House subpoenas Karl Rove
Source: Associated Press

WASHINGTON (AP) — The House Judiciary Committee has subpoenaed former White House adviser Karl Rove as part of its inquiry into whether the Bush administration politically meddled at the Justice Department.

Accusations of politics governing decisions at the agency led to the resignation of former Attorney General Alberto Gonzales.

The subpoena issued Thursday orders Rove to testify before the House panel on July 10. He is expected to face questions about the White House's role in firing nine U.S. attorneys in 2006 and the prosecution of former Gov. Don Siegelman of Alabama, a Democrat.

Justice Department to enforce the subpoena.

My guess is that the DOJ will ignore the subpoena.

Don't mean to rain on your parade.

4. Didn't he already claim executive privilege today? How much longer is this going to be dragged on?
Bring contempt charges against this asshole already, not the first time he refused to testify and it wont be the last.

6. Wasn't that just for Siegelman though?
That wouldn't cover the firing of the U.S. attorneys.

I could be wrong and he could have already attempted to claim it on both.

11. I think you're right, but if he claimed it on that we already know he will claim it for this hearing
so why in the hell would they even waste their time? Bring the contempt charges already, by my count this will be the 3rd time he claims executive privilege.

14. Well, I think this may be the reason...
John Conyers on what they'll do if Rove doesn't show up for court: "We'll do what any self-respecting committee would do. We'd hold him in contempt. Either that or go and have him arrested."

He's claimed not to have spoken to anyone in the WH about Siegelman. Yet now he's trying to claim Executive Privilege in the case. I think this is about to get interesting.

Honestly, I think he'll get away with Executive Privilege in the firing of the U.S. attorneys, but not so easy on Siegelman. He has his own big mouth to thank for it too!

32. I tend to agree. Giving Rove until July 10 to appear seems silly.
Especially when he's already pretty much said FU. A much earlier date, like June 5 would seem to make more sense.
Then send the US Marshals on June 6th to arrest his ass.

But at least they're doing SOMEthing.

87. You might be right....but ONLY cuz the Election
is approaching. This is what politicians do (and the repugnants know it)...they do nothing after '06 election, but now that the big Prez Election is coming up in just 5 months, they'll find some golf balls to stuff in their pants and FINALLY go after fat karl.

And IF we do have an election and a dem is elected, ALL INVESTIGATIONS AND ANY PROSECUTIONS WILL BE STOPPED. The neocons/fascists will walk away scott free...just like after Iran-Contra. The message will be 'Forgiveness, Unity, Time to Move On'....yak yak blah blah. SAME OLD SHIT.

But this time, our country will be dying...more pressing issues like an ECONOMIC DEPRESSION, the likes we've never seen. And Washington DC and the WH will continue with its continued cocksucking of The Corporation.

It's like watching a pathetic Soap Opera....however, this time, Mother Nature is gonna have the last laugh.

Edited on Thu May-22-08 02:12 PM by FunMe
Until I see Rove answering questions and sweating like the pig he is, I won't celebrate.

Conyers has issued so many "threats" when these criminals refuse to testify that it is hard to be "happy" about any supoena.

Sometimes I wonder whether our own Democratic Party is part of the problem. When was the last time our Democrats actually put the feet to the fire of these republiCON criminals?

He'll claim executive privilege and he'll get away with it. Justice will decline prosecution of contempt charges and Congress will never follow through with inherent contempt charges.

The only way out of this is to elect Barack Obama and a Democratic Congress in November.

71. Hardly.
Your doctor has to maintain customer-patient privilege, right?

Does that expire when you find a new doctor?

No.

Privilege covers conversation between you and your doctor and any treatment that happened when you were his/her patient. Unless those conversations and treatment suddenly shift in time so that they happened when s/he wasn't your doctor, they're still covered by privilege.

Rove's current status is irrelevant. What's relevant is if what he did/said was covered by executive privilege. If it was, it still is, at least as long as both are alive (I'd think).

72. For any legal minds here: can the claim of executive privilege be challenged
Edited on Thu May-22-08 06:33 PM by ToughLuck
before Rove is expected to testify in July? It just seems that Rove will delay the process, and I wondered how, if at all, executive privilege could be ruled out before the start of the proceedings.

75. What's everybody crowing about?
If the past is any indicator, The House Judiciary Committee issues the subpoena, Karl Rove laughs and says "fuck you", and The House Judiciary Committee then throws up its hands and says "Oh, crud, we're beaten again, that's the end of that," and it goes nowhere.

79. My crystal ball foresees a case of amnesia....
I don't know why everyone is getting so excited about the prospect of Rove having to testify....if he does, we'll just get the age-old Republican strategy of repeating "I can't recall" over and over again....and there's nothing anyone can do about it. Surely everyone remembers Gonzalez' fantastic Alzheimer's routine when he was questioned??

80. It was bullshit during Clinton and it still is against Rove.
When the Repugs took congress and started to investigate everything under the sun, I along with most of America saw it for what it was, political payback. Sorry to say this, but I was congress to help solve the problems in America, not score political points with useless investigations THAT WILL GO NOWHERE! (And you all know it!) Nobody's mind will be changed, if you hate Rove, you still will. Rattle the sabers all you want, Rove and co are untouchable.

I felt bad for Clinton and I'm starting to feel bad for the Bush Admin. Congress should put forth an agenda to show America what is possible, not waste time on ego trips.

95. Rove and Bush agree with you 100%- well, except for the part about Clinton.
Edited on Fri May-23-08 12:02 PM by Dr Fate
The difference is Clinton did little or nothing wrong, while Rove is a real-live criminal.

I suppose you want the Democrats to arm themselves with knives in this gun-fight.

82. Siegelman brought up a good point.
If they really wanted to pursue this case they'd build it ground up. Bringing an associate up to pit against him in questioning. This just seems like so much fluff.
