New rules proposed to protect anti-abortion doctors
Source: CNN

WASHINGTON (AP) -- The Bush administration Thursday proposed stronger job protections for doctors and other health care workers who refuse to participate in abortions because of religious or moral objections.

Health and Human Services Secretary Michael Leavitt said that health care professionals should not face retaliation from employers or from medical societies because they object to abortion

1. I love the use of the word "retaliation."
So a doctor refuses to do the job he/she took an oath to perform, his employer disciplines him/her, and that's "retaliation?" I have another term for it: "good management."

2. yeah it's the "anti-abortion doctors" who need protection

11. Is this for real?
I live in Saskatchewan, a province of small towns and small cities. In one of those towns, we had a fuss a year or so ago because the only hospital there was Catholic-run and would not perform sterilizations. When a new hospital was in the works, a large group of locals worked to make sure it would not be a Catholic hospital. I can't imagine what it would be like living in a small community where the only OB-GYN in town won't do sterilization. I live Regina (the capital city) and was lucky enough to deal with doctors who gave me no hassle when I wanted my tubes tied.

6. What does "other health care workers" include?
Does it include, for instance, - a pharmacist - who might refuse to give you emergency contraceptives?

There are small towns in middle America where there is only one pharmacy for hundreds of miles ...So if some jerk decides he will not fill a prescription for PlanB, can he get away with it?...

I ve been in a situation like this before - Trust me - You panic like shit in that moment and the last thing you want is the law providing protection to assholes.

7. Phony issue.
Edited on Thu Aug-21-08 05:51 PM by Xap
The chances of anyone ever being forced or even asked to participate in an abortion procedure without their full informed consent are probably nil.

No doubt everybody who is involved in these sorts of activities is very, very carefully pre-screened to prevent any potentially dangerous types from gaining access and going postal.

8. This is a problem?
Retaliation?

Examples please Mr. Leavitt. Enough examples to warrant "stronger protection".

How about gays in the workplace and military.... should they face retaliation for their beliefs? Jess askin'.....

13. Sure they need protection.
So many of them have been murdered because they provided health care. Why aren't our representatives listening to us?
