Top US House Republican (Tom DeLay) opposes drug import bill

WASHINGTON, July 22 (Reuters) - The House Republican leader said on Tuesday he was "working hard" to defeat a bill set for a vote this week that would allow imports of cheaper drugs from Canada and certain other foreign countries.

House Majority Leader Tom DeLay, a Texas Republican, said the Republican leadership had made the commitment to hold a vote on the bill but "there was no commitment to pass it."

"I'm working hard to defeat it," DeLay told his weekly news briefing. He said the "horrible" bill would import price controls on drugs.

The legislation does have significant support in the House and may well pass despite DeLay's opposition.

This bill is good for the consumer but bad for big pharmaceutical companies. It really is that simple, hard to spin it any other way. Now I know all of us know exactly whose side Delay is on but hopefully this will illustrate it more clearly to the average American. I hope the Dems in Texas make lots of hay from this one.
