Surprise Bush still popular on stump
Source: Politico.com

Despite voter unhappiness about the Iraq war, President Bush remains popular enough with Republicans that he has raised more money for the party this year than he had at the same point in the last election cycle.

His party’s presidential candidates do little to embrace the president, although they generally support his policies and have proposed few reversals. And this year’s crop of GOP congressional candidates is unlikely to say much about him. Indeed, the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee plans to make “Bush rubber stamp” one of its main attack lines in next year’s House races.

Nevertheless, Bush raised $63,552,155 for the Republican Party and candidates through Nov. 2, compared with $62,415,000 at the same point in 2005, the start of the last election cycle, according to figures the Republican National Committee provided to Politico.

It’s the big exception to the theory that Bush is unpopular and in the bunker: The party’s donors still flock to events he headlines.

1. Everyone within 5 miles of Bush loves him.
They're the only ones allowed to get that close.

3. Perhaps last time, he didn't need to raise so much. . .
since there were other Republicans still popular enough to draw donations as well, and the pool for those donations was considerably wider than it is today.

But now? They got bupkis . . . and a bumpkin who can still draw the rubes. It won't be enough . . .

5. I've got a stump in my front yard that I'd sharpen up to put * on it.
About 8 feet of red maple, remnants courtesy of a wind storm. I'd take the chain saw to it in a second to provide a nice seat for the idiot.

7. You donate with the president you have, not the president you wished you had
There's a lot of scared money pouring into Republican coffers as the GOP Gravy Train approaches its last stop. How much will pardons and amnesty legislation cost? Depends on the seriousness of the crimes committed. And Bush is the only one who gets to sign those lovely, lovely pardons, so write another check, Agnes, I don't care how looney tunes he is.

9. Duh.
The sort of people who rally for today's Republican candidates are by definition those who think he's dreamy--or at least not so bad.

In trying to claim that * is still popular, this story simply highlights his Potemkin presidency. Republican rallies are simply one of the last few places he can still count on being welcomed, even if the cheers are a bit muted these days.

10. Wait. You mean republicans pay bribes to get legislation passed?
I'm shocked. Shocked, I tell you.

That is all that this means.

11. I talked to a rePIG today who is not rich and thinks it just dandy
that the richest Americans got a tax cut during a time of what and she did not, also her brother is in Iraq. Just dandy. Everything is just fine here in America. Just fine.
These people do not vote on reality based issues. They are propagandized and probably crazy.

14. I knew all those sorry ass repukes would come around again.
Those repukes may voice their displeasure, but they would vote for Capt. Asshole again given the chance.
