BAGHDAD, Iraq - Two nearly simultaneous bombs struck a predominantly Shiite commercial area in central Baghdad, killing at least 52 people and wounding dozens, police said.

The first blast occurred shortly after noon when a bomb left in a bag placed among the stalls of vendors peddling DVDs and secondhand clothes exploded in the Bab al-Sharqi area between Tayaran and Tahrir squares.

BAGHDAD, Jan 22 (Reuters) - Two car bombs exploded simultaneously in central Baghdad on Monday, killing at least 10 people and wounding 20, Iraqi police said.

An Interior Ministry source said as many as 40 had been killed, but that could not be immediately confirmed.

Elsewhere in the capital, U.S.-backed Iraqi forces sealed off a predominantly Sunni neighbourhood, but the Defence Ministry said it was not the start of a promised new offensive.

U.S. President George Bush is sending more than 21,000 fresh troops to Iraq to help the Shi'ite-led Iraqi government stop Shi'ite death squads and Sunni insurgents blamed for spiralling sectarian violence that threatens all-out civil war.

Most of the reinforcements, 17,000, are to be deployed in Baghdad, where U.S. generals say previous offensives failed because there were too few boots on the ground to hold neighbourhoods that had been cleared in house-to-house sweeps -- and because the government failed to go after Shi'ite militias.

16. Correct no civil war. This is Genocide.
Hitlers Genocidal campaign against the Jews and other Germans also was not a civil war.

BAGHDAD (Reuters) - Two simultaneous car bombs blasted a busy market in central Baghdad on Monday, killing at least 75 people in fresh violence that came as Iraqis awaited the start of a planned U.S.-backed offensive in the capital.

After a relative lull in violence in the capital at the weekend, the car bombs exploded barely a second apart in a market for second-hand goods in the crowded Bab al-Sharji area, just after midday (0900 GMT).

Police put the death toll at 75, with 170 wounded.

12. Twin car bombs kill 88 in Baghdad market = 14 killed in Baquba
BAGHDAD, Jan 22 (Reuters) - Two car bombs ripped through a busy market in Baghdad on Monday, killing 88 people in fresh violence of the kind that U.S. and Iraqi forces plan to target in a new offensive in the lawless capital.

Shi'ite Prime Minister Nuri al-Maliki blamed the car bombs on followers of Saddam Hussein, whose botched execution last month angered many among his fellow minority Sunni Arabs.

The midday blasts, less than a second apart, also maimed scores at a second-hand goods market in Bab al-Sharji, a busy commercial area that is home to both Sunni Arab and Shi'ite shopowners and traders in central Baghdad.

Hours later, at least 14 people were killed and 40 wounded when a bomb exploded in a town near Baquba, northeast of Baghdad, police sources said.

14. AP: Bombs kill at least 100 people in Iraq
Bombs kill at least 100 people in Iraq

BAGHDAD, Iraq - Bombings and a mortar attack struck Shiite targets in Baghdad and
north of the capital on Monday, killing as many as 100 people and wounding scores
in a further sign of what appeared to be a renewed campaign of Sunni insurgent
violence.

The U.S. military also reported the deaths of two Marines, raising the two-day death
toll to 27 in a particularly bloody weekend for American forces in
Iraq.

Monday's first blast, a parked car bomb, tore through stalls of vendors peddling DVDs
and secondhand clothes shortly after noon in the Bab al-Sharqi market between Tayaran
and Tahrir squares — one of the busiest parts of Baghdad. Seconds later, a suicide car
bomber drove into the crowd.

Police estimated that each car was loaded with nearly 220 pounds of explosives.

Deputy Health Minister Hakim al-Zamili said at least 78 people were killed and 156
were wounded, making it the deadliest attack in two months. Figures provided by police
and hospital officials showed that as many as 88 people were killed.

15. 100 DEAD! How much of the 288 TONS of HDE do they have left?
In the invasion Bush & Rumsfeld neglected to secure 288 TON of High Density Explosives. But the potential insurgents didn't get a drop of oil. The oil ministry offices were well guarded by special forces advance teams. So this latest explosion brings down the HDE to how much? One thing is for sure. Bush & Cheney built this insurgency to last. The worst part is the UN informed them of the location of the HDE. They have them a map. They could have went right to it. But they didn't.

17. I must be crazily naive...
... but if I were Maliki, I'd put in a total ban on cars in Baghdad. For at least a month.

Would it be more inconvenient for people to walk a couple of miles to get where they're going --- or to risk death and dismemberment from daily car bombs?
