Bush due in Sydney for APEC amid anti-war protests
By Michael Perry

SYDNEY (Reuters) - After a lightning visit to Iraq, U.S. President George W. Bush arrives in Australia on Tuesday where he can expect anti-Iraq war protests as he attends an Asia-Pacific leaders' summit in Sydney.

The majority of Australians are opposed to the U.S.-led Iraq war, despite their government's full support and Australian troops serving in Iraq.

Bush is due to arrive in Sydney on Tuesday night, a few hours after a "Stop Bush 2007" rally in front of the city's main railway station.

Several protests are planned for the Asia-Pacific Economic Co-operation forum (APEC) week, culminating in a major march by the "Stop Bush Coalition" on Saturday, when the 21 Asia-Pacific leaders hold a summit at the Sydney Opera House.

Protests mark Bush arrival in Australia

by Neil Sands 57 minutes ago

SYDNEY (AFP) -

......An established anti-war group called the Stop Bush Coalition called a small "unwelcoming ceremony" in Sydney to kick off a series of protests culminating in a march by up to 20,000 people on Saturday.

Police have launched a court battle against the march, saying it poses a serious security threat if it is allowed to proceed past the US consulate in the city centre.

"Our intelligence tells us there is an intent to act violently," said state Police Commissioner Andrew Scipione.

Some 3,500 police and 1,500 counter-terrorism and special forces soldiers have been deployed to maintain security, while parts of the city have been blocked off by a 5.5-kilometre (3.4-mile)-long steel and concrete fence.

4. Politicians and cops are doing their best to talk up the possible violence.
After all, they've paid $700,000 for a new water cannon - they've got
to find an excuse to use it. It's a cops' wet dream (pardon the pun).

What they're really about is trying to frighten people into staying away
from Saturday's march, but I don't think it's going to work. Too many
people now can see through Howard and his lies, and they've taken the
phone off the hook.
