| 122. MSNBC- George Carlin to get Mark Twain humor award |
http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/25218169 / Comedian makes people not only laugh, but think, chairman says Robert Sebree / AP WASHINGTON - George Carlin will be awarded the 11th annual Mark Twain Prize for American Humor. The John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts announced Tuesday that Carlin will be honored for his 50-year career as a Grammy-winning standup comedian, writer and actor. The center will salute Carlin at a tribute performance by former colleagues November 10th, which will be broadcast later on PBS. Kennedy Center Chairman Stephen Schwarzman says Carlin makes people laugh but also makes them think. Carlin, 71, has released 22 solo albums and three best-selling books. He starred a variety of TV and movie roles and is famous for his “Seven Words You Can Never Say On TV” routine.

Well, he kicked a few fascist assholes before he left. This administration really brought out the deepest of George Carlin. I was impressed.
Hey man, how's the weather up there?

and he could even make it funny! Now THAT is a miracle! R.I.P. George.

I guess he's just got a better view now.
| 30. As Hunter Thompson used to say about someone he admired.. |
He Stomped On the Terra! Meaning, I believe, he left larger-than-life footprints, he made a noise, he made his presence known, he made a difference! Farewell, Mr. Carlin...
| 31. Shit. Piss. Fuck. Cocksucker. Mother Fucker. and Tits. |

The seven dirty words you can't say on television.
And "tits"?
Saw Mr. Carlin in an small venue in Vermont - he was excellent.
And for euphemsism, for masturbation, he liked what a (supposedly) audence member suggested - "shaking hands with the unemployed".

Thank you George, for so many moments of pleasure. RIP

My favorite: A dog exploded on a busy downtown street corner today. Nobody was injured, however 20 people were overcome by fur. Police also estimate that somewhere between 100 and 150 fleas also lost their lives in the blast.

| 255. At city lake today.. |

...police arrested a one armed man for bothering the other boaters by continuously rowing in a circle.
RIP George.

I love you George ....
Rest in Peace, old man ....
| 43. What He Believed, How He Thought, Why We Should Love and Respect Mr. Carlin - RIP |
http://www.positiveatheism.org/hist/quotes/qframe.htm Religion: If this offends you, welcome to the world of sane and realistic critical thought. More harm has been done to the collective human psyche by religion than by all the fucking and cocksucking since the dawn of time. By the way, many religious people (including the ordained) fuck and suck each other's cocks all the time.
*
I don't have any beliefs or allegiances. I don't believe in this country, I don't believe in religion, or a god, and I don't believe in all these man-made institutional ideas.
*
In the Bullshit Department, a businessman can't hold a candle to a clergyman. 'Cause I gotta tell you the truth, folks. When it comes to bullshit, big-time, major league bullshit, you have to stand in awe of the all-time champion of false promises and exaggerated claims: religion. No contest. No contest. Religion. Religion easily has the greatest bullshit story ever told. Think about it. Religion has actually convinced people that there's an invisible man -- living in the sky -- who watches everything you do, every minute of every day. And the invisible man has a special list of ten things he does not want you to do. And if you do any of these ten things, he has a special place, full of fire and smoke and burning and torture and anguish, where he will send you to live and suffer and burn and choke and scream and cry forever and ever 'til the end of time! But He loves you. He loves you, and He needs money! He always needs money! He's all-powerful, all-perfect, all-knowing, and all-wise, somehow just can't handle money! Religion takes in billions of dollars, they pay no taxes, and they always need a little more. Now, you talk about a good bullshit story. Holy Shit! -- George Carlin Politically Incorrect, May 29, 1997
*
I think it's the duty of the comedian to find out where the line is drawn and cross it deliberately.* Goodbye Mr. George Carlin. RIP You lived your one life to fullest. Changed the way people viewed the world. And made them laugh in the process. Respect.
Religion easily has the greatest bullshit story ever told.
The world is just less funny now.
I'm getting down the wine...
who's all with me?
George, you sometimes made me say, oh that's too much!, and I thank you for being brutally honest to your final days!
May God understand him, I know of his beliefs, but I want him there in heaven with me, he was a magnificently hilarious man!
Sigh... what the hell is it with these heart attacks... No more dammit. Do heart attacks go up in the summer? I would guess so...
| 48. My favorite comedian of all-time. Rest In Peace |
One of my all-time favorite misanthropes.
Damn!!! We really need his voice in this election cycle. Last comment I heard attributed to him was that he watched The Daily Show on a regular basis and that he thought Lewis Black was the one comic out there today who was really following in his footsteps.
At least he is finally back together with his beloved wife Brenda. He was noticably sadder and angrier since she passed away a few years ago.
| 54. I saw him work a college in the early seventies... |
It was not long after he'd transformed from well-groomed Tonight Show comic to bearded hippie observationalist.
I was eleven years old, and he was the most incredibly funny person I'd ever seen. In addition to the laughs, he was the ultimate cynic who trusted nobody's motives. The man changed the way I looked at the world and made me determined to challenge everything and everyone.
I am so sad to lose him. He wasn't always "right" as I see things, but he always forced me out of my comfy place and made me think.
Goodbye George, and safe travels. May there be more like you, and soon.
but i know you won't miss us... ya crotchety old bastard! (man i'm gonna miss that guy).. sigh..

