Edwards defeats Wynn (MD 4)
Source: Gazette.Net

U.S. Rep. Albert R. Wynn conceded Tuesday night to challenger Donna F. Edwards in his hard-fought 4th Congressional District re-election campaign.

. . .

‘‘Today the voters went to the polls looking for change. They selected a new leadership that will finally put the public’s interest first,” Edwards, a Fort Washington resident, told supporters. ‘‘I will wake up every morning and ask, ‘What can I do to make a difference in people’s lives?’”
. . .

The 4th District race was one of the most closely watched in the country.

A lawyer and social activist, Edwards has touted her community service work throughout her campaign while criticizing Wynn, who was seeking his ninth term, for his lack of constituent service. She portrayed Wynn as an ally of the Bush administration because of votes he said he made to support small business. She faulted his vote to support the war in Iraq, a vote he has since said he regretted.

1. This is the best news of the day (and night!). Wynn had become a PIG.
Donna Edwards is a breath of fresh air.

21. Really uncalled for name calling. I know Congressman Wynn. He was not my
congressman but he is not a pig. What is your basis for such a vicious attack? I respect the decision of the voters of the 4th district but this kind of rancor is unnecessary. Congressman Wynn does NOT deserve it.

3. Wynn was the Democratic establishment candidate
As an incumbent, he naturally drew lots of corporate contributions, but he also got the endorsement of the party pooh-bahs, from Nancy Pelosi on down. And he got crushed in the primary by rank-and-file Democrats.

Pelosi, Hoyer, and Reid had better get their attention focused. Wynn was their man in this race, and Democratic voters handed him his walking papers. Edwards mounted a serious challenge to Wynn in 2006, and finished the job this year. If congressional Democrats are concerned about their anemic approval ratings - and they should be - they can cure that by acting like an opposition party, instead of trying to merely blunt the worst excesses of the corrupt Bush administration.

We fight, we win.

6. Once upon a time, I hoped it wouldn't have to come to this,
but it has.

It's a real struggle, having to fight your own side's entrenched and ossified establishment--as well as the openly hostile R's, but we have to do what we have to do.

This is a start.

16. I would say so
We may not have the means to fight every corrupt bastard flying under Democratic colors, but we can fight some of them. And for the folks who get by this election, we should be sure to point to the political carcasses of former stalwarts like Al Wynne.

19. While grunting at the trough
the old pigs have the most sensitive bristles, and leave long before farmer Brown gets there with his .44 Colt.

The wave is building, and the cognoscenti realize this when they notice the starfish and crabs on the big new beach.

This is the shape of things to come.

17. The Democratic leaders keep putting up conservatives in Progressive races
which of course destroys the Progressive's chance of winning because a ton of money is thrown at the conservative by Dem Leaders.

It is good to see that Progressives can put up a very good candidate against one of the Bush Dog Dems and win.

A very good day.

4. Great News!
Grassroots efforts work. The establishment Dems are on notice, though I don't think the likes of Pelosi et al care or are worried. I hope they lose their jobs in November, to REAL Dems.

5. I have not yet picked
A Presidential candidate, so I felt a little left out from last nights festivities. But even though I am not a PG county voter, this was the best damn news I've had since Nov 2006. Congratulations Donna, kick some ass. If only we could clone you.

8. Donna Edwards was an extremely good candidate
who nearly unseated Wynn in 2006. She had a lot of grassroots and blog support, so her success won't be easy to replicate.

But the more success candidates like Edwards can have, the more likely it is that we will see change in Congress.

9. I saw this last night and I'm so glad you posted about this, Swag.
Such fabulous news. I e-mailed Wynn's campaign and told him to spread the word to other Bush suck-up Democrats that if they sell us down the river they can be replaced.
