Democrats give Perry an earful in D.C. meeting

Express-News Washington Bureau

WASHINGTON — Texas Democrats scolded Gov. Rick Perry on Friday over the mid-decade redistricting plan that eliminated senior lawmakers and drove a partisan wedge into the state's congressional delegation.

Democrats used a private Capitol Hill meeting to vent their lingering frustration with Perry, who called three special sessions in 2003 to win approval of a GOP-friendly redistricting plan that has stripped the state of clout in a Democrat-controlled Congress.

“There are still a lot of hard feelings,” said Rep. Ciro Rodriguez, D-San Antonio, who attended the 8 a.m. meeting with Perry.

Rep. Nick Lampson, D-Houston, told Perry that redistricting tore the entire congressional delegation apart.
(snip)

Rep. Sylvestre Reyes, D-El Paso, said Democrats called Perry to the meeting to “repair the severe damage wrought in recent years by three unprecedented special sessions.”

1. Perry's such a partisan hack
Edited on Sat Jan-20-07 03:10 PM by last_texas_dem
The best response he has to the Dems pointing out that his aiding and abetting that crook Delay's re-redistricting has ended up weakening Texas's clout on the federal level is, "The election period is over." That's some mighty deep thinking you've been doing there, Gov. Goodhair. And his "reassurance" that there will be no more re-redistricting while he's Governor... well, it's already been taken care of for this decade, which will be the rest of Perry's term. So when exactly would he have considered doing it again while still in office, anyway? (That is, unless he decides to go for another <shudder> term...) Why in the hell we have to deal with this 39-percenter for four more years as Governor anyway is the question. It makes me wish we had the old Louisiana primary system...

2. Wasn't there something with him & the Teamsters Nov 06?
I remember the Teamsters decided they "had" to strike on Nov 1,2 etc.. which meant that buses would not be running on election day unless people crossed the picket lines. It seemed to me there was something about Perry being in thick with the Texas Teamsters making them less a union representing the workers and more a good ol boys show pony.

5. Any union scheduling a shutdown during Election Day is not a legitimate union

3. I'm very glad to hear this--that Texas Dems are yelling about it, and that
asshole Perry has to listen. I remember the Dem rebels who fled the state and hid out across the border to prevent a quorum on that tyrannical redistricting. That was so wonderful! --one of the earliest signs that people were starting to fight back. I think I discovered the Lonestar Iconoclast--that great little kickass newspaper in Crawford, TX--around that time. And one thing I learned, NEVER accept a "red state" designation, with goings on like that redistricting, and non-transparent elections. We simply don't know how much disenfranchisement has occurred, and how many great progressive people there might be in a given place.

4. They're all just Pigs At The Trough
I'm really getting sick of politics

it was supposed to be a way to make things better for people

but it's just electing someone to a seat at the trough

It sucks so bad