I cannot believe the amount of entertainers and TV individuals that have passed on recently.
Meanwhile, Dane Cook still walks the Earth.
if it's true that what goes around, comes around, and if it actually pays attention to the newtonian laws of motion, dane cook's karmic retribution will be something to behold... from a very safe distince.... like say... mars or thereabouts.
having said that, damn, the old guy's gone... i just finished his book brain droppings... excellent work.
best carlin skits/standups ever: asshole, jackoff, scumbag the ice box man a place for my stuff and the all time greatest carlin standup: "femenist blowjob"
"hey there! which one of you cute cupcakes wants to come home with me and cook me dinner and give me a blowjob?"
i spewed my drink when i heard that... first time ever... and not the last
thanks for the laughs mr. c.

| 67. Dang, rest in peace, george |
| 69. IIRC he was a priest for a while |
Some of the greatest cynics and atheists have come from the catholic church. Kind of makes you wonder about the ones that go in... and stay... God Bless George, if there is a heaven, I really hope you get there. George, George, and the rest... I hope at least God is having some good laughs He's got the best comedians. RIP
| 81. Here's where George really starts to hope that God has a sense of humor. |
"God Bless George, if there is a heaven, I really hope you get there."
If not, I suppose he'll find himself up on a roof somewhere, having been transformed into a Frisbee.
| 157. I seriously doubt he gave a damn about such things. |
| 173. god does have a sense of humor |
how else would he put up with all the crazies that invoke his name when they do something stupid.
i'm sure there is a place for mr. c. in god's place... it wouldn't be heaven without a good comedy club.
| 178. He was never a priest |
Just got an intense Catholic upbringing.
People who get that kind of upbringing often react to it in a decisive manner. Atheism is certainly decisive.
One of the funniest, truest and most cynical. I am so sad.
| 72. He was my favorite :((((((( |
| 73. We love you, George and we'll miss you so very much. See you on the other side, dude. |
| 74. I am very sorry to learn of this. |
I always thought he was great. In many ways he was like a modern day Lenny Bruce - part comedian, part elder social mores statesman.
RIP, George. You will be missed.
| 75. The best comedian of all time. I just listened to Complaints and Grievances last night |
I think I'm gonna go listen to it again...
| 76. A terrible loss indeed :( |
| 77. Al Sleet (paraphrasing): |
"Our radar shows a line of thundershowers on a line and twenty miles either side of a line from St. Joseph, Missouri to Fond du Lac. However, it also shows an incoming squadron of Russian ICBMs...so I wouldn't sweat the thundershowers, gang." John Good disillusioned Catholic boy like me. He was kinda one of my heroes. See ya in purgatory, George.
Aw man...
What a bummer!!!
I loved him! Loved him for a LONG time!
My son's best friend can replicate all his routines, and could even when he was too young to be listening to stuff like that.
Rest in Peace, Mr. Carlin. You were One Class Act. And boy do we still need you...
| 80. shit fuck piss cunt cocksucker, motherfucker and tits. |
Thanks for your candor, Mr. Carlin. I miss you already.
| 221. Red hot lesbians ... |
What about red hot lesbians. Isn't that what Stern got into trouble over?
| 82. I was SHOCKED when I heard. :-( |
to me, it seems like i'm losing one of my own. shitty, hack comedians like mencia, dane cook, or whatever pathetic two-bit clowns seem to proliferate and thrive (to borrow from bill hicks) while real artists mire in obscurity. carlin was a great comedian, and he will be missed dearly.
He enlightened us with common sense and a laugh and made us think. And that's why he will be remembered as a great human being. RIP George.
This man open my eyes to alot of things, please listen to the words of all his works
| 86. I'll miss you, George. |
I just recently heard his riff made up entirely of "Modern Buzz Words". Truth in every word.

