And like that ...

Just when it seemed an additional $50,000, possibly five times that amount on top of it and 44 more minutes of face time on national television were headed his way, a Canadian composer stormed back and authored the most bittersweet of symphonies for Chris Mazurek, abruptly ending his impressive run on "Jeopardy!" in stunning fashion.

Not long after the halfway point in his quest to advance to the final round in the game show's "Tournament of Champions," it all seemed so promising for the assistant psychology professor from Columbia College. A run through a few Middle Names put Mazurek in prime position to move on to the two-episode final that could've netted him a cool quarter of a million dollars.

He kick-started his rise early in Double Jeopardy! in the first of three "TOC" semifinals when he uncovered the final Daily Double under the aforementioned category and wagered the same $1,200 the answer normally would've been worth. Correctly responding to the clue of "A pioneering 1950s journalist: Roscoe" with "Who is Edward R. Murrow?" and following that with two more successful Middle Names queries put Mazurek at $10,000.

Soon after, when opponents Susan Mitchell and Doug Hicton fell to $1,400 and -$1,000, respectively, it seemed as if Mazurek had victory well in hand. However, Hicton — a composer originally from Regina, Saskatchewan — then began his remarkable dawn from the dead, punctuated by his bolt out of negative territory with a head-shaking, swiftly spit-out sweep of 2007 National Spelling Bee Words.

I tend to be Jeopardy Wonk, shouting out the answers (questions) alone in the house over my glass of Pinot. Thought Doug was cool from the beginning, because my mother was born in Saskatchewan and I'm a musician as well. Shoulda known he'd be a liberal.

Ask if if Alex Trebek is as pompous as he can appear to be. Actually, he has gotten better over the years, especially about the way he used to treat his women contestants.

45. Hey this is cool. My mom was on Jeopardy way back in 1974

when the dollar amounts were pretty meager compared to today. She didn't win but got some neat door prizes.
At lunch with fellow contestants they tried to guess Nixon's fate (this was February 1974) and my mom correctly predicted he would resign late summer- before September. Smart woman that mother of mine.
Jeopardy is a good show, it takes real brains to win it.
