Palin faces scrutiny, Internet rumours as VP pick

Updated Mon. Sep. 1 2008 7:09 AM ET

CTV.ca News Staff

Just days after Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin was made the surprise Republican candidate for vice president, she has been vigorously attacked on left-wing blogs and even her hometown newspapers.

<snip ethics investigation and bridge-to-nowhere controversy>

Another Alaskan Newspaper, the Daily News-Miner, had a similar article on Sunday. And on Saturday, one of that newspaper's columnists praised her record as governor but wrote "in no way does her year-and-a-half as governor of Alaska qualify her to be vice president or president of the United States."

<snip>

The most-vicious, from the left-leaning Daily Kos, contains completely unsubstantiated rumours about her recent pregnancy.

The Anchorage Daily News wrote at the time, "That the pregnancy is so advanced it astonished all who heard the news. The governor, a runner who's always been trim, simply doesn't look pregnant."

1. so they are labeling the rumours "vicious" and "unsubstantiated."

What we should be concentrating on with Palin is her inexperience and extremism.

3. Damning with faint praise
They say the rumors are unsubstantiated, then in the next paragraph give them substance.

5. They may be vicious
but there is substantiation.

At this point I believe the baby is Palin's. But the fact that she acted so irresponsibly when she went into labor is disgusting.

9. This is giving the rumor substance:
The governor, a runner who's always been trim, simply doesn't look pregnant."

Substantiation is actual facts and not simply someone's opinion on how she looks. Come up with actual facts and not just opinions and this might go somewhere. So where is the actual proof and not just opinions? My guess is that if there were video of the delivery and a signed and sworn statement from the doctor who delivered the baby that there still would be people here who would not believe it.

2. Oh shit, here we go..... those nasty left-wingers are vicious rumor mongers!
It wasn't the left wing blogs who started this whole "rumor", they are just repeating it with good reason. My wife is by no means as left as me politically, and I showed her some of the photos posted of Sarah and Bristol Palin. She said immediately that Bristol is the one pregnant in two or three of the photos. My wife has no dog in the hunt, but spots a fraud when she sees one.

4. Yes, vicious. As opposed to calling Obama a Muslim extremist.
Of course, it's a left-wing blog doing it, as opposed to Fox News and other mainstream sources that perpetuate every malignant rumor about Obama.

13. And the Anchorage daily news wasn't doing it too
the baby rumor started in Alaska, not DU or, as in the Muslin lie, Freerepublic.

8. I wondered if this pregnancy issue would make it to the MSM
The language ("vicious") is interesting - CTV is fairly rightwing by Canadian standards, so this may indicate some panic over the issue.

11. This baby stuff is a trap

We need to just stay away from it. I promise you we'll hear McCain mention DailyKos at some point, detail how they vigorously attacked a women with a DS baby, and then equate all that bullshit to Obama.

12. What the story fails to mention is that according to the
Edited on Mon Sep-01-08 10:57 AM by LibDemAlways
story told by Palin herself, she experienced the beginnings of labor while at a conference in Texas but went on to make a speech 8 hours later and then took two separate commercial flights back to Alaska. That is not unsubstatiated rumor. It is, according to Palin, fact. I see nothing wrong with scrutinizing her actions and questioning her judgment. She's running as the VP of a senior citizen. The public has a right to know how she ticks.

16. And then for some reason neded to drive another 45 minutes to an out-of-the-way
clinic where she is well-connected and where the birth was, apparently, not in the usual way recorded.

21. The whole thing stinks to high heaven. Not even a
soap opera writer could come up with this shit. Now add the daughter's newly disclosed pregnancy and the plot thickens.

What the hell was McCain thinking? Fact is he wasn't.

14. I think that part of the purpose of this site is to promote Democratic Ideas, and the Party.
I think that we must win the White House. The world needs to improve. If there is something that we can do to legitimately get Gov. Palin to not be acceptable to the Rest of the Electorate, we must do that. Rock On!

15. What I don't understand
Is that Sarah says she had a rupture in the amniotic membrane and her doctor allowed her to travel all that time. I had the same thing occur and I was told to immediately get into the hospital. BTW, my labor was induced. I can't see a doctor telling a patient that it's OK to take your time in this situtation. The only conclusion I can make is that this woman just isn't very bright, I've already assigned her my pet name of Georgina.
