WASHINGTON (Reuters) - Low-income U.S. families planning to rely on a federal program to help pay expensive heating bills this winter are in jeopardy after President George W. Bush on Tuesday vetoed spending legislation that would have provided the financial assistance.

Bush rejected the compromise appropriations bill for the Departments of Labor, Health and Human Services, and Education, which also contained $2.4 billion in funding for the Low Income Home Energy Assistance Program, commonly known as LIHEAP.

...............

"Congress needs to cut out that pork, reduce the spending and send me a responsible measure that I can sign into law," Bush said.

In the same speech a few moments later, Bush also expressed his concern about high energy prices.

Reid: Even As War-Cost Estimates Climb, President Bush Again Vetoes America's Priorities At Home

Washington, DC—Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid made the following statement today after President Bush vetoed the Labor-HHS-Education appropriations bill:

“It is unfathomable that on the very day the Joint Economic Committee released a report finding the costs of the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan could reach $3.5 trillion at the expense of America’s priorities at home, President Bush has vetoed a Labor-HHS-Education bill that addresses many of those critical needs. The bipartisan, fiscally responsible bill he vetoed increases funding for programs to improve K-12 student performance, makes college more affordable, supports life-saving medical research and provides relief for families struggling with rising home heating costs. And it provides money for veterans’ employment programs, homeless veterans, and research to help those suffering from traumatic brain injuries.

“Democrats want to work together with the President to find a way forward to make critical investments in our country, but the President must come to the table in good faith. Until that time, we will work to override this veto because President Bush’s priorities are simply not those of the American people. We also hope Republicans, who initially overwhelmingly voted for this bill, will stand up to the President’s irresponsible veto and stand with the American people.”

6. They screwed up
the bill's language should have described the poor as rich. Bush would have doubled the amount. They need to change the program name to Low Tax Payer Home Energy Assistance Program. Heating a 20,000 square foot house can run up a big heating bill!

20. Yeh right!
Here in Maine global warming gave us 45 more days of warm weather..my tomatos ripened on the vine for a change!
It was 15 & 20 degrees at night this weekend, and only 20's during the day. Lulled into complacency I didn't pull my root veggies..........Sun I couldn't even hack them out with a sharp spade. Happy to say, it warmed up & rained and I got them out of the ground today........but it is down to 32 right now.
Come on up I have an extra shawl!

25. Since the corporatemediawhores
took over America and bushites' coup in 2000 with the help of the Felonious 5. bushites need that money earmarked for heating the poor elderly and the families who can't afford the high heating bills for more bombs. Iran is next and our poor are NOT going to stand in the way.

I'm just as pissed at the dem enablers who allow this to happen because they acquiesce to bushshit and wouldn't dream of Impeaching them to try and Stop it.

19. Oh swell!
It's been nice knowing you.....I guess i will just freeze to death in the next few weeks! I have NO OIL, I have too little money to buy oil, minimum purchase $157.00 for only 50 gallons. Getting by on my social security check has only been possible because my heat has been free the past several years.........I had to buy a new furnace in '96, ( living with lowgrade carbon monoxide for 2 1/2 months, because to turn off the heater completely, would have meant draining the pipes and living without water.) while it took 2 months to process a low interest loan. I slept in the back bdroom with towels under the door, and the window open in the front room to draw out the bad air from downstairs....... and then I had the house weatherized.. so it's tight!
Meanwhile the President of the American Lung Association was blathering publically about the dangers of C M poisoning ( I think somebody had just died) and how important it was to find and correct heater problems AT ONCE!

A friend just informed me...............that is next years funding that has been vetoed! I have been granted a year to live!

GET BEHIND IMPEACHMENT PLEASE, SUPPORT KUCINICH, Maybe I'll immigrate to Venezuela next summerbefore heating season!

I had a Venezuelan roomate for several months..back in '87. SHe was very lovely. a Veterinarian, trying to get a green card or a job...............had to have one of them to get the other...chicken egg situation ! SHe gave up and ewent on to Spain to join her brother finally. I wish I had been politically awre then. Their Father a high up in the army had sent the kids out of the country, preceeding a coup! I guess she was one of the elites, having competed her Veterinary studies at U of P. Is that when CHavez took charge?

33. The legacy of "Compassionate Conservatism"...
Edited on Wed Nov-14-07 01:21 AM by rasputin1952
I once read a line from someone far wiser than I, "A society can be judged by the way it treats the least of its members".

I have to say, as a society, we pretty well suck.

Not all of us that's for sure, but those that would relish the thought of our Northern neighbors freezing on cold winter nights, while going hungry and without adequate clothing or care for the diseases that tend to run rampant during the colder months, like influenza and pneumonia. Well, if there is a hell, these compassionate conservatives found one of the warmest spots.

"Compassionate Conservatism" has brought us a debt that exceeds $9trillion.

Citizens that border on starving in ever increasing numbers.

Children that cannot get an education worth a hoot.

A war that may carry on for a decade.

A madman named bin-Laden still running around, (when a troop of Brownies could have caught him by now).

An economy bordering on collapse.

The gutting of the EPA, Forest Service, OSHA, and other agencies that actually help the country.

Destroyed our credibility around the world.

Brought back torture, and has tried to legitimize it.

Came close to dismantling the Constitution.

Dismantled many protections under the Bill of Rights.

Removed many safety nets that the poor rely upon to just survive.

The list can go on for pages...add your own.

If there is one good thing that has come out of the bush cheney years, it is that the neo-con movement is just about dead, and the GOP won't hold power again for a couple of generations.

35. The idiot's solution: if you're cold go to the emergency room, problem solved
If all the people the idiot has told to go to the emergency for help did show up it would be a disaster for those people with immediate life threating emergencies. But that's the thing about idiots, they can never understand the consequences of their idiotic behavior.
