Schumer, Feinstein back Mukasey
Source: Baltimore Sun

Looks like Michael Mukasey will be the next Attorney General after all, many Democrats' misgivings about his unwillingness to declare waterboarding illegal notwithstanding.

A pair of key Senate Democrats, Diane Feinstein, of California, and Charles Schumer, of New York, announced this afternoon that they'll vote for Mukasey, giving him the votes he needs to win approval of the Judiciary Committee.

This can be looked at as a call made on the merits, but politically, the nods from Schumer and Feinstein also can be interpreted as meaning that Democrats still haven't figured out how to address issues like torture without appearing to be soft on national security.

2. Feinstein is just like a Republican in so many ways.
She thinks it's OK to have an Attorney General who will allow Bush to continue to rape the country.

And Southwick just hated gay people, so he'll be OK as well.

And then there's all that nasty money her husband made, which was likely a huge conflict of interest on Diane's part.

If we catch her cruising for sex in some airport ladies room, the circle will be complete...

10. ah yes.......but what the hell else have they done lately?
....very little in taking back the country. I am sick to death of most of the Democrats in Congress NOT producing a united front against Bush. It's time they put up or shut up. I stand by my statement that the lot of them are spineless sacks of shit...and I'll add that most of them have their thumbs stuck up their collective asses as well.

WTF don't they call Bush on his invocation of 'we're at war and national security is the end all beat all' speech????

Do you not think that if the Democrats of Congress stood together shoulder to shoulder and told the country that Bush is full of shit and that he has turned Americans into blithering pansies thinking some sort of attack is around every fucking corner that some of mainstream America might not finally wake up and realize they had been duped into this mess of an Administration?

Yes I sound harsh, but I am fed fucking up with politicians dillydallying around while the whole country goes down the proverbial toilet. The man and his entire administration has ruined the country and I don't really think at this point it can be fixed.

5. Bush attorney general nominee gets key Democratic support
Source: CNN

Two Democratic senators said Friday they would vote for President Bush's nominee for attorney general, Michael Mukasey, hours after the chairman of the Judiciary Committee announced his opposition to the nominee.

Sens. Dianne Feinstein of California and Charles Schumer of New York announced they would support the retired federal judge from New York.

Feinstein and Schumer are members of the Senate Judiciary Committee, which is scheduled to vote on the Mukasey nomination Tuesday.

If all the Republican members of the committee also vote for Mukasey, which is expected, his nomination will go before the full Senate. A leading Democrat, speaking on condition of anonymity, said Wednesday Mukasey is likely to be confirmed if his nomination passes the Judiciary Committee.

Schumer had praised the nomination of Mukasey, a retired federal judge, as a consensus candidate when the president announced Mukasey as his choice to replace former Attorney General Alberto Gonzales. Gonzales gave up the post in September.

54. When I think about Ahnold sitting in Sacramento it makes
me sick, too. Then I think that's the same office Reagan occupied 40 years ago, and realize that Californians are easily buffaloed by glib actors. (Of course Reagan was successful on a national level, too, so Americans in general are pretty easily sold snake oil.)

On another thread I commented about a research paper my 9th grader has to write about the future. I suggested she write about the very real threat to American Democracy we're facing now, and her not-so-bright teacher told her she has to stick to mainstream, read "corporate," sources for her information. The woman isn't smart enough to realize that the "mainstream" media is a huge part of the aforementioned threat. We are, indeed, down the rabbit hole.

57. Thanks! That's more helpful than you may realize.
I still get angry thinking about how my dad voted for Reagan. He himself can't believe it. But your post is very helpful to me. It's not like we've suddenly changed into idiots. Although that may be true. Hmm. I'm really not awake this morning. So this is like typing through blurriness.

Today I am very discouraged. I sit here waiting on a seller's response to an offer I made on their land. And as I sit here wondering what life will yield, I can't help but think about how unhappy I am by America in general. As if some place to sit my body down will make a difference. Hmm. This isn't what you needed to hear. But it's part of the whole equation. I'm not happy here. No matter if I have the 100 acres with an ocean view or not. If I have neighbors who are not aware, it brings the whole experience down a level. We're a group of very unsophisticated people. And I'm talking about people like my dad. He was integral in the development of the personal computer back in the early days. And yet, Reagan with his phony humility convinced people he was something other than what he was. And the same thing is happening with the environment. People are still asleep. This is why I was furious when I saw this clown Swarzwhatever acting like a child on tv. "Everything is happy!", while the houses were still burning. An ignorant fool. One who was being sued by Cruz Bustamonte for illegal activity. Anyways. This should teach me not to reply when I feel like I have a head full of lead.

I want an intelligent country. Not just engineers. Not just journalists. People who are well rounded. People who care about others. That last one is probably the biggest one. It means we stop driving and start riding bikes. Yes. Believe it or not, that is what I said. It sounds bizarre to most people.

So it's both good and bad that we haven't changed in some ways. I guess I'm pessimistic. I think we should have made real progress, given where we came from. The Summer of Love just vaporized into suits and ties and Lexus cars.

Sorry. I really think I'm talking to myself, and not replying. It's probably considered rude. But I had to get this out. I feel pretty hopeless. When you've got nothing, you have everything to look forward to. When you've got everything, you realize that there really is nothing left. And that's kind of where I am. Wanting people to stop looking for something, and start doing what is right.

Sheesh. I guess it's time to go wake up. :)

56. It is imperative for the Democratic Party to figure out how to get bastard
Democrats like Schumer and DiFi out of the party. The Party will stick with them because they are incumbents and guaranteed reelection.
To survive as a free nation the Party needs to find replacements for the turn-coats like Lieberman (to late) and "the torture two".

The problem is that when the voters go to the ballots in Calif and NY they will find Torture Chuck and Water-board Diane their only democratic choices. The Party needs to figure out a strategy to replace renegade members.

Is anyone shocked by this? I'm not.

After Greenspan quit, Schumer was the one going around, "oh we've GOT to bring in a guy that continues the same monetary policies as Greenspan," or something really similar. I'm not surprised that the same guy who said that supports a guy who clearly thinks torture is cool.
