Second Republican opposes Bush Iraq plan
Jan 18, 2007

WASHINGTON - A second Republican signed onto a Senate resolution on Wednesday opposing President Bush's 21,500-troop buildup in Iraq, setting a marker for a major clash between the White House and Congress over the unpopular war.

Sen. Olympia Snowe (news, bio, voting record), a moderate from Maine, said she would support a nonbinding resolution that would put the Senate on record as saying the U.S. commitment in Iraq can be sustained only with support from the American public and Congress.

Snowe's decision to join the effort came as the White House and GOP leaders struggled to keep Republicans from endorsing the resolution, and raised questions about how many more defections there might be.

"Now is time for the Congress to make its voice heard on a policy that has such significant implications for the nation, the Middle East and the world," Snowe said in a written statement.

Okay, it was just the headline.

Probably put there to appease dumbdumb and make him think his party agrees.

12. Well, I was hoping it would be Gordon Smith of Oregon.
He made a strong statement against bush's handling of the war and created a brief firestorm, but I guess words are cheap, eh, Senator Smith? :(

15. Gordo is quite concerned
about the color of our state now, especially since he's up for re-election in '08.

It wouldn't surprise me if he joined Snowe soon.

An Oregon state Democratic House and Senate for the 1st time in sixteen years has made him a tad screerd, I do believe.

17. I'm going to have to write him. There's a momentum building.
I'll send a copy of the letter to Sen. Wyden, also, because those two work very closely together on a lot of issues.

19. I wonder if the administration will call them traitors, too?
It will be interesting to see if this takes any of the edge off the White House rhetoric or if they'll figure "what the hell" and just start lashing out at everyone who voices public disagreement?

her to defect, all the way, and come over to our side.

Why not? After all, she's a moderate on most things. She really doesn't have a place in the republi-CON party as it now stands. She's an oddball, odd woman out. As such, she's now shackled to the minority, with no say and no clout. That could change, easily, if she switched parties. She's not a good fit with those assholes. Really doesn't belong with 'em anymore.

You are known by the company you keep, Ms. Snowe. What do you want that proximity to say about you? What is it currently saying about you?

You ought to switch, girlfriend. Come over to The Side of the Light. That's where you belong, anyway, dontcha think? After all, look what happened to Lincoln Chafee. We had our arms open to him, too, and he could have come over, and if he had, he'd still have a job. Don't let that happen to you, Olympia...

I think I'll be calling her office about that in the morning... Besides, I really do have a cousin who lives in Maine. With family there, I claim at least the partial privilege of having some say-so. And I've used that before when I've called her office (and that of Susan Collins, too). I'd suggest this as a lobbying tactic anyway, guys. If they think you somehow DO have a vested interest or legitimate claim on their representation, EVEN IF YOU YOURSELF DON'T ACTUALLY LIVE IN THAT STATE, I say USE IT. ANY ADVANTAGE will do.

BTW - may I humbly offer another reason to urge her, and everybody who has even half a brain, to defect?

23. Now We're About Even
Don't forget that there will be at least a couple of Democratic defections as well, and with Senator Johnson still incapacitated, he can't participate in the vote, as far as I understand it. You already know how Lieberman is going to vote, and another 1 or 2 might join him.

Unfortunately I think if this McConnell character wants to filibuster, it will come down to how many repubs go along with him, and also if any Democratic defectors agree to delay the vote, and allow the filibuster.
