N.J. Governor Undergoes Another Operation
Sylwia Kapuscinski for The New York Times

Published: April 15, 2007
CAMDEN, N.J., April 14 — Gunshot wounds, stab wounds and other perils of urban life keep the trauma surgeons at Cooper University Hospital here busy. Of the roughly 2,500 patients that the trauma center treats every year, hospital officials say, 10 percent to 15 percent are crime victims.

Governor Corzine underwent a second operation here Saturday morning, an hourlong procedure to clean the wound around his badly broken thigh bone. The hospital’s director of orthopedic trauma, Dr. Robert F. Ostrum, declared the surgery to be “routine and uneventful.” “He’s doing better than we had expected,” Dr. Ostrum said, adding that he believed the governor would recover fully.

“He has been awakened, answers simple yes-or-no answers about pain and will perform things for us to demonstrate that his brain is working properly,” Dr. Ross said. Nonetheless, he added, the medication has kept Mr. Corzine in a state in which “he is not aware of his surroundings.”

The governor, who apparently was not wearing a seat belt while riding in the front passenger seat of a Chevrolet Suburban, broke his left femur in two places, as well as ribs, his breastbone, collarbone and a lower vertebra.

1. So maybe the care is good there
if they specialize in trauma victims.

I'd been wondering-- Camden is not exactly famous for its medical care-- one would think that the governor would be flown to the best possible hospital in the NYC area.

3. Cooper is an excellent hospital.
Plus, you will always want the most experienced trauma surgeons available, and they see so much of it in Camden.

4. Cold day in hell the governor of New Jersey goes to a New York hospital
Anyways, we have world class medical facilities here, no need to hop across the border.

7. It's one of the three major trauma centers in our state.

and when this kind of thing happens, you want the fastest, most focused care. Cooper University Hospital in Camden was the closest and best place to go.

8. What give a Governor the right to speed?
The descriptions by the driver of the red pickup fill in the picture of what happened.

He saw the flashing lights of Corzine's "motorcade", pulled onto the shoulder and then back into the right lane to avoid a milepost.

The white pickup behind him, who had probably not seen the flashing lights of Corzine's Suburban and had probably not started to slow or pull right, then pulled into the left lane to avoid the red pickup.

Corzine's Suburban and the white pickup collided. It doesn't say, but my bet is that the Suburban rear-ended the white pickup.

Arrogant politician, who speeds on the Parkway while not wearing a seatbelt, winds up in the hospital.

Just goes to show that not all the animals are equal. Some are stupider than the others.

9. I believe your "arrogant politician" was in the PASSENGER seat,
so his driver was the one speeding.

No seat belt - now THAT'S just plain stupid.

10. He should have STOPPED on the shoulder (either before or after the milepost)
checked his blind spot, and made sure the lane was clear before pulling back into it. What was HIS hurry?
