Wolfowitz to Resign This Afternoon? (ABC News Blotter)
Source: ABC News

World Bank officials say the bank's board is completing an "exit strategy" that will allow World Bank President Paul Wolfowitz to resign this afternoon and "still save some face" over the issue of his efforts to seek a promotion and pay raise for his girlfriend at the bank.

The officials say the bank's board will accept Wolfowitz's resignation but will also acknowledge that the World Bank's Ethics Committee bears "some responsibility" for giving him bad advice on the issue of his girlfriend.

The decision is likely today, officials say, because Wolfowitz had been scheduled to leave tonight for a European trip.

German Development Minister Heidemarie Wieczorek-Zeul said yesterday, "He would do the bank and himself a great service if he resigned." The German said Wolfowitz would not be welcome at an Africa forum the bank is holding next week in Berlin should he refuse to resign.

They told him to take care of it properly and he took care of it in a sick egregious way and they simply should never have turned their backs for even a second. So it's partly their fault.

WASHINGTON — Embattled World Bank President Paul Wolfowitz is negotiating an agreement to resign, according to an official familiar with the talks.

His departure would include an acknowledgment from the bank that he doesn't bear sole responsibility for the controversy surrounding a generous pay package for his girlfriend, the official said.

The negotiations were taking place as the bank's board resumed deliberations over Wolfowitz's fate this afternoon.

The official said Wolfowitz wanted the bank to accept some responsibility for conflicts of interest cited against him by a special bank panel. The official spoke on condition of anonymity because of the delicate state of the negotiations.

It was not clear whether the bank's 24-member board would accept Wolfowitz's terms.

47. What part of "You're fired" do these people not understand?
Let's say I'm working for a local bank, and I'm sleeping with a coworker who is NOT my wife. Then I help my mistress get a new job with a substantial pay raise. Then I get caught doing all this by the bank's board of directors, and my indiscretion is spread across ALL the local newspapers. What would be my fate?

1) Immediate termination, with a chance to pack my things and politely leave.
2) Immediate termination, with a friendly escort out of the building by security.
3) Immediate termination, with an armed escort out of the building by security.
4) Immediate termination, with my removal from the facility aided by local law enforcement.
5) None of the above, since I'm a Bush crony.

I can't believe that Wolfowitz actually gets to dictate the terms of his firing. This is just crazy.

60. Wolfowitz works on resignation deal
Source: Bangkok Post

By Tony Czuczka

Washington (dpa) - World Bank directors and the United States are working on a deal that could lead to bank President Paul Wolfowitz's departure as early as Thursday, a bank official said.

A proposed deal would include an admission by the World Bank that its bureaucracy shares blame for the ethics scandal that engulfed Wolfowitz, said the official, who spoke on condition of anonymity. In return, the former US deputy defence secretary would leave the aid agency.

"We're looking at reaching an agreement that avoids a vote (on the 24-member World Bank board) and that offers him wording he can accept so he resigns," the official said.

The US board representative pledged to offer a "practical solution," but asked for more time Wednesday, the bank official said. The US proposal could come when the board resumes deliberations Thursday, the official said.

The delay suggests that US President George W. Bush's administration is negotiating with Wolfowitz to prod him toward departure, after the White House this week appeared to soften its support for him.
