Mattel to recall more Chinese-made toys
Source: Associated Press

NEW YORK - Less than two weeks after Mattel Inc. recalled 1.5 million Chinese-made toys because of lead paint, the toy industry is bracing for another blow that could give parents more reason to rethink their purchases just before the critical holiday shopping season.

Mattel is set to announce the recall of another toy involving a different Chinese supplier as early as Tuesday, according to three people close to the matter who spoke on condition of anonymity because of the sensitivity of the situation.

Details of the latest recall were not immediately available, but one of the three people said the toy is being recalled because its paint may contain excessive amounts of lead.

Scott Wolfson, a spokesman for the Consumer Product Safety Commission, declined to comment. Mattel officials did not immediately return phone calls.

A new Mattel action would mark the latest in a string of recalled products from China, ranging from faulty tires to tainted toothpaste. With more than 80 percent of toys sold worldwide made in China, toy sellers are nervous that shoppers will shy away from their products.

1. I bought a few shares of that stock for $11 in the mid 90s
Looks like they want it back at that price ASAP.

And if that's what it takes to back off the criminally unsafe Chinese crap, so be it.

3. So - I wonder if it is still cheaper to produce in China vs US workers...
the costs of these recalls ... and the cost to the companies' reputations must be amassing. Good thing so many US manufacturers closed shop and moved to low (or no) regulation countries with cheap, cheap labor forces. :sarcasm:

4. Now hurry, Americans...
Run out and jump into your FOREIGN cars, drive to Wal-Mart and buy more CHEAP DEADLY UNSAFE IMPORTED FOREIGN crap for your homes, to clothe your children, and to feed your families.

And then be sure to complain when you can't find a decent job with benefits, or your job gets outsourced, or you get your ass fired or laid off. Americans are shopping themselves out of jobs, and they're too damn stupid to figure it out!

8. CNN this morning had a segment on children's jewelry.
Too much of it has unacceptable levels of lead. If a young child should swallow the items, the child would die or have serious health problems.

The stuff tested was from China.

10. I subscribe
to this service

http://www.feedblitz.com/

They notify me of wonderful toys for children made from natural materials. They even notified me of baby bottles, Born Free, that are BPA free. Anyone who needs to give a gift to a new baby or a child should explore this service. Nothing is made in China.

11. I'd like to know why these scumbags don't catch these problems
in pre-delivery testing instead of doing fucking recalls. I hope someone sues them for negligence, fucking scumbags. Maybe if they have kids who play with their toys they'd get it.

15. Well ...
To a large extent, the toy companies have been trusting their manufacturers to do sufficient testing. There would be conflict of interest concerns if said companies were testing their own merchandise for acceptability. That would be well and good, except the Chinese companies weren't doing adequate testing, and the toy companies apparently weren't bothering to check on that.

12. Mattel Recalls More China-Made Toys
Source: NPR/AP

Day to Day, August 14, 2007 · Toy maker Mattel has announced another round of toy recalls. It's the second time this month that the company has withdrawn toys made in China. Tuesday's announcment covers some toys that contain lead paint, and some have small magnets that can be swallowed. Don Mays of the Consumers Union talks with James Hattori.

Toy maker Mattel Inc. on Tuesday issued a recall for 9 million toys made in China because they contain magnets that can be dislodged and swallowed, or they may contain lead paint.

The recall includes 7.3 million play sets, including Polly Pocket dolls and Batman action figures, and 253,000 Sarge brand cars that have lead paint. The 2½-inch, 1-inch high car looks like a military jeep.

Nancy Nord, acting chairman of the U.S. consumer Product Safety Commission, said no injuries have been reported with any of the products involved in the recall.

14. I just tore into
...a damned right wing apologist over this crap. There is a guy that delivers office supplies and stuff where I work. He's a big Bushbot and "pro-capitalist" in spite of working at a crappy $7-8 an hour job. He usually has some cute RW radio talking point and I usually humorously put him in his place. Well, not today...

This morning I was, once again, going through a list of recalled toys trying to find out if my daughter had been poisoned when he came in. He asked what I was doing and I told him. He made a clucking noise with his tongue and remarked what a shame it was that American businesses had been "run out of the country" by regulations and high labor costs. That's when I lost it.

I jumped up and shook my finger under his nose and asked him why the hell every right wing asshat in this country thinks it is the government's job to protect us from the damn terrorists no matter what the cost but gods help us should the govt protect my child from being poisoned by her own toys!! I went on to tell him that he could go fuck himself if he honestly thought that the health, well being and maybe the very life of MY CHILD should be placed on an altar of sacrifice for nothing more that the profits of some wealth-addicted Wall Street aristocrats.

He scurried his little ass out of here pretty quick after that....
