by Seth Michaels

The UAW has endorsed Sen. Barack Obama (D-Ill.) for president.

The UAW, which has more than 1 million members, announced today the union is endorsing Obama after a unanimous vote of its International Executive Board.

UAW President Ron Gettelfinger said Obama was an inspiring leader who would fight for working families.

From the streets of Chicago to the state Legislature in Springfield, Ill., to the halls of the U.S. Senate, Barack Obama has been a voice for dignity and justice for working people. He has a strong program for a safe and secure America, which will protect our citizens and help our country prosper in a new century.

9. Odds are that the fire-fighters will endorse McCain. They tend to endorse Republicans.
Police are not as likely as firefighters but they are still more towards republicans.

But just because their organization endorses one candidate or the other doesn't mean the members totally support their leaders on something like this.

I belong to a different union and I was totally pissed off this past primary because our regional leader put out an endorsement which we try not to do for the primaries. And he endorsed the opponent to our former representative. Then all the local union officers were instructed that they had to support that candidate. Well that didn't sit well with them either. Since I wasn't an officer my hands weren't tied and I made sure that other members knew what the hell was going on. And they were wondering what the hell was going on too cause in past elections we had endorsed and supported her when she represented us.

5. Walter Reuther would love this, God bless him.
He insisted that civil rights would be a cornerstone of the UAW.

One of our great Americans, too often forgotten. I think of him in hearing this.

7. Solidarity forever!!
"...after a unanimous vote of its International Executive Board."

'When the Union's inspiration through the workers blood shall run,
There can be no power greater anywhere beneath the sun,
Yet what force on earth is weaker than the feeble strength of one?
But the Union makes us strong.'

8. I retired from UAW Local 160
The membership make up there was approx. 75% Republican. Nobody outside of union leadership claimed to be a Democrat. The whole place was bazaar.
