Source: reuters

PORTLAND, Aug 4 (Reuters) - A small plane crashed into a vacation home on the Oregon coast on Monday, killing three children inside and two adults on board, officials said.

The bodies of the two adults in the single-engine plane had not been recovered, but an adult and two other children were hospitalized with injuries, he said.

The plane crash in early morning fog was followed by an explosion that also severely damaged the house next door.

The plane was rented from Aviation Adventures, a company in nearby Seaside Oregon. (Reporting by Teresa Carson; Editing by Doina Chiacu)

1. Reason #2347 why GA needs to be banned now!
It's a conspicuous consumption hobby for only rich theives. They put the public at risk with their toys.

4. I said General Aviation
You have no defense for your position so you pretend not to understand what others say. That's a really sad debate technique.

5. You need to learn what you're talking about so you don't
embarrass yourself in front of all of your peers.

General aviation refers to all flights other than military and scheduled airline flights.

That means if the CEO of Google needs to fly to New York on the Google Boeing 757 corporate plane, you're opposed to this since you want to halt general aviation.

What else do you need me to teach you greenvpi?

11. You are wrong
I fly for a hobby, and I am what many would call "middle class". I own a Toyota mini-van and my wife drives a Mazda 3. We live in a 3 bedroom 1800 sf home. We aren't "rich". Two of my good friends that I work with both own airplanes...one owns a Piper Cub, the other owns a Taylorcraft. I know of another guy who makes less than I do that owns a Piper Warrior. GA isn't a hobby for "rich thieves".

Some people pour money into their boats so they can go out on the lake for the weekend. I put my money into flying...I rent for now, but I plan on owning my own. Did you know you can buy a used Cessna for $20,000 to $50,000? Many people do it...they can give up buying a new car and instead by an airplane. That's what I'm going to do, and my wife and I both look forward to it.

General aviation is all other aviation outside scheduled commercial airlines and military. Medical life-flight? That's considered GA. Traffic helicopter? Categorized as GA. Business teams traveling to a meeting with a client on a Learjet? GA. Aerial photography? GA. Flight training schools? GA. Some poor middle-class guy that's put his money into a $30,000 "toy" to go have fun in? GA.

If you don't like "hobbies" that cost money, then perhaps you can move along to banning ski boats and party barges, RVs, camping trailers, and amateur racing like my friend does (he makes about $75k a year, but owns a Lotus Elise that he races). Get off the high horse!

14. Rich thieves?!?!
I have two relatives who fly, and came close myself (I was short on the solo flight time when I had to give it up). None of us are rich. Most private pilots are anything but rich.

16. GA isn't just for the rich. Or it didn't used to be.
My dad, in addition to being a Master Navigator and Electronic Warfare Officer in the USAF, flew F-4s and EB-66s and all sorts of other military planes. In his spare time he hung out at the base Aero Club and got his private pilot's license, his commercial pilot's license, and his instructor's license.

He never had anywhere near enough money in his life to own a plane. He rented them at the Aero Club. He used to take Mom and me and my sister up to see the sights from above, and it was just plain fun. We traveled up to Jackson Hole )from UT) when I was little, to visit my uncle. And later we used to fly down (again from UT) to Grandma's ranch in NV to go deer hunting.

He especially loved teaching others how to fly, and tried to get me interested but I was scared of heights, lol.

My dad never earned more than $28k a year in the AF. Even then it wasn't that much for a family of 4.

18. Why do you misunderstand General Aviation?
Have you failed to do research on the subject? Or have you had a bad experience? I'm sorry if something has turned you off to "those little planes", but GA is far from a "conspicuous consumption hobby" for "rich theives" (sic). Refer to the list presented by DemoTex, and then try to understand how much of our economy and indeed, our creature comforts depend on GA. Try to overnight something without it.

What really angers me personally, however, is your blanket accusation that GA is simply a rich person's toy habit. I am a GA pilot. I make about 40K annually, and I scrimp and save to rent a plane when I can. My family comes first, so I really don't fly anywhere near as often as I would like. The important thought I would like you to understand, however, is that becoming a pilot has, for me at least, been a journey of personal development which has made me a better, stronger, and more honest person. It has given me a new understanding of who I am, in a very quiet and private place in my soul.

I hope that you can take another look at those of us who "break the surly bonds of earth", and perhaps whatever has caused you to turn against GA will be erased by a fresh perspective.

2. I personally knew five people who have died in...
...small airplane crashes--three separate crashes.

I don't know anyone personally who has died as a result of a car accident.

My experience may be unusual, but it is what it is.

12. It might seem that way...
but flying is actually much safer than driving. I've been flying for 12 years now, and I've had far more frightening moments in a car than in an aircraft. That being said, I also know people that have died in aviation accidents...but all of them were flying Army helicopters (I used to fly for the Army), which is far and away more dangerous than normal run-of-the-mill flying. When you are skimming over the trees at night wearing NVGs, there's an inherent risk associated with that. Far different than flying on very stable, predictable airline flights, etc.

10. Brings back bad memories here in Phoenix
We had a small plane crash, gosh, I guess almost 20 years ago now. A pilot with no passengers crashed her small plane into a backyard bbq party. Two young girls were sitting on a raft in the pool. One was decapitated, the other survived with some broken bones. The survivor was a friend of my sister's. A bunch of adults at the party were killed as well.

I was a few blocks away working at my job at an answering service. First I knew of it was the GM called to ask if the phones were working. I said yes, why? He said, "I just heard the news that a plane crashed at 16th and Thomas, so I wanted to make sure the phones were okay." (That's the corner the answering service was on.)

Gee, thanks for the concern about your employees. :eyes:

My heartfelt condolences to all the victims of the Oregon tragedy.

17. My best friend lives in Gearhart
I visited her there a year ago. That ain't a big town, everyone knows everyone else. My friend heard the plane crash, but assumed it was the sound of the garbage trucks in the neighborhood.

I saw a plane like that go down in Van Nuys, CA in 1978. Swore I'd never get on one of those.
