McCain to Stake Bid On Need to Win in Iraq

By Michael D. Shear
Washington Post Staff Writer
Saturday, April 7, 2007; Page A01

Sen. John McCain (R-Ariz.) will launch a high-profile effort next week to convince Americans that the Iraq war is winnable, embracing the unpopular conflict with renewed vigor as he attempts to reignite his stalling bid for the presidency.

With the Virginia Military Institute as a backdrop, McCain plans to argue in a speech on Wednesday that victory in Iraq is essential to American security and that President Bush's war machine is finally getting on track after four years, aides and advisers said.

McCain's rosy assessment of safety on Iraq's streets after his recent visit to a Baghdad marketplace was mocked by many, prompting him to tell a television reporter that he "misspoke" and now regrets the comments....

1. OK. It's patently obvious that McCain is not waging a serious bid
for President - so the question now becomes:

Just who is McCain hoping to benefit with his campaign? Who gets the ultimate pay-off for his self sabotaging campaign?

McCain has a motive and it ain't getting elected.

2. He's doing the party's sacrificial candidate role
He makes unsustainable arguments and draws fire from the opposition so as to have us waste resources countering him. This way the real candidate gets to distance himself from the musings put forth by the radical minority and somehow look moderate without spending a dime. It would cost nothing to say you disagree with the Senator from Arizona, and the corporate media wouldn't press the issue. He's the designated pinata or shock absorber.

4. Isn't that called 'hitching your wagon to a falling star'?
The mental gymnastics required to define 'victory' in Iraq are astoundingly complicated and utterly exhausting. Aside from the 'backwash' component in the American electorate, who will suddenly begin engaging in the ninja-grade doublethink required to accept the notion that war in Iraq is 'winnable?'

5. It's disgusting the amount of money that will be wasted here.
Those millions could feed a lot of people or build a few state of the art schools in places in dire need. If there was ever a loser issue to stake your campaign on it's continuing the Iraq Occupation.

Maybe he'll define victory, and I hope it includes more than buying cheap tapestries.

10. I'm starting to wonder if maybe this bastard just doesn't WANT to be president
So he is taking suicidal positions.

Not what I have thought to this point, but I do wonder why in the hell his campaign isn't seeing defections of major talent because of his inability to remove his foot from his mouth or his head from his ass. There are about 200 Repukes running, so it would seem that you would start to see the good talent start to leave the sinking ships.
