate the risk of a financial disaster by removing Government support without hurting investors who rely on that support?"

It could be done by 1) revoking the credit line the GSEs now have with the Treasury, and b) providing an explicit Federal guarantee of all debt and GSE guarantees outstanding on the date the credit line is revoked. An explicit guarantee on the old claims would prevent any repercussions in the financial markets, yet put the markets on notice that news ones are not guaranteed. Over time, the volume of guaranteed claims would gradually decline.

Edited on Mon Sep-08-08 01:32 PM by Julius Civitatus
I'm sorry to say, but this will make no difference at all with the vast majority of her Republican followers. Zilch. Nada.

It is clear that she's unfit for the VP office, and unable to grasp any serious issues in a serious manner. It is clear that this is one of the main reasons why she won't talk to the press, because she doesn't know squat, and it shows. It doesn't matter: what matters to her supporters is that she's an uber-Christian zealot with an axe to grind, and that she's perceived as "tough" and "folksy", someone they would like to "have a beer" with.

Have we not learned anything from 8 years of George W Bush and the hordes of Republican zealots that laughed at every single one of his gaffes, but went ga-ga when he talked Jesus?

Wake up, folks. This is what we are up against. She can say the sky is green, and won't matter, as long as she keeps bringing Jesus and threatens to "clean up D.C." I know; it is absurd, but this is what we are up against.

We better get out the vote, en-masse. Just my two cents.

59. I'll make a guess at where it comes from. McCain (like Bush) is about...
...privatizing everything. He (like Bush) derides big government institutions (FEMA, UN, Nato, Soc. Security, public schools, etc.) . He promotes the 'ownership society' as a smokescreen to get rid of these things because his basic philosophy is that they cost the government money and are not worth it. It's like when Bush has said he'll give tax cuts because "It's your money." But he intends to cut services (like with FEMA). But, remember, McCain says he doesn't know much about the economy...which is probably why he is continuing Bush policies. He's not smart enough to do anything new on his own.

I think he has shared his thoughts with Palin. Maybe talked about how all these things are expensive to tax payers. And she SLIPPED out the truth. JMHO.

82. Naturally she's in love
Best-selling author and top conservative commentator Ann Coulter says John McCain’s choice of Gov. Sarah Palin as his running mate has finally won the Arizona senator her support — sort of.

In an exclusive interview with Newsmax.com, Coulter reacted to the emergence of Palin on the national political scene with enthusiasm — and her biting wit.

When Newsmax asked her opinion of the treatment being accorded Palin by the mainstream media, the feminists and the left, she told us: “The last woman I saw treated this badly by the mainstream media was . . . let’s see now . . . oh yeah — me.”

Newsmax: Are they after her because they fear she'll turn the tide?

Coulter: No. They’re after her because she’s already turned the tide. The feminists just figured out that Sarah Palin has debunked everything they’ve believed for the past 40 years. Plus, they’re bitter, dried-up hags and she’s a major hottie.

73. The Mainstream Media gives McCain & Palin a free pass and NO scrutiny.
Its great that you have the Huffington Post and bloggers pointing out stupid mistakes by McCain and the new Miss South Carolina/ Sarah Palin. What isn't good is the continual refusal of the mainstream media to hold McCain and Palin to account for their numerous lies, distortions, exaggerations and their collective acts of hypocrisy and cynical posturing. McCain and Palin have lied repeatedly about Obama wanting to raise taxes ( the truth being that most Americans would receive a tax cut under President Obama and the Democrats).
McCain in 2008 is the not the same guy who ran against Bush in 2000 and who nearly left the GOP after Bush's dubious victory.
Not a mention of the differences in the MSM. Instead, we get the likes of Dana Bash and Ed Henry parroting every talking point the Republican press office instructs them to broadcast.
McCain makes dozens of flip-flops and the media lets him away with it.

McCain has had four incidents of the deadly Melanoma skin cancer and could easily die within the next two years. What would this mean for the Country ?
We would then be left with a far-right fundamentalist redneck in Sarah Palin as President whose policies are far more extreme than Bush and Cheney combined.

When is the Media going to wake up and start asking some proper questions to the Republicans ? The MSM misled the people into believing Bush's case for war in Iraq, aided Karl Rove's smears and continually lets the Republicans get away with falsehoods.

She's going to learn a few more one-liners to make her look sharp.

