Sarkozy on Bruni: 'It's Serious'
Source: AP

French President Nicolas Sarkozy said Tuesday his relationship with model-turned-singer Carla Bruni is serious, and he suggested that wedding plans are in the works.
..
Sarkozy's romance with Bruni reportedly started shortly after the French leader and his second wife, Cecilia Sarkozy, divorced three months ago.

Sarkozy, 52, and Bruni, a 40-year-old Italian-born French model with a successful folk music career, have since been photographed together in recent weeks in locations from Disneyland Paris to the pyramids in Egypt, often entwined arm-in-arm, looking happy.

The conservative president has been accused of publicizing his relationship with Bruni to try to distract from a dramatic recent slide in polls. Some analysts also say that Sarkozy's flaunting of his private life is a turnoff for many voters, especially more traditional ones.

Sarkozy said he wanted to break with a long tradition of French leaders keeping their love lives secret, with the media's tacit accord. He alluded to late former French President Francois Mitterrand, who kept the existence of a mistress and illegitimate daughter a secret for most of his 1981-95 presidency.

Is he nuts?

IIRC, Clapton said that Jagger did him a huge favor in getting Bruni out of his life, in retrospect.

1. She's a maneater, that one...
I guess Sarkozy misplaced his brain below his belt. Men often do that.

2. and she's not exactly an emotional low maintenance
type of girl, if I remember correctly. I just get the feeling Sarkozy is getting himself into something he -- and his Government -- may greatly regret later. Can you imagine him breaking it off with Carla who then runs to the Press with revengeful accounts of what really happens behind closed doors at the Palais?

3. 3 months and it's "serious"? good grief. Three months and you barely know each other.
Three months is still the goo-goo eyed, there are only the two of us in the whole universe cocoon phase.....

usually only adolescents talk of how "serious" a relationship is after such a relative nanosecond....

4. 3 months is almost a lifetime for celebrities
And like Bruni, Sarky is nothing more than a celebrity.

At least the French people are finally waking up to the nightmare they elected.

6. "A dramatic slide in polls"
Edited on Tue Jan-08-08 01:36 PM by downstairsparts
Who could have predicted such a thing a few months ago in the middle of all the Sarko euphoria?

Recall back in the fall when he pulled the plug on an interview, refused to answer TV (CBS?) interviewer's question about the break-up of his marriage with Cécilia. He got up from the interview and walked off. No questions on his private life permitted last year. Yet with the new year, the little man in the Rollex & Ray-Bans with the brand new super model looming over him wants "to break with a long tradition of French leaders keeping their love lives secret."

The people are starting to open their eyes, and what they see running the country ain't such a pretty sight.