This mother**cking sucks tits and shoots piss and sh*t!! Death is a c*cksucking c*nt! (Sorry George, I tried to get all seven in there) Heh...and that was my 420th post...how fitting
| 90. I rarely missed him as a kid on Carson. |
Edited on Mon Jun-23-08 05:15 AM by onehandle
My parents would let me stay up late for his appearances. Saw him perform for the last time just a few years ago.
We'll miss you, George.
| 91. That is just like him. |
Edited on Mon Jun-23-08 05:03 AM by tomg
It just was announced on the 18th that he was to be given the Mark Twain Award for American Humour on November 11th at the Kennedy Center. And then he goes and tells us all to go fuck ourselves by dying. Truly great.
| 92. My prayers are to Joe Pesci today |
You know who I pray to? Joe Pesci. Joe Pesci. Two reasons; first of all, I think he's a good actor. Okay. To me, that counts. Second; he looks like a guy who can get things done. Joe Pesci doesn't fuck around. Doesn't fuck around. In fact, Joe Pesci came through on a couple of things that God was having trouble with. For years I asked God to do something about my noisy neighbor with the barking dog. Joe Pesci straightened that cock-sucker out with one visit. I noticed that of all the prayers I used to offer to God, and all the prayers that I now offer to Joe Pesci, are being answered at about the same 50 percent rate. Half the time I get what I want. Half the time I don't. Same as God 50-50. Same as the four leaf clover, the horse shoe, the rabbit's foot, and the wishing well. Same as the mojo man. Same as the voodoo lady who tells your fortune by squeezing the goat's testicles. It's all the same; 50-50. So just pick your superstitions, sit back, make a wish and enjoy yourself.
| 94. Rest in peace George and please say hello to Bill Hicks for me. |
| 171. Bill Hicks...another great one n/t |
| 95. Now I have no one to tell me what do so with my stuff |
I am very sad at the news of his passing. He was one of the few comedians who would really make me laugh.
I saw him live a couple of years ago. No one could do it like him.
| 97. Another good person lost. n/t |
| 99. I remember seeing this old man on 'Thomas the Tank Engine' - That old man was George Carlin |
He went through it all and was funny the whole way.
One of the greats has left us.
| 101. One of the best comedians ever. RIP Mr. Carlin |
| 102. Well this is a crappy way to start the week... |
Godspeed to you, Mr. Carlin. You'll be greatly missed. Thanks for the laughs.
| 103. RIP George. Saw his show last December. Fabulous. n/t |
| 104. My favorite comedian, a true comic genius. |
Peace be with you, George. May the sun always be at your back and the road firm beneath your feet.
| 107. Rest in peace, you funny motherfucker... |
Heard about it on the radio and got an email on Celebrity Death Beeper. I saw him live a few times, but the last comedy special (which I think I saw on HBO), he seemed to be having some trouble.
Now who will bash religion reliably for us?
So sad to hear this....the torch has now been passed to a new generation of comedians. Stewart & Colbert? Will they push the envelope of conventional comedy like George did?
From the silly: "Don't sweat the petty things and don't pet the sweaty things."To the profound: "Well, if crime fighters fight crime and fire fighters fight fire, what do freedom fighters fight? They never mention that part to us, do they?"George Carlin was the best.
what a great comedian he was. My condolences to his family and friends.
| 113. Damn, he was my favorite! I'm going to miss him! |
| 114. During the darkest times, he made us laugh. RIP dear friend. nt |
| 116. My favorite routine by him. |
| 217. That's a great one...n/t |
| 276. That's my favortie as well |
Damn, another icon of my youth gone.
