Representatives of governors join talks on nurses' strike

Representatives from Gov.-Elect Steve Beshear and West Virginia Gov. Joe Manchin joined officials from Appalachian Regional Healthcare and the Kentucky-West Virginia Nurses Association union in collective-bargaining discussions yesterday in Lexington.

Pat Tanner, chief negotiator for the union, requested that the representatives from the governors' offices issue a written, fact-finding report by Nov. 29 that proposes fair terms to end the strike.

"We are pleased with the events that happened today, and the company has shown some evidence of showing us some counterproposals," Tanner said. "We are hopeful there will be some movement."

In a press release, Lexington-based ARH President and Chief Executive Officer Jerry Haynes said the company is surprised that the union issued a release requesting the report while the meeting is still continuing.
