American Axle Makes Proposal To UAW; Talks Set For Weekend

DETROIT -(Dow Jones)- American Axle & Manufacturing Holdings Inc. (AXL) said Friday that it made a new proposal to the United Auto Workers union as the two sides try to resolve a six-week-old strike.

The move comes a day after the company criticized a UAW proposal. Company spokeswoman Renee Rogers also said negotiations are expected to continue this weekend. About 3,650 American Axle workers represented by the UAW at five plants in Michigan and New York have been on strike since Feb. 26 in a dispute over wages and benefits.

The strike has forced customer General Motors Corp. (GM) to idle all or parts of 30 plants.

American Axle and the UAW appear far apart on key economic issues, but the company's proposal and the continued talks are a sign that the parties are at least working on the matter.