| 118. ~PEACE~ George Carlin |
and Thanks for the wake-up calls.
| 119. There are no words..... |
| 120. If God had to take a C-guy.... |
...why didn't he take Cheney instead?
| 159. Because G'd doesn't want Cheney |
and hell's afraid he'll take over.
Rest in Peace, George. They just don't make them like you anymore...you broke the mold. You will be missed.
Hippy Dippy weather man!
But please.....hold those 7 words until AFTER you get past St.Pete and the gate!
Although, hell would be a lot more fun with the master clown!
Gee, He was Just Here a Minute Ago.
RIP George. You were my favorite comedian, there won't be another like you. Very well loved by so many who literally grew up with you. No matter what was going on in the world, all the bullshit - you always had this special window to the truth that you could get everyone to look out of for just a few minutes. I am going to miss you!
| 126. He was not a schmuck. |
| 127. My signature line has always been my favorite Carlin quote.... |
| 128. Commented on another thread, but damn. |
He was my favorite comedian, and my father's favorite as well.
We'll miss you, George.
Only 71. He was my husband's favorite comedian. RIP, George.
| 130. George Carlin saved my life. |
I was depressed as a teen and George Carlin made me laugh when no one else could. I laughed until I cried, I laughed until I couldn't breathe. I'm going to miss him dearly.
RIP
| 131. FUCK NO..... He will be sorely missed |
When I was 13 my aunt asked me to be the godmother of her youngest daughter. I had to meet the priest to get all of the details arranged. My aunt, uncle and mother kept giggling to themselves. When we left, they all exclaimed "He looked so much like George Carlin, I expected him to just yell 'FUCK'!"
I didn't know who George Carlin was at the time. I found out about a year later. I loved him.
| 138. And Carlin played a priest well despite his dislike of religion |
If you've never seen the movie "Dogma" it's worth the rental just to see George play a humorous Cardinal. I wish he'd done a ton more acting than he did.
The Church that they filmed in front of was where my sister went to High School, right near where I grew up. Kevin Smith has a penchant for filming in random spots in NJ. Carlin is hilarious as the priest.
| 147. LOL Yeah, 'feel-good Jesus' was a classic nt |
| 179. He was also in one of the "Lonesome Dove" movies |
Did an EXCELLENT job. Hard to believe it was him. You're right, he should have done more acting.
He is a hero in our household. RIP, George.
He sure made me laugh....Thanks!
| 139. Two minutes... get your shit together! |
| 140. Rest in Peace, George. |
He was one of the great ones.
You brought laughter to many lives.
| 142. If *anyone* deserves the Russert treatment, IT'S GEORGE CARLIN! |
George Carlin is an American treasure, and far more informative than Russert ever thought of being.
My favorite quote. "I pay taxes so I don't have to feel sorry for people like you". I tell my kids that all of the time. they think it's something I made up.
He was a great comedian.
Another thing I will always remember about him was his ways to make baseball more interesting: randomly placed landmines in the outfield.
| 150. One of his best lines |
"Have you ever noticed that the people who are against abortions aren't people you'd want to fuck anyway?"
Man he was good. I have a Carlin tee-shirt that says "Simon says go fuck yourself." I think I'll dig it out and wear it today.
He was so un-PC, and I loved him for it. I'll never forget the first line in one of his HBO specials:
"You ever notice that most anti-abortion activists are people you'd never want to fuck anyway?"
Or his description of rice krispies:
"Little beige blisters of air, floating in the milk"
