President Clinton: Gonzales Should ‘Step Aside’
Source: Thinkprogress

In an interview with CNN’s Larry King tonight, President Bill Clinton says the best thing Alberto Gonzales can do for the President he has “served so loyally is to step aside”:

I understand why President Bush is reluctant to let him go. I don’t think he ought to force the President to fire him. He had a long and good run here. And if what I saw coming out of Sen. Specter today and others is right, and there’s a lot of opposition to him in the Congress. These cases raise real troubling questions — these U.S. Attorney firings. The best thing he could do for this president that he served so loyally is to step aside.

The Big Dog doesn't usually jump into the fray this way, but if you ask him a question - most of the time you will get an answer, even if you don't agree with it because of his general tendency to put things as diplomatically as possible.

But His statement echoes those may be Sen. Coburn which he made today directly to Alberto Gonzales during his appearance before the Senate.

I believe you ought to suffer the consequences that these others have suffered, and I believe the best way to put this behind us is your resignation.

But of course, Gonzo won't be resigning and from all indications the White House won't be asking for his resignation based on the comments by White House Spokesperson Dana Perino.

President Bush was pleased with the Attorney General’s testimony today. After hours of testimony in which he answered all of the Senators’ questions and provided thousands of pages of documents, he again showed that nothing improper occurred. He admitted the matter could have been handled much better, and he apologized for the disruption to the lives of the U.S. Attorneys involved, as well as for the lack of clarity in his initial responses. The Attorney General has the full confidence of the President, and he appreciates the work he is doing at the Department of Justice to help keep our citizens safe from terrorists, our children safe from predators, our government safe from corruption, and our streets free from gang violence.

Eventually the sad reality ahs to be reached that the only way to protect the nation from either Gonzales' deliberate malfeasances and bone-headed incompetence (depending on which version of his variable reality you subscribe too) is for his Impeachment and Removal by the Congress.

4. I think he is taking all this to save the President.
It is the only thing that would do it I think. I think he will support Bush to the end and I am sure Bush will not do the same. I sort of feel sorry for the man. The answer is right in front of us. 'I did it because my President wanted it done' but he has to look the fool to not say it.

5. The next AG would face very stiff hearings. This could lead to even more embarrassment for BA

3. Let's hope he stays on to finish out the term with this scandal hot throughout.
Yet another albatross around Bush's neck. I think that's the best realistic outcome we could hope for.

Impeachment and removal are not going to happen, considering the narrow majority we have. The Republicans are only speaking up publicly because it's a cable news hot story; to save face in the court of public opinion. They are actually totally in favor of every corrupt thing Bush does. Just 5 months ago they were giving Bush whatever he wanted while they were in power.

Plus, I don't know of anything Bush has done anything that is ironclad, demonstrably illegal since he's been in office (at least anything that can be proven so under legal statutes). They are masters of doing the most blatantly corrupt, evil things bust still managing to stay within the gray area of the law.
