Pro-Saddam rallies held in Iraq
Pro-Saddam rallies held in Iraq
Last Updated Mon, 15 Dec 2003 15:38:29

BAGHDAD - Hundreds of pro-Saddam demonstrators hit the streets of Iraq Monday to show support for their former leader.

Police say dozens of Saddam loyalists, armed with automatic weapons and rocket-propelled grenades, attacked two police stations in northern Baghdad. Officers opened fire to disperse the crowd.

Demonstrations were also held in Fallujah and Tikrit. Crowds of people carried pictures of Saddam and chanted pro-Saddam slogans.

Protesters also clashed with U.S. troops as about 300 students marched through the streets of Saddam's hometown of Tikrit.

2. I hope Saddam Hussein fades into obscurity.
I would think few Iraqis actually see Hussein as a real fighter for Iraqi independence. He was a flunkey for the west throughout his rule. His war against Iran was cheered in Washington, Paris and London. Those youth in Iraq had best find a better "ideology" to support if they want to safeguard their sovereignty.

3. I agree
But he might not go away if as long as Bush's crusade for oil is ongoing. Let Exxon send their own troops.

4. Was thinking a bit ago, if they let him fade into obscurity and hold
him in Iraq log enough, supposedly for the INC trial of the century, is it possible he could escape with some help?

Just a thought...

6. He may escape by dying from cancer
Would like to see an open trail at the Hague and all the facts brought out about how the U.S. took this murdereous thug and proped him up to help the U.S. effort with Iran. Who gave all those WMD to Saddam?

18. No, actually pro-Saddam
television and radio interviews showed them chanting slogans in praise of "President Saddam" and whatnot. I'm not sure what you'd call that other than pro-Saddam.

9. I'd be interested to know the popular sentiment of the Iraqi people.
We all assume that everyone is delerious with happiness, but is this the truth? I'd love to find an objective read of the popular sentiment. And I think, whatever it is today, may well change significantly depending on how we handle the occupation over the months ahead.

11. Just doing their thing
Doesn't this administration go out of its way to discredit and humiliate all of its 'enemies', be they here or there or anywhere? Did somebody say Joseph Wilson?

I better be careful what I post lest I be branded a Saddam sympathizer. Shaking in my Bruno Magli’s I am. B-)

12. Me too
A national unbiased survey would be interesting and maybe informative.

The sight of pro-Saddam rallies doesn't surprise me any more or less than the pro-Hitler rallies that happen from time to time. Germany has simply outlawed them. Maybe Iraq will end up doing something similar.

13. I'll wager that for the majority
They may have hated Sadaam but I'll guarantee they felt better off than they do now, with at least 10,000 Iraqis killed, Lord knows how many maimed, no jobs, buildings and cities in ruin and marshall law.

Something about being ruled by shrub jest don't agree with the common folk.

16. When will Bush show remorse for
being responsible for the killings of thousands of Iraqis and the destruction of Iraq's infrastructure, let alone the lies that led to the destructive and murderous invasion of Iraq. This administration's contempt for the UN, internatinal law and constitutional law show that this administration is power hungry and mimics the actions of a blooming dictatorhip. Bush has a lot of gall for continually pointing out Saddam's record for Iraqi deaths when he has the blood of thousands on his own hands. His ego and thirst for power just didn't allow him to go along with the body of nations(UN) who were in the process of containing Saddam's aspirations. Good things take time, especially that well known word called democracy. Think of the time it took for women to win civil rights in this country, the right to vote and the blacks to win civil rights. Democracy is still an ongoing process.

14. I bet the majority is happy
the dictator is gone, and all they want now is for the foreign troops to leave. The foreigners who should stay behind are those who have to rebuild what they have destroyed.

17. doesn't matter what the majority wants in Iraq or here for that matter
majority? what?
Didn't Gore get the majority of votes in the last election?
Didn't the majority of U.S. citizen oppose the invasion and occupation?(just looking at the protest turn outs )

Won't the majority vote Chimp's hairy ass out next election?
Won't the majority be pissed when Deibold sets him up for a win?
will it matter when the majority of the world hates the U.S...?

20. That would be my inclination, too.
But I don't know that as a fact. I suspect that there were quite a few who admired him. Hey, 40% here think George Bush is a great president.

Time will tell I guess....if things don't improve substantially, many might reconsider their "good fortune" of liberation.

21. No elections/no Majority....
The vast majority of people will always vote for security and prosperity. Hang the politics.

It doesn't matter unless there elections that matter. In Iraq the votes that count will come from the guys with guns and improvised explosive devices.