Or his characterization of yogurt:
"'yogurt' ... sounds like it's coming back up. Sorry, I make a point not to eat any food with a 'y' and a 'g' in it"
I'll miss him.
You made us laugh you made us think
I'm sorry you had to share your name with that dick in the White House
| 151. I saw him in May and he was the best I had ever seen him. |
He was a fighter to the very end and he will be sorely, sorely missed. "This conversation is bound to turn up. Two guys in a street meet each other and one of them says, 'hey, did you hear? Phil Davis died'. 'Phil Davis? I just saw him yesterday.' 'Yeah, didn't help. He died anyway. Apparently, the simple act of you seeing him did not slow down his cancer. In fact, it may have made it more aggressive. You know, you could be the cause for Phil's Death, how, do you live with yourself?'" -George Carlin, It's Bad For Ya, 2008. Cheers! NTF
I'll miss him. I remember seeing him when I was pregnant with my first child, DUMB move. I never laughed so hard.
Rest in peace George, you were a part of my life for over 30 years. Love ya guy.
RIP, George. You opened a lot of people's eyes while you made them laugh.
That's terrible! He certainly didn't look 71. He was young at heart. RIP George.
| 155. More proof there is no god. George Carlin is dead, yet Dennis Miller is still alive. n/t |
Im gonna miss that hippie dippie weatherman. That was the first thing I ever heard him do as a kid. A friend and I used to listen to him, or the Beatles, or Peter Paul and Mary while playing Monopoly during summer months.
what a shitty way to start a week. I'm about to go out the door for a cardio stress-test. What a reminder. George, buddy, you're already missed something awful
| 161. "Well, if crime fighters fight crime and fire fighters fight fire, |
what do freedom fighters fight? They never mention that part to us, do they?"
RIP George...
| 162. He was a better man than Tim Russert. |
And probably won't get even a portion of the attention.
and the Smothers Bros and Pat Paulson thruout all these years he was the mirror of sanity and spoke razor blade truth. In the last 10 years, I came to realize he spoke more truth than I knew. "They own you"...that's what he said and he was right. Another of the few voices of sanity is gone. sure give him the Mark Twain award. He deserves the Lenny Bruce award, if there is one. In fact, in future years, a very very very select few ought to win the George Carlin award. My heart is breaking.
| 165. DAMN......................RIP GC |
Rest peacefully, George. You'll be greatly missed.
| 167. Oh that's terrible news. |
When I heard he'd won the Mark Twain humor award after 50 years of comedy, I thought, "oh, I hope he's in good health" Had no idea he was that far up there in years.
Godspeed good man...we will miss you. You always made me think AND laugh
| 169. as one who generally hates standup comedy, Carlin was an exception . . . |
and someone who always made me laugh . . . and all he did was tell the truth . . .
RIP, Hippy Dippy Weatherman . . . you will be missed . . .
RIP George and thanks for everything.
| 174. I just hope that he is happy up in heaven |
| 175. I saw him in March at the Wang Center. Just awesome. |
| 177. Rest in Peace, George |
thank you for so many laughs, and some incredibly insightful observations
I am going to be watching all of my Carlin DVDs after work then.
| 182. shit, piss, and cunt, that's too bad |
See ya dude. Thanks for all the laughs. You had a good life. Goodbye.
| 183. He could do a virtual PhD thesis out of each of those "7 Deadly Words" |
with his routines. RIP, Mr. Carlin.
| 184. RIP - he was always my favorite comic, and a great truth-teller |
| 186. Really, really sad --- an intelligent man -- if not a genius of comedy --- |

