Gustav Impacts Reaching Louisiana
Meteorologist, The Weather Channel
9:19 p.m. ET 8/31/2008

As of 7 p.m. CDT, Gustav was centered about 250 miles south-southeast of New Orleans and is moving at to the northwest at a pretty good clip at 17 mph.
View the Gustav Tracker. Gustav's weakening trend may be over and, despite some strengthening as it approaches Louisiana, the hurricane will likely remain a Category 3. Signs of some recent strengthening include a pressure drop to 952 millibars; down from 960 mb earlier today. This said, Gustav continues to be a dangerous major hurricane and will move into Louisiana Monday.

Hurricane Gustav should continue to move in a northwesterly direction with some slightly slowing through Monday. On that path and speed the landfall should occur Monday morning, however any turn to the west would prolong the landfall into Monday afternoon or evening.

Squally showers will increasingly brush the Gulf Coast from the western Florida peninsula and far southeastern Louisiana through this evening. Stronger outer bands of squally showers should move into the Florida panhandle, southern Alabama, southern Mississippi and more of the Louisiana coast tonight. The threat of tornadoes increases overnight in those areas as well. All interests along the Gulf Coast should pay very close attention to this extremely dangerous storm.

Protected path and forecast viewable at link. Gustav's center of circulation will pass west of New Orleans, rather than miles to the east, making it a potentially stronger impact on the city.

1. While it will be the slightly stronger side of the storm,
at least they won'y have the hours of southerly wind pushing the lake into the city.

10. I noticed that also.......
but I did see in the aerial footage of the congestion one or three cars moving quickly in the otherwise empty inbound lanes. I hope that all those fleeing will be ok.

8. Stuck in traffic happens during evacuations
Lottsa people, too few routes out of the SE Coast areas, few know the county roads, so use the Interstates, and sensible evacuation should be 2 days before storm, not 1

I watched I-65 turn into a parking lot 90 miles North of Mobile Al. while the hurricane rolled in, in '95.
Listened to news of same in subsequent hurricanes.
