WASHINGTON - GOP Rep. John Doolittle on Friday defended a defense contractor just indicted in a federal corruption investigation, saying the charges of fraud, conspiracy and money laundering do not reflect the Brent Wilkes he knows.

Wilkes has strongly protested his innocence, and "that's the Brent Wilkes I know," said Doolittle, who's socialized with Wilkes at fundraisers and accepted some $45,000 in campaign cash from him and his associates.

Doolittle also has acknowledged promoting federal funding for a Wilkes venture called PerfectWave, a technology to limit background noise in electronic communications.

Wilkes and former CIA executive director Kyle "Dusty" Foggo were charged by a San Diego grand jury this week in the investigation that sent former congressman Randy "Duke" Cunningham to prison in 2006. Wilkes is accused of giving Cunningham lavish bribes in exchange for government business and of engaging in fraud with Foggo, who allegedly used his influence to win contracts for Wilkes.

Doolittle, R-Rocklin, who also was friendly with jailed GOP lobbyist Jack Abramoff, said he didn't know details of the case beyond what's been made public.

1. Good, i think Doolittle should associate his name with the indicted
and convicted felons as often as possible.

2. This helps Charlie Brown who is trying to unseat Doolittle.
I hope we can get rid of Doolittle soon.