We'll miss him ---
PS: It feels lonelier already --- !!!
| 187. "great" is an understatement |

words fail me. they really do.

Shit! But, he's with the Lord now. RIP Mr. Carlin.
I remember as a little kid laughing at him till I cried when he was on Ed Sullivan.
He was such a student and master of the English language, that I think he qualified as a linguist. Intelligent and funny.
He will be missed for a long time to come.
| 192. Fucked up news for a hippy dippy monday |
George was just the best. He will be missed, he was still so productive and still fucking funny. He was fucking funny and on it for decades, which is no easy thing, even for the likes of Carlin. First comedy record I ever bought, Class Clown. That record is still funny. .
| 193. The 19 year old young man who built my computer... |
is a devoted Carlin fan and downloaded a routine onto my hard drive. I've always loved Carlin and thought it was actually kind of amusing that he was still considered hip among the latest young crowd. I vaguely remember him during his suit and tie phase. Always gave me something to think about and I loved his play on words; all words.
"No thanks I'll get IN the plane, let Evil Fucking Knievel get ON the plane." "Who ever came up with the idea of a seat as a flotation device? Like I wanna smell another guys beer farts." RIP George.
| 195. Give'em hell, wherever you wind up George. You sure did here, & it was greatly appreciated. |
| 196. I almost broke down when i heard this |
| 197. Maybe the father of modern comedy... Damn, I'll miss him. |
I loved him. He was a genius. This one really hurts. Goodbye George. You will be missed.
| 199. And here I was thinking the day couldn't get worse. |
| 201. i've been a fan for over 30 years |
he was a comic genius...will be sorely missed
| 204. Damn it! I LOVED that mother fucker!! n/t |
| 205. From Carlin on Campus |
"I got fired from a Vegas hotel, for saying SHIT, in a town where the big game is called CRAPS. You know that down on the floor there's some fat texan shouting 'AWE SHIT! I CRAPPED!!"' Kick him the fuck out, will ya? Come on man."
| 206. Wow. So many of his jokes have become common expressions in my household. |
| 207. RIP, George. You're the best. n/t |
And the vultures over on IMDB are already crowing about Carlin "meeting the God he didn't believe in".
| 209. Ah shit, I loved George Carlin! Some of his better lines: |
I'm completely in favor of the separation of Church and State. My idea is that these two institutions screw us up enough on their own, so both of them together is certain death. Some national parks have long waiting lists for camping reservations. When you have to wait a year to sleep next to a tree, something is wrong. When cheese gets it's picture taken, what does it say? Why do croutons come in airtight packages? It's just stale bread to begin with. Have you ever noticed that anybody driving slower than you is an idiot, and anyone going faster than you is a maniac? If the #2 pencil is the most popular, why is it still #2? Well, if crime fighters fight crime and fire fighters fight fire, what do freedom fighters fight? They never mention that part to us, do they? I recently went to a new doctor and noticed he was located in something called the Professional Building. I felt better right away. Why is the man (or woman) who invests all your money called a broker? I think it's the duty of the comedian to find out where the line is drawn and cross it deliberately. Religion convinced the world that there's an invisible man in the sky who watches everything you do. And there's 10 things he doesn't want you to do or else you'll go to a burning place with a lake of fire until the end of eternity. But he loves you! ...And he needs money! If God had intended us not to masturbate he would've made our arms shorter. You know the good part about all those executions in Texas? Fewer Texans. Atheism is a non-prophet organization. Fighting for peace is like screwing for virginity. I went to a bookstore and asked the saleswoman, "Where's the self-help section?" She said if she told me, it would defeat the purpose. I would never want to be a member of a group whose symbol was a guy nailed to two pieces of wood. If you can't beat them, arrange to have them beaten. Most people work just hard enough not to get fired and get paid just enough money not to quit. The other night I ate at a real nice family restaurant. Every table had an argument going. You know an odd feeling? Sitting on the toilet eating a chocolate candy bar.
I figure that regardless of George's personal beliefs regarding religion if the bible thumpers and jeebus jumpers are correct someone, god or the devil either one has got their hands full right now.I also figure this passes the torch to people like Stewart, Colbert and their generation to be the guys with the large needle deflating the ego-driven powerful. Carlin was as good at it as anyone since Lenny Bruce and for sure we need someone or more than one someone like that now.The necrofile of good guys checking out just keeps getting longer, but this hurts as bad, or worse, than most.Carlin's passing affects me as much, or more than anyone's since Vonnegut left on his next great adventure.
| 210. death comes in 3 's they say.. |
do we get a choice on # 3 ????? Cause I am more than ready to vote...
Just listened to Carlin Complaints & Grievances opening lines.
" I don't do transitions"
good..then this is a dream and you are still here with us.
| 211. RIP George. Thanks for all the laughs. You were the best, and will be sorely missed. |
| 212. Good bye George -- from a lifelong admirer |
More than a comic, the world just lost one of it's greatest philosophers.
I've seen him live more than a dozen times and I have all his vinyl albums.
"A man has barricaded himself in his apartment. However he is alone and unarmed so no one cares."
"Christers want to have live babies so they can turn them into dead soldiers."
| 213. Worth 10,000 Tim Russerts... |
R.I.P. to a truth-teller of epic proportions.
| 214. Rest in Peace, George Carlin. |

with his politics in the right (left) place. he will be missed.

