Some (NBA) Sonics owners back group against gay marriage
http://seattlepi.nwsource.com/local/305224_owners26ww.html

By CHRIS McGANN
P-I REPORTER

OLYMPIA-- The millionaires who've turned to this state's left-leaning Legislature to authorize a $300 million tax subsidy for a new basketball arena have been playing right-wing politics.

Two members of the new Seattle Sonics ownership group are heavyweight financiers of a national political machine dedicated to banning gay marriage.

Together, co-owners Tom Ward and Aubrey McClendon donated more than $1.1 million to Americans United to Preserve Marriage, a conservative Christian group that opposes gay marriage.

The group is lead by Gary Bauer, an outspoken leader of conservative groups including the Family Research Council and Focus on the Family.

3. That they are.
Personally, I'm just shocked they haven't moved the team there already.

2. 1.1 mil to the poor could have been fantastic
But they are doing it to hate gays? They call themselves Christians? Hasn't America had enough of the right wing radical hatred agenda?

4. Gary Bauer, classic right wing lunatic

You should see this guy, his name should be Dweebus Maximus...

Here's another example of the religious clowns who knows what's best for everyone, as they are attempting to close an adult store in NC....From AVN (Adult Video News)

NEW BERN, N.C. - Retailer Greg Sakas is calling out to the adult industry for help in his fight against police and religious groups who are attempting to shut down his business. This week, local authorities intend to charge Sakas with a third-class misdemeanor under a state law that prohibits the sale of adult DVDs and novelties under the same roof.

In late January, New Bern police raided Sakas' Pure Bliss outlet, seizing the store's inventory and records. According to Sakas, the action against him is the first salvo in a Christian Coalition campaign designed to rid North Carolina of pornography.

"I'm the first person in North Carolina to ever be charged on this," Sakas told AVN. "The Christian Coalition is looking at this as the springboard to a major fight in which they can shut down all the adult stores in North Carolina, and beyond. Everybody in the industry needs to fight this."

Sakas told AVN that the Christian Coalition has been looking to close Pure Bliss for several months. "They came in and actually looked at the store back in December," he said. "After that, I had to call them, and what they said was that they wanted me to close down. They want to clean up America and they think a lot of problems with this country stem from porn – they want to take their stand because God needs to be back present in everyone's lives. These people are fanatical."

When the Coalition asked Sakas to attend their Jan. 15 meeting in New Bern, the store owner declined. Two days later, the group filed a complaint with the New Bern police, who applied for a search warrant on Jan. 29.

"The police chief went ahead with the raid without even discussing it with the D.A.," Sakas recounted. "Six vice and narcotics officers came in like they were after a major seizure of narcotics. We've never had one person question what we were doing; we had a license to operate, with the city fully knowing we had adult material. They confiscated the fax machine, the computer, our vendor list, invoices, the DVR and all of our paperwork from the past year; we had to estimate our sales tax at the end of the month. They took all the movies out of the store, and all of the printed matter except for the tattoo magazines. No one signed off on this, and they had no list or description of anything they took - it felt like we were in Nazi Germany."

14. You did notice that a lot of Democrats were elected in the south this past election?
Edited on Tue Feb-27-07 12:23 PM by brentspeak
Besides that, what exactly are "dems and freethinkers in the South" supposed to do about a group of investors and religious right activists who want to close down adult video stores? How would this fall under the category of something that the Democratic party should be involved in, anyway?

8. This sort of behavior is part of why I am wary of those wearing a cross.
The other reason is because they might beat or kill me.

19. I still wear a cross, though I'm not religious, and post in the Atheist/Agnostic forum.
But I got it in Soviet Georgia and it means something to me. However, I suspected that because of it the hostess of my first DU meet-up thought I was some kind of religious fanatic, though we were kindred spirits, politically. :-)

And I'm also a pacifist and support gun control, which shows that you never know about people.;) Except for the RW.:scared:

9. so they want Washington state taxpayers to underwrite their
bball arena in order to pump up their personal profits. Those taxpayers include GLBT folks - who are expected to foot the bill and have some of those $$ flow out of some of the owners pockets and into radical organizations aimed at discriminating and fomenting hate against those same taxpayers? Time for constituents to write tons of letters to the state legislators to stop this subsidy from going through.

why is it that being rich makes people think they get to decide what others do in their homes or their doctors' offices?

18. I have a friend who is very new to all this, asked me a lot of questions
Edited on Tue Feb-27-07 01:17 PM by Rhiannon12866
around the 2004 elections. He kept asking me if we were liberals or conservatives, because he couldn't remember, LOL, but he's one of us. I told him that one way that he can tell the difference is that the conservatives are the ones who want to tell everyone else what to do.:grr:

22. Thanks! That's sure how it appears to me, so the way I explained it to my non-political friend.
Edited on Tue Feb-27-07 05:56 PM by Rhiannon12866
I explained the issues, like gay marriage, smoking and abortion. I told him that I'd be offended if someone told me that I had to have an abortion, marry a person of the same sex, or smoke, but we think that people should be free to make their own personal decisions. Thanks.:-)

23. We have a big tent, my friend, more than anyone else,
so there are bound to be a diversity of opinions. But I think that the most important thing is that we can be tolerant of those who have different opinions than the rest of us, and as I just said, don't try to tell the rest of us what to do in the world. I agree that there are several people who try that, but they don't usually last very long here. They're "not on our side," as the rules say. :-)

I was speaking as a new mod, just now, not that I don't believe in the ideal.;)

And, yeah, all of us here keep our opinions to ourselves.

that make me happy.

Regardless of these bigots' views on human rights, taxpayers SHOULD NOT be paying for these rich owners' playgrounds.

Fuck that shit.

26. I completely agree. Either it's a good investment, in which case
go for it, or its not, in which case, the gov't should have nothing to do with it.

Speculate on your own dime, fellas.

If they've got 1.1 million to spend on Gary Bauer, they ought to be able to scrape enough together to build their stadium.