Like McCain's "The fundamentals of our economy is strong" and "We need to drill here and drill now"

I think the MSM has been trying to get specific info from Obama/Biden to assist McCain/Palin prep for interviews and debates.
If so, it seems our camp might be aware of this because they have been answering questions without tipping their hands.

98. You have to ask yourself: Why do I, as a Canadian, know more about this shit than Palin?
Seriously...it's unthinkable that a someone outside your country knows more about your government and economic institutions than a freaking vice presidential nominee.

121. Too big and expensive for the taxpayers definitely rings of the GOP playbook.
It's the perfect comment to send out to a bunch of uncritical Republicans who lap this shit up like my cats out by the swimming pool on a hot August day. The pool water isn't what they should be drinking, but they don't know any better.

102. This doesn't matter
It should, don't get me wrong, but it doesn't. She isn't in this race because of her brains or knowledge, she doesn't have much of either. She's horribly underqualified to be VP and her lack of any knowledge is more frightening than McCains. But she isn't running on that, and neither is McCain. They're running on image, and have had mythic personas created for them. So for the next two months we're going to have the two swashbuckling, reforming Mavericks "G.I. John and Superwoman" paraded around this country preparing to save the day.

It doesn't matter that neither one of them know anything. Just as long as they look and sound ok enough to pull off the fake images, they'll be fine.

If they get in office and have to govern, that's another story altogether. And it doesn't have a happy ending.

109. Republicans love this subject
Republicans love these types of attacks from Dems and encourage them.
Here in Texas, Ann Richards ran against GW Bush for governor. She made
a "thing" out of his uninformedness and general ignorance. So did Al Gore
when he ran against Bush.

I wonder if Repubs don't encourage this, because they can
spin it in their favor every time.

111. But people, she knows everything!
And this is an excerpt of an e-mail that was sent to me by someone I asked to quit sending me Republican propaganda. As like most Repugs, he isn't so bright. This is a part of this long crap about "Palin Power"

"In closing I must tell you that she is the best, most moral and most
focused leader I've seen since President Reagan. I feel, really strongly,
that like Alaska the rest of our country will love her within a few weeks.
Put simply, she represents middle America like NO leader we've ever had. I
think McCain made a totally brilliant move in choosing her. She's a maverick
who is probably tougher and more focused than McCain himself....and she
won't be a total "Yes Man" or more appropriately, woman. McCain will love
her.

In 2012 she will be President."

How can the author of this even compare her to Reagan? She hasn't even done that much far as I can see.

It's pathetic that such a dim bulb could even be considered for a spot on a national ticket, much less be selected. Dan Quayle, by comparison, is beginning to seem like an "elder statesman" these days.

125. Squat
The only fact that is becoming apparent is that Palin doesn't know squat about our government, industry, economy...well, she just doesn't know squat about anything south of the 49th parallel. All Biden has to do in the debate is ask some simple basic questions that illustrates this and she will bury herself.

133. This woman knows
absolutely NOTHING about...the law...the economy...foreign relations....hell, even the freakin' lower 48 from what I've seen. She's been living an insular little life in her own little world up in Alaska, far removed from anything and everything (and no, I'm not saying everyone in Alaska is like that - just this woman in particular. She seems to know about, and care about, nothing but Alaska). She's gotten as far as she has on pure dumb luck, looks, and back-stabbing. She's not fit to be Governor of a state, let alone the Vice President, and listening to idiots talk about how she has such GREAT experience makes me want to bash my brains against a concrete wall. :banghead:

Of course, the American populace has to know a little about some of these issues, as well, to know that she is talking out of her ass, and I'm afraid that there are a great many people in this land who are no more clued-in than she is and won't know the difference unless our oh-so-useful media points some of it out. Of course, then those folks will just jump and holler that the poor, sweet dear is being picked on! Because, you know, she's "one of us"!!

Someone on DU said the other day that it's like "taking a kindergartner and putting them in college and then saying they have experience in education". I thought that was pretty accurate.

As much of a laughing stock as Bush has been to our image around the world, just think what a laughing stock this woman will be after a few meetings with world leaders.:eyes:

What a nightmare.

... lending giants Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac had "gotten too big and too expensive to the taxpayers."

They will be incredibly expensive to tax payers, perhaps the most expensive thing in our lifetimes.

Yes, they were too big, and they were too unregulated, and we should not as tax payers have to foot the bill for these irresponsible Wall Street shysters enabled by the corrupt Federal Reserve.