Someone just sent that to me in an email.
I saw George Carlin perform live in....
are you ready for this? Salt Lake City, Utah.
He wasn't playing in some back alley or smoked filled bar, he wasn't playing at the university...Not even the Delta (piece of shit) Center.
George actually sold out several shows every time he came through Utah and he performed at Symphony Hall...you know...where the symphony performs and operas are staged with gold leaf balconies and plush carpet and chairs. Where, if you weren't seated in time, you had to wait for intermission, because they weren't going to open the doors while he was on stage.
If there is a God, George is talking his way into heaven and Richard Pryor will be on the other side of those gates telling God, "Hey God, let him in...he was just tellin' a joke."
| 218. ahhh , shitting cuntfuckers .... |
George always told the truth. There is no comparison between him and Lil' Russ.
| 219. what a way to wake up :(. one of my favorite tracks---> |

My condolences to his wife and daughter.

This man had the courgage to say things no one dare even think of. My favorite being he would never call Bush president because he never really won! Rest in peace George...One of the greatest!

The world just got a little more bleak.
Go in peace, George.
| 228. Shit, Piss, Fuck, Cunt, Cocksucker, Motherfucker and Tits - RIP George |
| 270. I could see that on his headstone: |
Shit. Piss. Fuck. Cunt. Cocksucker. Motherfucker. Tits.
They won't let you say them up here, either.
George Denis Patrick Carlin 1937-2008
RIP
P.S. And "tits" still doesn't even belong on the list!Go in peace, master. You will be missed.

George always made us really focus on his humor...He told the truth about our society through his wonderful humor! I'll miss that man...RIP George.
| 230. George Carlin, you will be missed. |
He made me think about things in a way I'd never thought of; he is one of the few people in the world I can say truly changed my life.
| 232. We have lost the consummate truthteller. |
I'm extremely saddened by George Carlin's death.
| 233. " really haven't seen this many people in one place since they took the group photographs... |

Sigh...
George, we love ya...

Goodbye George. Thank you for changing the world.

Thank you so goddamn fucking much, I will never forget you, you made me a better person and changed my life forever. Thank you, thank you.
| 241. I got to see him in Houston |
He did some serious slicing and dicing of the oil business. There were like four of us who were just crying he was so funny. Lots of folks acted like they didn't get the jokes. I little close to home, perhaps. Rest in peace, you old hippy dippy weatherman. See you in the Summerland.
| 242. oh nooooooooo!!!! this is such bad news |

he was great, and he knew what was going on with this filthy goverment. Who can forget the "the Hippy dippy weatherman" gee, I'm going to miss him.

| 245. One of my favorite George Carlin lines, sadly appropriate today |
Edited on Mon Jun-23-08 01:02 PM by jgraz
"Richard Pryor had a heart attack; I had a heart attack. Richard went into rehab; I went into rehab. Richard set himself on fire; I said 'fuck that, I'm having another heart attack.'"
| 246. He is one fellow I am truely going to miss. |
He crossed the lines and he was one who spoke the truth that related to everyone.
He knew just how fake and phoney society really is and was not afraid to tell it like it really is.
I will miss him.

Not long before I read this, I was playing a YouTube clip of Marty Robbins singing Strawberry Roan, "a regular outlaw", as the song describes him, before launching into a description of his mean, ornery, misshapen appearance.
For younger people unfamiliar with the song, he starts off with the words, "Out in the horse corral standing alone, stands an old caballo, a strawberry roan...", and at that point the hairs on the back of my neck almost stand up. People like George, Joe Bageant and Hunter S remind me of that old beast. The old strawberry roan also puts me in mind of the donkey of G K Chesterton's poem of the same name. I suppose they're also both epitomes of suffering mankind, the good guys.
Still, I'm a bit disappointed with this thread. Sure, 4-letter words were part of George's repertoire. But with that kind of passionate anger at the despicable evil of the corporatism inflicted on the West by our dear leaders, it would have been difficult for him to have expressed himself otherwise - given the mutiple stresses of a Western society, in which everyone is seen as a mark by Big Business, to be cheated and tricked at every twist and turn.
But, heck, they were the least part of his gifts. A toddler could use them, and most of us wouldn't find it funny. On the other hand, his analyses of the the way we're all being ground into the dust in war and peace (half a million orphans in Iraq, as well) were incomparable. Hunter S Thompson was a master of white-hot invective, but George somehow managed to make you actually belly-laugh about the villainy, though without in any way trivialising it.
Incidentally, that's a nice touch, that George died in St John's hospital. I know he was an atheist, at least formally, but it was John the Apostle who stood beneath the cross with Mary on Calvary, loyal to the last. I think he recognised a kindred spirit.

