Rodney King shot, wounded near California home

LOS ANGELES (Reuters) - Rodney King, whose videotaped beating once made him an international symbol of police brutality, suffered minor injuries after getting hit by a shotgun blast, authorities in California said on Thursday.

An intoxicated King summoned officers to his home in Rialto, about 60 miles east of Los Angeles, on Wednesday night to report he had been shot, said Sgt. Don Lewis of the Rialto Police Department.

"He had some minor pepper wounds that looked like they were from bird shot," said Lewis, who described the injuries as "extremely minor."

Lewis said King told police the shooting took place while he was riding his bicycle in neighboring San Bernardino. King rode his bicycle home after the incident and it was not immediately clear who fired the shot, Lewis said.

"(King) and the whole house were very intoxicated and very uncooperative," Lewis said.

King was treated at a local hospital, and the investigation was turned over to San Bernardino police.

King's videotaped beating by Los Angeles police at the conclusion of a high-speed chase on March 3, 1991, caused an international furor amid charges of brutality and racism.

The acquittal of four officers in April 1992 touched off some of the worst urban riots in modern U.S. history -- causing more than 50 deaths, thousands of injuries and more than $1 billion in damage.

is known as the "Folsom Roll", a tatic used to assult police officers, they roll around till they can kick/trip an officer or guard then grab him and bite an ear or nose off, gouge eyes..etc.. he was attempting to assult a police officer. the cops did screw up, but it was because they hated the child molesting, drug dealing piece of shit..and were really tired of his crap

8. It is a cops job to enforce the law, not to dish out punishment.
He may have been a "child molesting, drug dealing piece of shit" but if you are posting on a board called "Democratic Underground" you should believe in the principle of presumption of innocence. When we start letting to cops determine who is guilty and how they will dish out punishment, we are no better than the republicans.

11. Are they completely certain
that Dickhead Cheney wasn't around? :)

Not to make light of the situation--all right, yeah, making complete light of the situation.

Fact is, L.A. certainly doesn't need another riot on its hands--I remember the original situation and the mess that was made. It was horrific, but it showed one main thing--that under a very thin veneer of civilization, race hatred and intolerance was brewing and boiling over. We know that racism is barely held in deep pockets of the South and other parts of the country, but we were all under the impression that L.A. had more going for it. With the ensuing shit following the Rodney King situation, we found out that was not true.

Thankgoodness that derelict didn't get tazed.

I'm against tazing and police beatings. King seems like the type of guy who would get the brunt of it...

15. ...and then he gets people here spewing unfounded rumors...
...about him being a child molester, and how rolling around on the ground while being beaten by cops somehow constitutes assault. :puke:

17. Rodney King has more to his record than that-
Edited on Thu Nov-29-07 10:42 PM by cryingshame
He was arrested again for spousal assault in 1999.

In 2001, he was ordered to undergo a year of drug treatment after pleading guilty to three counts of being under the influence of phencyclidine and of indecent exposure.

April 2003 he was recently hospitalized after he lost control of a car and crashed into a house. He was weaving in and out of traffic in his 2003 Ford Expedition at approximately 100 miles per hour and slammed into a utility pole, a chain-link fence and then the house, according to police officials.

On August 27, 2003, he was arrested again on similar charges as in 1991. It is alleged that King was speeding, ran a red light while under the influence of alcohol and failed to yield to police officers.
