Washington Mutual plans layoffs in Cobb (Georgia)

Washington Mutual Inc. plans to cut 98 jobs in Cobb County by Jan. 31, according to the Georgia Department of Labor.

Seattle-based Washington Mutual (NYSE: WM) officials said the company is consolidating much of its back office operations to eliminate redundancies in its corporate structure and to counter the slowdown in the mortgage market.

Washington Mutual, which has 80 locations in Atlanta, has positioned itself as the customer-focused, friendly bank that offers free checking without restrictions. The bank has spent millions on TV ads that poke fun at other banks' limits on cashier visits, and they call their bank locations "stores" instead of branches.

They're like locusts, one on every corner like Starbucks. Where is the money coming from for all that rent?
