Who Won? S.C. Democratic Debate Poll Results
Source: WYFF-TV

Who won? According to polling conducted immediately after Thursday's debate, it depends a great deal on who you ask.

Overall, Sen. Barack Obama emerged as the winner in tonight's debate among the eight Democratic candidates for President, according to a SurveyUSA poll of 403 South Carolina debate watchers.

The polling also indicated that almost a third of South Carolina's adults watched the debate.

Obama was selected as the winner by 31 percent of those who said they watched the debate. Sen. Hillary Clinton finished in 2nd place, picked as the winner by 24 percent of viewers.

1. Interesting, the pundits were saying Hillary all the way
The voters sampled didn't think so.

Obama got huge support from African Americans and also gained among Republicans and Independents as did Edwards. Clinton did well with women but not so well among independents.

17. Maybe nationwide she won, but this poll was just for SC residents.
We don't have a primary here in Ky, so I have no dog in this race. After the primaries I will support the winner.

3. I would venture to
say the Obama supporters are making good use of their high speed internet. uh huh....getting to the sites that offer the usual un-scientific polling and checking that box, Who won?
Yes, I watched and listened and heard what was said. I would say many folks that like Obama cannot hear him. They listen well and he comes across well when on the campaign trail, but in last nights debate, (if you can call it that) he showed how lacking he is in this type setting. Obama fared well, do not get me wrong but the one person that came across as poised, knowledgable and had a command of the stage was HRC....Oh, I know..geez..
I will say this one negative about HRC. She needs to work on her oratory skills when addressing huge crowds when on the campaign....Just like Obama needs to work on his skills in a debate setting....
I do thank you...

5. This was a scientific poll with a random sample
It was not a web-based poll.

4. Interesting that ...
81% of the Hispanics said that Kucinich won the debate. And although the overall numbers show most people didn't say he won the debate, only about 10% thought he lost the debate.

11. Yeah, the comparison to flipside numbers for "who lost?" are more interesting, IMO
Looks like the homestate crowd didn't give Edwards the win, but he got the smallest "who lost?" numbers.

22. 403 responded, 2% were hispanic = 8 hispanic voters
And none of them picked Richardson. The sample is just too small to really reflect hispanic preference.

7. No one won
No one lost; a big photo op lite
Obama certainly didn't win, nor did Hillary, unless you count not flubbing as winning, which many of the Hillary pundits counted. "you worked for a hedge fund" to Edwards was an asshole question. I worked for AT&T, so what ? Did they expect him to apologize for working?

...a big photo op lite...(with)...asshole question(s)...

A debate with eight people? A better use of MSNBC's time would have been half-hour interviews with each of the candidates. And I wish one of them would have asked Williams why he was asking such asshole questions--the $400 haircut? Biden a gaffe machine?

9. Obviously, this debate was pretty unremarkable
Edited on Fri Apr-27-07 03:47 PM by BlueStater
In this day and age, debates don't really change people's minds about a candidate unless they blow it really badly. Cleary Chimpy lost a few votes after his ass-raping by Kerry in the first debate in '04.

12. Interesting points I noted...
81% of hispanics went for Kucinich 0% for Richardson.

Obama's skewed more conservative than Clinton's.

Both Pro-Life and Pro-choice voters prefered Obama?

Republicans and Independents both prefer Obama.

Older people didn't like Obama as much.

Strange women didn't vote for Obama more..;)

21. Sorry, but no...
...the good senator hasn't the experience or gravitas yet. He may later on as he gains more experience but he is just not 'ready for prime time' yet.

18. The punditry anointed Hillary as the winner. Why the disconnect?
I don't think that anyone "lost" the debate, but I think that the disconnect between the pundits (remember Tweety calling Hillary Presidential) and the polls that shortly followed may have little to do with how the candidates did in the debate but more as who the public has turned itself off from.

I suspect a significant percentage of the voters have already made their minds up about Hillary, based upon her record and performance, and nothing she says or does will change their minds about her. To them, Hillary will never "win" anything.

19. This poll only includes South Carolinans
I'd be curious if a national poll would be similar.

23. I bet in terms of campaign boosts, Gavel won.
A lot more people know his name than otherwise would -- purely because of the impression he made in this debate.
