Soldiers' corpses dragged through Mogadishu
Source: USA Today

"MOGADISHU, Somalia (AP) — Masked gunmen dragged slain soldiers through the streets of Somalia's capital Wednesday, then set the bodies on fire as jeering crowds threw rocks and kicked the dead after a fierce battle in a neighborhood loyal to Islamic insurgents.
At least 16 people were reported killed and dozens were wounded in the hours-long firefight, which was some of the heaviest fighting in Mogadishu since a radical Muslim militia was driven from the city in December after six months in power.

An Associated Press photographer saw six corpses — all soldiers for the U.N.-backed interim government or their Ethiopian allies — burned and mutilated while masked men shouted "God is great!" Women in head scarves and flowing dresses pounded one charred body with rocks.

A similar scene in Mogadishu grabbed the world's attention in 1993 when militiamen shot down a U.S. Black Hawk helicopter during an attempt to capture a warlord and dragged around dead American soldiers. The Clinton administration pulled out U.S. troops, and U.N. peacekeepers soon followed suit, leaving Somalia to years of anarchy."

9. I was in Somalia - so let's get some facts straight. Bush sent a
mission to stop the fighting, open the lines of communication and get people fed. He left office a month and a half after we went in.

Things went to shit when, long after Bush left office, the mission was escalated to nation-building.

"Hello, I'm from the UN and I'm here to pick up your guns and arrest your warlords..." didnn't go over any better in Somalia than it would in Alabama.

13. Those facts seem a little crooked yet
Bush sent a mission to stop the fighting, open the lines of communication and get people fed.

Bush sent a mission to protect the interests of Conoco, Amoco, Chevron, and Phillips oil who all had deals with Mohamed Siad Barre to explore and exploit Somalia oil fields. Clinton was just going along with it. Let's be realistic, GHWB did not care about altruistically providing humanitarian aid to poor Africans.

3. God I hate war...especially a religiously sponsored war....
Seems to me, they should take the leaders, regardless of the religious preference, who demand war and retribution, and put THEM out there to fight each other!

Always easy to call for heads when yours isn't the one that will be severed...:grr:
