US soldier killed in Baghdad bomb attack
Source: AFP

BAGHDAD (AFP) - A US soldier was killed by a roadside bomb in eastern Baghdad, where American and Iraqi forces are fighting Shiite militiamen, the US military said on Wednesday.

A statement said the soldier was killed on Tuesday "while conducting operations" but gave no further details.

The latest death brings to 10 the number of US soldiers killed in the capital since heavy fighting broke out on Sunday, mainly in Sadr City, the eastern Baghdad stronghold of anti-American Shiite cleric Moqtada al-Sadr.

The soldiers have been killed variously by rockets, roadside bombs, rocket-propelled grenades and small arms fire.

1. So 5 years after we "captured" Baghdad we still don't control it?
Betya Gen. Petraeus tells of progress to Congress today.

5. The iraqis seem to be able to rocket/mortar the Green Zone with impunity now.
They have either figured out how to avoid counterfire or there is no counterfire. The place seems to be shelled daily now. That was not always the case.

12. There are some 5-year old veterans out there
also battle-proven and hardened.
And somewhere among them are former Iraq army artillery officers with extensive knowledge how to mortar any position. Stupid move that was totally disbanding the Iraqi Army, today it is too late already.
