Tainted Pet Food Linked to Indiana Chickens
Source: Associated Press

(04-30) 17:36 PDT WASHINGTON, (AP) --

Chicken feed in some farms in Indiana contained byproducts from pet food manufactured with contaminated wheat gluten imported from China, two federal agencies said Monday.

--
An estimated 30 broiler poultry farms and eight breeder poultry farms in Indiana received contaminated feed in early February and fed it to poultry within days of receiving it, the agencies said. Other farms will probably be identified as having received contaminated feed, they added.

All the broilers believed to have been fed contaminated products have been processed, while the breeders are under voluntary hold by flock owners, the agencies said.

The FDA and USDA said the likelihood of human illness from eating chicken fed the contaminated product is very low. With no evidence of harm to humans, no recall of poultry products processed from these animals was being issued, the agencies said.

Humans would likely die slower than cats. This is inexcusable.

2. What does this mean? "contained byproducts from pet food"
Do you think that's a clever way around saying they used the recalled pet food as feed like they did with the pigs we heard about just last week?

7. No the chickens were fed the garbage from pet food manufacturing
The pet food itself, as we all know now, being the garbage from human food processing..

And in most cases the chicken litter (the leftover food and the feces = the garbage of the garbage of the garbage) is fed back to cows who then go on to become hamburger, steak, and pet food.

Garbage in, garbage out.

12. Its just as bad as them using the pet food itself as feed it would seem.
This could conceivably contaminate cows from the chicken litter fed to them that may be contaminated. My God, this whole system of ours is so screwed up. The FDA needs to be overhauled completely with the goal of serving the public interests, not corporate interests, and they to stop food imports from China immediately.

29. And probably can't even be redeemed. Newt's Contract on America opposed
our signing the Kyoto Accords in the early 90s because China and India wouldn't. He said it would affect our (U.S.) "manufacturing." Fast forward 15 years later and what does China NOT manufacture?

We need to start making our own goods, buying locally, and buying only what we absolutely need for the sake of the planet. There's a ton of great used stuff and most of us don't even utilize what we have. It is liberating NOT to buy anything unless it absolutely enhances one's life. Building up savings instead of debt is a survival trait in this society.

Imagine how the American auto industry could have responded if there was an incentive via the Kyoto Accords? Instead, they went with SUVs--cheap to make, big profit, and the biggest expense was advertising and marketing them to the public. Now Detroit is struggling and Japanese cars have to save us.

37. About the automobile
I bet it wouldn't be too difficult to find some incredible models/plans out there made by high school and college kids due to the simulation programs that we have availalble. We can still come out of this if we go back to the days of Xerox and the PARC complex, and find a way to rewrite the laws to give a corporation the ability to hold onto some of the capital earned from ideas that they help provide a forum for research.

40. If your furbabies are cats, make sure to give them some organ meat
like liver or heart. And if you're cooking their chicken, please give them taurine supplements as well because cooking destroys the taurine. Cats also need a calcium supplement if they're not getting raw bone, otherwise they can suffer from secondary hyperparathryoidism, which can lead to spontaneous fractures, seizures and, ultimately, death.

I have been making my own cat food, and like you, I can't stand to think that even so, I'm not protecting them from contaminated meat.

What brand of chicken? Why are they not telling us this? I know, because they don't want the brand in question to lose money, but when are they going to level with us? And why the hell isn't any of this being covered by the MSM anymore?

19. You can't. That's how they keep you buying tainted food.
Some vegetables are labeled. I have bought lettuce and carrots labeled California.

Sometimes, there are little stickers on the tomatoes. I have seen Canada and Mexico on those stickers.

Do your best. I'm trying not to buy any food that isn't labeled.

As far as ingredients in packaged food, I think it is hopeless. There's no way of finding out the source of all those ingredients.

13. The same reason they wouldn't announce the pet food companies that tested positive for melamine
nor name the hog farms. It was California officals that named two farms in CA. the FDA won't name names.

As for why this isn't being covered is that the MSM is owned by mega corporations who undoubtedly own these food operations. Why expose your own products as toxic?

14. I was a kid with the Tiananmen Square Massacre ocurred I was watching tv when the screen went blank
because the Chinese gov took over the US tv broadcast. I watched and waited to see what my government would do. Then a spokeswoman for bush1 said that they would not let this mass murder come between the US and China. I was in shock because I actually thought back then that my Government was better than that. Before that I had a vague dislike of bush because my parents did not approve him. after that I had a personal reason to hate the man for standing down when an atrocity was committed.

So I am with you - why does America buy anything from that nation? Why do we continue to enrich that government who kills political dissidents, that has no labor laws, has no environmental laws, that allows it's own people to be poisoned by industry by the thousands? Why do we continue to enrich a nation that already holds the second largest amount of our national debt - contining to put us in the hands of a hostile foreign power? bah.

48. The GOP said that we'd bring democracy to China by doing business
with them, but it turned out that Communism and Capitalism are completely compatible. In fact, the GOP now wants to imulate them! Check out your discription:

why does America buy anything from that nation? Why do we continue to enrich that government who kills political dissidents, that has no labor laws, has no environmental laws, that allows it's own people to be poisoned by industry by the thousands?

The neocons aspire to this. They're turning the US into a third world nation so our workforce will be as compliant - I mean competitive - as China's.

Skittles contain no harmful Chinese by products - and all the currently established minimum health needs for an average adult - Just make sure you eat all the colors equally (And does anyone know why they took the green M&M's out of the mix - unlike the other M&M colors, they contained glutathione! an important amino acid that helps a person de-toxify)

If you tire of filtered water, I recommend Beck's Beer - it is brewed according to the German Food purity laws of 1548 (or is it, 1648?)

My guess is that there are a lot more than just 38.

26. Geez, maybe if someone tells the FDA that women might use this melamine crap for birth control
Edited on Mon Apr-30-07 11:16 PM by impeachdubya
they'll get their act together and try to prevent it from getting in our food.

Otherwise, the glassy-eyed Jesus drunk goons which Bush has put in charge over there probably won't give a shit.

32. That's it! We'll just start a rumor that contaminated Chinese food can cause abortions.
That'll stop it QUICK!

53. Can't find out if CDC, FDA - ANYONE is checking those who consumed tainted pork or chicken
They COULD track down those who bought the tained pork and chicken. take blood and urine samples - check kidney function to make sure it isn't heading for acute or chronic renal failure, check for melamine & cyanuric acid etc. If they actually gave a damn they would be loooking.

42. So why should we believe anything from boooosh's FDA and USDA?
It's probably stacked with big agri-business lobbyists who couldn't care less about the public's food supply. It really sucks to have lost all faith in your own government because it's so unbelievably corrupt. :-(

45. Excuse me!??
"With no evidence of harm to humans, no recall of poultry products processed from these animals was being issued, the agencies said."

So......where is the testing on the LONG-TERM affects of melanine contamination on humans? The actual clinical trials?

49. And the assurance from the FDA is supposed to make us feel
we are safe if these chickens enter the food distribution chain. My daughter, son-in-law and grandchildren live in Indiana. Am I to be assured they and everyone else in Indiana will not eat this contaminated chicken? Sure.

I'm waiting for the next report from:

55. Are we going to see an increase in the number of vegetarians now?
Well we could eat poisoned spinach I guess. That's just as bad. But for heaven's sake, don't eat anything with a face on it!