true American hero. I mean that, he did a lot in his life to combat censorship and stand for free speech.
| 253. One of the greatest social observers and the greatest comic mind ever. |
You will be missed, George!
| 254. I had just started re-reading "When Will Jesus Bring the Porkchops?" |
Amazing comedian. What a sad day.
| 257. George Carlin did more for me than Russert ever did |
I hope the Media honor him well .
| 258. this country won't be the same without George Carlin. |
| 259. So sad, he will be missed. |
I used to watch his show when I was a kid, read my dads George Carlin book when I was about 9. Shocker, totally. Makes you think about other 71 year olds. Fuck.
| 261. He will be dearly missed. |
Goodbye Sir... I am truly sad I will no longer hear new material from your genius mind.
| 263. He shoulda died screwing two girls at the same time... in a church. |
It was a nice run, though. He left a fine body of work which will be quoted for decades.
| 265. "I don’t have pet peeves", “I have major, psychotic hatreds.” |
RIP George... you are still the greatest.
| 268. A man of honor and distinction. Truly a great. |
Far more than just a comedian. I loved this guy.
| 269. He was a pure genius and... |
true American icon. The world is lesser place for his loss.
| 272. I remember him as far back |
as his Hippy Dippy Weatherman. He had this routine back in the 70's (I think) about his "stuff." Like you have this stuff, have to move and take your stuff or get rid of some of the stuff. Then in your new place you start to collect more stuff. I'm a stuff-balance person, always trying to find stuff equilibrium betweem older and newer stuff. Too much stuff and I'm crowded, not enough stuff I feel deprived. Maybe he was telling me on Sunday to get rid of that useless stuff I had in the cabinets. Three bags to the dumpster. I also worked clearing out some useless stuff in my head. I love you George. Whether he's in some sort of heaven or not (uh...not), he looked out for us pretty good here on earth.
| 273. you know what is really weird for me... |
I have not actually listened to Carlin for years... until last night I was browsing youtube wasting time basically, and I came across a clip of his. I watched it and thought wow this is great, so I watched another. Then another, and another. Come to wake up this morning and find out this news The time I was watching, I swear it must have been around the time he died. And I had not watched him for years. Spooky. He was a great artist and will be missed.
| 274. This sucks. I will miss him. |
you know George and Bill Hicks are just firing up another joint and laughing about the world right about now
| 277. I saw him in Vegas in 2004 |
It was the start of his 2004 tour. Man, he was f*cking awesome.
| 278. Fucking sucks. Peace to you, Mr. Carlin. Thank you for your insightful wisdom, |
and fearlessness in the face of stupidity, prudery, tyranny.
Well, he did say he can't wait to be reincarnated, so that he could have sex with teenagers, again.
....truly saddens me....thank you George for the many hours of laughter and your irreplaceable irreverent wit....
....RIP, dear friend...
| 281. I have loved George from his "Hippy Dippy Weather man" days. RIP George. nm |
| 282. George Carlin was a master at pointing out the ridiculous and mundane in our lives and making us |
laugh about it. I am often reminded when I buy something I want, but not necessary need, about his routine on "stuff". That is a classic, just like George Carlin. He was the best. May he rest in peace.
he made me smile many times over the years. A truly great comedian.
| 285. George Carlin, on death and dying--- |
| 286. George Carlin reading Thomas the Tank Engine stories |
It was not just his comedy or his books that I liked about George Carlin. It was his readings of Thomas the Tank Engine stories. I loved them. He was a witty storyteller. When kid wanted repeat of Thomas the Tank Engine stories, I'd get out the George Carlin version. I often wonder if he ever wanted one of those trains to use one of the seven words! I thought it was so cool he won the Mark Twain award. He was an American classic. The world is a little emptier without him.
| 287. RIP George!... Kinda ironic that |
1 or 2 out of those 7 words....can't be said here!
| 288. Anyone remember him from a recent Tonight Show appearace.... |
where he was a guest along with Ann Coulter?
