Edwards reports raising more than $14 million in early 2007
Source: Associated Press

Democratic presidential candidate John Edwards raised "in excess of $14 million" during the first quarter of this year - a sum that would have set a record if not for rival Hillary Rodham Clinton, who gathered almost twice as much.

Edwards raised almost $3.3 million over the Internet, officials with his campaign said Sunday. The total was boosted by a strong fundraising surge in the final week, stoked by Edwards' announcement that his wife, Elizabeth, is battling an incurable form of cancer.

"We're significantly above our budget for the year," said deputy campaign manager Jonathan Prince. "We're on track to be highly competitive."

Since announcing his candidacy at the end of December, the former North Carolina senator has been touring the nation seeking both votes and donations, courting a base of fellow trial lawyers who helped him raise $7.4 million in the same period of 2003 during his first bid for the White House.

2. I suspect as we get closer to the primaries Obama and Edwards supporters
will consolidate their votes, mostly because of their position on Iraq

Hillary stands out as the only Democratic candidate who believes that our prescence in Iraq will be required for some time now

4. I could really go for an Edwards- Obama ticket.
I put Edwards first only because he is older and being VP for 8 years should give Obama enough experience to satisfy anyone!

5. I like a Edwards/Webb ticket myself.
Obama, IMHO, needs to come down to earth.

7. The problem with Obama is he thinks problems out throughly
If that means he isn't "down to earth", then please give some more people that aren't down to earth

3. Read the info on Hillary very carefully.
It sounds to me as if some of the money she is reporting is promised to her in the event that she wins the nomination. My feeling is, if you don't have it in your account today, you shouldn't be reporting it. How many of the donations that Hillary is reporting today to show the level of her support will end up going to whomever the nominee is?

9. Unless Gore gets in, I'm not strongly committed between Edwards or Obama
I just know that I won't vote for Hillary (or "the rest" with the possible exception of Richardson.)

13. that Gore wildcard. I go with who is in the race today. Gore will suck
all the attention to himself if he does run. I'm not sure he will, so I going with Edwards.

15. It Disturbs Me
That he got a surge in donations following the announcement of Elizabeth's illness. OF course, I'm hypocritical. I donated earlier this month and then made a second donation a few days ago.

For me, I am concerned there are still people out there who would like John Edwards's message, but shy away from supporting him because they doubt he will stay in the race.

I hate to think of the money as sympathy donations. I'm sure that is how "some people" (to borrow Couric's phrase) would see it. I prefer to look it as people see how the Edwardses handle adversity - and like what they see.

Maybe it's stating the obvious - It's a horrible circumstance to show your character.
