Stephen Colbert running for president
Source: CNN

WASHINGTON (CNN) — He made a splash with a surprise presidential announcement Tuesday, but can Comedy Central host Stephen Colbert actually get on the primary ballots in South Carolina?

The answer is yes, although it could get pricey.

The fee to be considered for the Democratic ballot is $2,500, while it’s a hefty $35,000 to gain admittance into the Republican primary.

Colbert has indicated he will seek to appear on each party's ballot and the South Carolina Secretary of State's office confirms a candidate is allowed to run in both primaries.

But it remains to be seen if the State Democratic Party's Executive Committee, whose approval Colbert needs to get on their ballot, will vote to certify a candidate who is also running in the GOP race. The rules state the candidate must be "actively campaigning" for the Democratic primary.

Wouldn't it be amazing if he won South Carolina for either party? But I wonder what he would do if he actually were nominated?

2. It would be brilliant if he won the Republican primary.
Of course, the electors from that state would simply be bought off and would switch their votes to whichever actor or criminal the rest of them choose. But, on the off chance that some part of the electoral process is not completely criminalized yet, Colbert taking South Carolina's pro-17th Century electoral votes would be the equivalent of writing Utah and Alaska out of the election entirely.

I'm not so sure about the Democratic end of things. Yeah, South Carolina is safe for the Klan, gay-hating, war, and Jeebus, but ensuring that it's completely safe for the GOP would simply free up more dirty money for more dirty tricks elsewhere.

9. Actually, I like the majority of SC.
It's just that the part I like doesn't vote, or isn't counted.

4. Wow. $35,000 vs. $2,500?
That's rather amazing. Not terribly surprising, but it still caught me by the boo-boo

6. ABC news did a story on this last night.
Charlie Gibson put on his stern face and wondered aloud if this kind of thing diminishes the "grave seriousness" of presidential primaries.

:spray:

Really, Charlie? Have you seen much footage from the campaign trail lately?

17. Would he appoint Officer Judy as Secretary of Homeland Security?
Come to think of it, I'd feel about as secure as I feel now. Probably more so.

11. Who's his running mate? Colbert/KamaAina '08!
"Hey, at least the other guy's tan, rested and ready!"

No ticket in all the history of presidential politics has had quite the geographical balance of Colbert/KamaAina. Whether Colbert is to be considered a South Carolinian or New Yorker, the Colbert/KamaAina ticket spans five full time zones and nearly 5,000 miles. That's five times as long as most of those other pipsqueak countries even are!

One thing Colbert will be looking for in a running mate is someone who will not seek to draw attention to himself, and thus away from The Future Leader Of The Free World. And who better than someone who posts frequently in our Asperger/PDD group?

And most importantly, people have trouble pronouncing my seven-letter last name, too. :-) So get out to the polls and do your patriotic duty! No, no, I mean vote! :P

14. Alas, I am out of the running :(
I cannot stand Nacho Cheese Doritos. :puke:

Now if it had been the original Toasted Corn, that would've been another thing altogether.

But I cannot, in good conscience, campaign across this great land on behalf of cheese. See you in '12.

16. The Habanero Doritos are pretty good
The first time I had them, they weren't spicy. They're spicy now. I think people complained.

This isn't totally farfetched, folks -- he did have a "be my new black friend" contest a while back!
